Great work! Looking forward to seeing the finished project. Just wanted to let you know that the shopvac Amazon has is overpriced. Got mine from Menards last year for $70. But now can only find the following as a better deal comparatively: www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/shop-vac-3941000?:pla-566620344452_dev-m_ext-_prd-3941000&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2PP1BRCiARIsAEqv-pR05UZBCZnmtVJ230jwC2D92FCWwdSjIuFFvN5VOs4zNrupMKL4mWQaAqyfEALw_wcB
I gotta say, also, you are killin it with this video. Adding your process/production shots during the endorsement is brilliant. Usually I skip them but not this time. I hope the sponsor recognizes this! Amazing build and an amazing video.
It’s really nice to see you doing what you do well again, (Building & educating). I can imagine it hasn’t been easy without the “home” feeling and ability just yet.
Travis, I really enjoy all of your videos. You are very articulate when presenting the information and your videography is top-notch. Thanks for sharing your great content. Felix
You've given me an idea: I made a mobile work bench out of an old tool box being thrown out at an auto repair shop. It was a little bent and missing a few drawers. I mostly have clutter in it now, but putting a dust collection setup in it would probably be better.
Great project Travis. The build is coming along very nicely. I have to replace my big workbench as mine has finally met its match with all the weathering since getting kicked out of the garage for other "needed" tools. Workbench to come after building a storage shed to keep it better protected. I'm looking forward to the next segment of the build. Stay safe.
GREAT to see you back.. Can't wait for you to get your permanent shop. Would love to pick your brain sometime about your channel. Again.. Great to see you back in the shop!!!
Glad to see you up and posting again! I'm a typical handyman type carpenter and appreciate your down to earth solutions. The casters just in MDF I'm interested in seeing the durability (I wouldn't do that). For that size cart I think probably OK. Keep the vids coming!
I have been considering building some sort of dust collection cart and to have one that acts as a smaller assembly table is a super idea. Even to have it as a sanding area that might sit next to an assembly area that might be in use. Thanks for the idea.
I'm working on plans to turn my contractor saw into a rolling saw table, not dissimilar to this, with some dust collection and an external port to hook up to other tools in my shop as I need. Looking ofrward to part 2!
I’m setting up a garage woodshshared with the parked cars and started using a Harbor Freight shop vac and cyclone separator with my miter saw, small Skill 8-/12 table saw, router and sander but quickly found them lacking and invested in a JET 4” 650CFM Jet system with 4” Oneida cyclone with modular Rocker connectors. I also invested in the ASC system but with the folding stand sold by Kreg which makes it easy to stow vertically in very little space with the track and other guides in place when not in use rolling easily around the garage and up and over the sill of the sliding back door to an outdoor patio in the back under the deck which is difficult on a cart with casters- I can’t work in the front driveway where I live. Because the need for big wheels to move things out back to work and stow vertically in the garage I also opted for folding job site stands with large wheels instead of DIY carts for the miter and table saws. I do plan to make DIY cart for the planer, and flip cart for router table / sander with the band saw on casters and the bench top drill press on cart with locking casters. By far the best value for me is the more robust dust collection - my lungs are priceless - and the folding stand ACS which is a huge space saver when not in use. I also use a work table with fold out wings to save space.
Lookin good in the new shop, and looking forward to seeing the next episode, and the gradual transformation of the shop in general!!!! Cheers from Aus!!!!
Looks like it's coming along nicely. I've got a bench but virtually zero for dust collection - my shop vac even gave out on me. I'll be watching to see how this bench turns out.
Very cool, I have a dust collection cart but I need to make better use of my small space. Was thinking about mounting it on the wall, but a workbench is a good idea too.
Ha! Gremlins. Anyway... This is great. I really really really want the Festool track saw. But the Kreg ACS has definitely caught my eye. Dust collection is one of the big draws.
Awww man now I’m conflicted about this or the ultimate bench plans! I think this would suit my needs more because of the small scale of it but I really like the former bench because of all the extra storage AND dust collection. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. 👍🏽
Yeah I know what you mean, I think the original bench is an absolute beast but I know many can't fit something that size in their shop. This design is a great replacement for it
@@ShopNation Well I do have a 2 car garage with 400 sq ft of space that I have dedicated to building my shop in and decided that parking a car in there isn't that big of a deal. So I would welcome your thoughts and recommendation. I loved the beastly bench but like the idea of the small one as well but I will admit, I'm leaning towards the beast mode lol. thanks for the reply and hope to hear any suggestions you have. As always, keep up the great videos!
@shopnation if you’re talking about the compression helping- that’s only for the tear out due to moment. I’d think the fact that the whole bottom is basically in tension is going to be the problem more than anything. Sure, the framing is there to help spread the force across the sheet, but aside that, the framing is basically useless because 100% of the weight is on the MDF. Back to the drawing board buddy.
Yeah, that surprised me as well I would probably have gone with 3/4" ply on the bottom sticking to the current plan, or just extending the frame to the corners and attaching the casters there. I guess it wouldn't be a huge issue if this was for light weight work, but as soon as you put it under real load, I can't see them lasting long there :\
Seeing this, and due to the ever rising cost of plywood, I'm toying with the idea of using MDF for the dust collection cabinet on the Ultimate Workbench. Just wondering if that would hold up well since it isn't part of the main structure.
Fun fact people!!! The Adaptive cutting system master kit is $899 BUT, at least where I live on the east coast, if you bought everything individually, it’s still the SAME PRICE so you’re not obligated to get might not need like the legs which themselves are $150... I bought everything besides the legs and I’m planning on building this workbench to sit under my kreg table
Your phone does listen to your conversations. Plenty of evidence that it does, and I have tested it on my own. It’s better now that I have turned off the mic for things like Facebook messenger. Also, great video, thank you!
I’m really glad to see you making this project. I’ve been following your channel for a while and bought a Makita track saw so I could get cleaner cuts while making some of your shop cabinets. The track saw is definitely a game changer, but I find myself checking and rechecking that the track is square to the reference face. Having the Kreg table top would prevent a lot, if not all of that. I’ve read that Kreg says the table top isn’t designed to work with any other track saw, but others are saying it can be done. Looking forward to seeing how your setup turns out.
Mate!!! 83.7K subs! Yewwwww! So good to see your channel getting the traction you've worked so hard for! Also....that hoodie you have on looks awesome! Where'd you get it? Is that your companies wear?
Thanks a lot! Yeah it's great seeing the channel grow. I got the hoodie from my new company, I love the fit of it. If I can find where they got it I'd like to get some Shop Nation logos on them
Great vid...amazing you have the energy & gumption to keep going, going, going...glad you have a new sponsor...may you have many more...you certainly earn it...most enjoyable, well paced and informative channel that I’ve seen/followed...something about your style that works totally...I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is-doubtless it’s a combo of many things-but recognize it when I see it...sorry to ramble, but it’s hard to sum up in just a few words...anyway, goodonya!...
Love the channel. I’m about to build a series of work benches using ideas from several of your projects combined with afew other youtuber’s bench projects. I was going to use a HD five gallon bucket with a dust stopper for dust collection but I’m thinking at a minimum I should set my base structure up to later add the larger dust separators you use on your projects to upgrade at a later date. It would be much easier to just cut out a hole then have to try and jack a finished project up to move supports to create that recessed box. How big was the opening you created for the dust deputy
I love this bench and have been conflicted on track saws. I have now decided to bite the bullet and do this one. Great job, as usual. One thing though, the link to the shop-vac doesn't work. I was going to get the set you have listed but apparently Amazon no longer has that one. Any recommendations on another one? I know it's been like 2 years, but I can't find one like yours. Thanks for all the great content!
That is coming along nicely. I see some influences from Jordan Frank's workbench in this one. How do you find the castor setup with no 2x4 or similar framing to support them?
Raptorator Hey, I actually was doing my research and was trying to decide between those exact same products... due to my small one car garage I went with the ACS because the portability... I really wanted the cordless makita but I also needed a workbench big enough to double as an assembly table so I killed 2 birds with one stone
If you're including the ACS, yes, but you can make one with a standard top for a lot cheaper. Also you can add dust collection later to spread the cost out.
With this video (and a comment you made on a previous video), it feels like this might be the first of three/four pieces that may connect together to replace an old friend that had to be left behind. Possible?
what programs are out there to help you plan a sheet of wood so you get the most out of the sheet like you have there? something you can input sizes and have it automatically lay it out in the perfect configuration so you get the most of it and calculate for the blade width?
Hey Travis, is the bottom frame section in front of the dust collector totally necessary? I’m thinking of leaving the casters on the Oneida and having an opening to roll it out for emptying. I am setting up a new shop and bought your plans - it probably won’t move from its final resting place…
I wish I had waited and built this one. I bought the plans for your big Workbench and built about 1/2 of the total thing. Meaning the frame, table top and drawers. I too have a two car garage and often move the one car out, and move the large bench into the middle space. It's getting heavy honestly. I don't want to abandon the big one, so I'm looking for some power assist wheels? I'm only 46, so not elderly, but still..dang it's getting there. Any suggestions? Send me a direct message if you wish.
Travis, I see you pulled the trigger and bought a track saw. What made you go with the Kreg ACS as opposed to Festool, Makita or DeWalt which are the top rated track saws at this point. I ask because I want to get a track saw and I can't decided what to get.
Love the ACS as a whole. I know Festool has a similar setup but it's more expensive. The Kreg saw + track is also quite a bit less and more approachable for most. I'll do a review on it once I use it some more.
The plan description doesn't mention the size. The ACS is about 55"x30", so I figure that is the footprint. What is the height (With and without the ACS for those who might be considering a different top)?
Recently started following your channel and am looking forward to building this cart however the shop vac used is now been discontinued by the manufacturer and I was wondering if you could recommend another model that will work nicely with the current limitations(9Amps) on the iVac switch
@@ShopNation i have a pretty uneven garage floor I would fear pushing it and it hitting the crack but if you have a smooth floor I see it lasting a while
I am VERY interested in how you like your Kreg tracksaw?? I've been wanting one for a long time, knowing that the Festool was a NO GO due to $$. DeWalt/Makita are my second contenders. Is the Kreg really worth it?? Don't want to spend $$ and then wish I had spent more on one of the other mid"ish" priced sets?? Thnx. Keep on, Keepin' on!!
What cut sheet program do you use? I ask because I am just getting started with wood working and your channel is one of the first channels that I subscribed to.
Oh sweet you got the Kreg track saw! That’s the one I suggested on your post. How do you like it? Also looking forward to seeing you build out a garage shop. I already like this idea but I’d probably have to modify the dimensions a bit so I can still fit my car in the garage. Looking forward to the rest.
Love the channel, been a long time viewer and follower...I understand that MDF is really messy, and it is no good when its wet, so why it? Is it because there are no knots?
I tried MDF this time mainly for the surface finish once I paint it at the end. It is also more dense so it should muffle the dust collection noise a bit better too. We will see...
Ultimate cabinets are in storage but I had to sell the workbench :( It did go to a subscriber so happy about that at least. Likely going to make another one.
Lol I like that you're standing in front of your sweet Kreg sign when you say "I'm not endorsed by Kreg or paid to say this." Not that I think you're B.S.ing us or did on purpose whatsoever. I just think it's funny.
Shop Nation awesome, look forward to it. As the only right handed model (I could be wrong) and exclusive to the USA (110 amp), I’m weighing up importing it or continue to save for the Festool. I have a few cheap options but reviews suggest it is worth the wait.
I like the Kreg so far, but have no experience with other brands. No doubt the Festool is a great saw, but hard to argue with the Kreg price. My view is that if you're a pro and use your track saw for your living...go with Festool. I'm going to do a video in the future weighing the top track saws I think
MDF should also muffle the dust collector sound better too. I'm expanding my skillset and trying an MDF build, hopefully it works, but I'll learn if it doesn't!
Matched my logo colors better. Kidding, honestly I still like the Kobalt tools, I just like the Rigid tool lineup a little better and the lifetime warranty is hard to beat.
You need to find some kind of dust mask. That fiber board is especially bad for your lungs. Why did you pick MDF instead of plywood. It is just not strong.
