Holy fucking goddamn shit. This album. THIS. ALBUM. Mike, dude. Mike. What the fuck. How the hell... ? ??? I'm dumbstruck. This album is legit not only my #1 of 2022, but up there with all my favourite prog-rock epics of all time, including all the heavy hitters from Yes and Genesis and Dream Theater. I can't stop listening to it. I've started quoting lyrics at work. Melodies from it live rent-free in my mind. This is an absolute masterpiece and I can't even articulate just how much I absolutely love this.

I just discovered Toehider a couple weeks ago and have totally fallen in love with the whole discography. Just an incredible talent.

A masterpiece indeed. Toehider/Mike Mills has been my favorite songwritter/composer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist etc. For some time now. The man is amazing. Really wish he got the recognition he deserves and I'm happy you reviewed this to shine more light on it! If you haven't listened to some of his earlier works like What Kind of Creature am I? Or "Good" I would highly highly recommend them as well! He also has some great feature work outside of aryeon most notably in my opinion the album The Room by the Lebanese prog outfit Ostura. That was quite possibly my AotY for 2018. Great review! Cheers!

Absolutely agreed, this is a complete masterstroke of progressive metal, and will easily be featuring high in my top 10 list at the end of the year

Hey Notes, thanks for all the great recommendations this year! This album has been on my list for a while and this endorsement got it a fastpass to the front of the line. Really enjoying it! I just wanted to ask, have you returned to Flaming Row at all since you listened to Elinoire? This Toehider album reminds me a lot of them, and they got so much better on Mirage and The Pure Shine than they were on their debut. Melanie Mau and Martin Schnella (the main duo behind Flaming Row) put out an album this year as well which I quite enjoyed.

Have you ever heard the Angra (with Andre Matos) cover of "Wuthering Heights"? I love it and think it's better than the original. That being said, I just checked out the Toehider version and I do like it, although he almost sounds like he's trying to do like an 80's Metal vocal version of it. That being said, you have me curious to check this record out. I only vaguely know Toehider from when That Drummer Guy interviewed him a few years back. And while I know he was on the Ayreon album, I'll confess to not being into Ayreon (too cheesy for me..I lean more towards the Neverending White Lights approach to having a bunch of singers together in a concept. Which if you don't know NWL, Daniel Victor and many of the people who are on the records are proudly Canadian actually).

I think I might be the outlier on this one, but I have not been able to get into this album. I got recommended it a couple times on the discord server and I listened to it three times and it left me very confused. A lot of the ideas that I found on the record were very interesting but I thought that they were lacking full development, and some of the production choices were very lackluster to me, especially with the mixing of the bass and the non-heaviness/tone of the guitars at certain points when I think the music really needed it. This is not to say that I think the album is bad by any means. I give it a 7/10 still, but I wouldn’t go any higher than that.

listening now..and I can see why. I think it has great moments, but I'm not sure if the way it was composed and sections pieced together flow all that well. ..also I'm not all that much for Doom Metal, but it's only a percentage of the sound on it.

@allmediareviews.blogspot.com @alerlyking hey guys thanks for chiming in. I somewhat agree with your thoughts in that it feels disjointed. I really wanted to write a song that incorporated all the flavours of the prog genre across the last 50 or so years. But I think in doing so I've actually highlighted just how different it all is. I got quite consumed with diversity and probably didn't put enough time into making the whole thing "flow" more. I wanted all of the stuff that happens on planet earth have a bit of an 80s feel, and all the stuff that happens in outer space have more of a sludgier vibe. And also, being only one guy, it was SUCH a slog to get this whole thing done on my own. By the end of it I just wanted to get it over the line so I could move on with my life hahaha ❤️
