Just a note... the warranty is irrelevant here... The fact remains, all 5 chairs mentioned have issues. Mine at home, the 3 here at the office and the one at my friends house. The oldest chair of the bunch is mine at home, the rest are about a year younger... To me, who cares how good the warranty is if all 5 have major issues. Why would I want to go through all the hassle of disassembly and repairs myself? I can get these chairs "fixed" and sell them. If this happened to 1 or 2 of the group of 5 sure, but all 5? Come on... use your head.

I have a Herman Miller chair and have had it for around 4 years now, steelcase in itself have gone down hill in the last 10 years in terms of quality. I worked as an interior designer for offices for around 10 years. Also, you can try to replace the pneumatic pump that goes on the seat. It's not hard but it's time consuming

I have an Odinlake chair. Cost me $300 before tax. I forget when I bought it, but the only complaint I have is the arm rests. I've had it at least 4 years now. The ass is worn out now so I had to cover it, but the only thing that actually broke is cosmetics and the arm rest cushion. The arm rests loosen a lot, but other then that, it is still perfectly fine to use. I sit on it literally everyday for hours. I've weighed 145-185 on this chair. Currently 160s. Not sure I'd recommend the chair, but it's still going.

Husky Office chairs - 1/3 the price, can be rated to 500 lbs., usually used for call center / dispatch use. Don't use "gamer" chairs - your paying for the gamer tag. 6'2" / 350 / 16hr per day use 7 days a week (disability). Tightened the arm rest screws once in 2 years.

My wife was a Steelecase dealer for years. She got each of us one of these chairs. I am 6'3 210 lbs and my wife is tall, but not heavy (not sharing her weight lol). Mine had the mess fabric because we thought it would be cooler and hers is the red leather with headrest. She has had 0 issues with hers. I on the other hand have had major issues. Steelecase replaced the first seat as the padding had gone completely away after 1 year. I was sitting on plastic. We replaced it with a leather seat and that has no longer been an issue. My chair also creaks and complains with me in it constantly. People in discord can hear the popping. I hate this chair (for the price). Thank your for this vid. Very happy with my Steelcase Leap v2. Tried almost all other ergonomic chairs including every Herman Miller, Steelcase and Haworth chair and they weren't as comfortable, Embody gaming is the one with extra padding not regular Embody and they get very noisy overtime, their back construction becomes flimsy also they have issue with keeping your back straight. I don't recommend getting a headrest for an ergonomic chair that defeats the whole purpose of having a chair like that in the first place (even herman miller stated this themselves) and also all "gaming" chairs suck except for Embody gaming but even that one has issues as I previously mentioned. If you ever been to companies executive offices where they have the option to pick any chair in the world you would be surprised at how many leap chairs you're going to see.

stopped using that chair because the seat just wasn't deep enough for the dumptruck I'm hauling. Kept as a spare/guest chair and bought myself a secret labs xl a couple years ago. The secret labs gets used for 10 hour workdays and extended gaming sessions beyond and it's been comfortable. The seat could use maybe another inch of good padding but not necessary if you just get up and move every couple of hours to just get blood flowing. Phil's tiny lil baby hand throwing the bird was adorable.

I have a Steelcase Gensture since mid 2020, I'm also been a chonky boi at 115-120kg (250-256 lbs). I am also know as "destroyer of chairs" :D Since I work from home, I use the chair at least 10-12 hours a day on work days, less on weekends, but it does get heavy use on weekends in winter too (i'd say on a weekly basis I get between 60-80 hours in the chair). 1. Sitting posture - they are not designed for you to bottom them out. It's designed for the office environment to support a working posture where it supports your back. If you bottom it out, it means you have wrong sitting posture. 2. You have to spend some time adjusting all the setting so it supports the healthy posture of sitting upright. 3. If you want a chair in which you can assume "the marshmallow position" - yeah, Steelcase is the wrong brand for that :) 4. Yes, if I lean on the back I also bottom it out and it's basically not rated for people close to the rated limit to be able to lean back and not bottom out. Again, it was not designed for that to begin with. Your posture should be such that when you lean against the back, it should go to about half way and support your back in that natural position. 5. I didn't take the headrest, so can't talk about that part. All the mechanical parts are fine for me - no weird noises. 6. At our weight it's definitely at the limits of the chair capability. Back then in 2020 they did not have anything rated for higher weights sadly. Now my local rep for the brand was someone who is a professional athlete with education in sports and he had a trauma that required him to use ergonomic chairs to be able to sit for any decent amount of time, so I got an hour long lecture on how to configure the chair, what is proper sitting posture and all that stuff. IT has been fucking amazing. I got my wife one too because she also worked from home and she had her back killing her after each shift. Hasn't happened once since we got the Steelcase chair all that time ago and we got her to assume proper posture while working and configured the chair for that. It's a tool for a specific job, and frankly, you kind'a need to RTFM to use it properly as weird as that sounds. There's a reason Steelcase don't really do B2C business, they are all in on B2B. No regrets here, but user care is required.

I bought one shortly after your video. So far, it's been holding up really well. Use it multiple hours per day. Nothing's falling apart. There is a squeak when I sit down, but nothing I haven't encountered in other office chairs. There are no squeaks when I shift back and forth. The headrest still works fine and is very tight still, but I don't spend all day with my head resting against it. I have slept in the chair and the headrest has been solid when I have. One thing that I have seen is that the fabric does stain very easily and my seat has a bunch of stains that I can't get out. I weigh about 200lbs. I find the chair to be exceptionally comfortable. I'm prone to back pain if my office chair doesn't provide enough support and this chair provides just the right amount of support for me.

I've had my gesture chair for over 12 years at this point, I had an issue with the upholstery after about 8 years and they sent me a replacement seat without needing the old one back. All steelcase are covered by a 12 year warranty, you contact where you bought it from (assuming it was a steelcase vendor) and they get you replacement parts for anything that breaks in that 12 year period. I've heard of them sending out completely new chairs if there are issues. edit: complaining about an issue that happened after 3 years on a chair that is fully covered for 12 years without attempting to get the issue resolved is silly, especially when it was made during peak covid when every product made has been shit, lol edit2: I weigh around 250, don't have the headrest version, but I also work with steelcase at work and they will fix whatever problems you have and if something keeps occurring with their product they will redesign it if possible and fix it.

Up until a few months ago, it had been very solid but needed a special cushion as the mesh seat wears in pretty quick. A few weeks ago, I leaned back and the damn frame snapped clean off the mount, I went spiralling back and was ass over tea kettle, dumbfounded for a moment. Figured out what broke a few moments later and contacted the company. Yeah, 'lifetime warranty' was not honored. I ended up finding my own mounting frame elsewhere for $60 and fixed the chair. To it's credit, it's still comfortable and the cylinder hasn't decompressed with daily use.

I clean mine with a soft drill brush with hot water mixed with a tiny amount of fabric cleaner or detergent non scented. I dry it off the best I can then spray a bit of water on it and brush it down again with the drill brush very gentle doesn't have to be full speed or too hard and then dry it off with a towel. Once I do that I use a hair dryer from the distance and dry it off for like 15-20 mins until its as dry as I can get it. I wipe the rest of my chair off with Lysol wipes or Clorox wipes like arm rest, the legs, the wheels, under the chair. I never throw myself down on top of my chair and I lay back on it a lot but I don't touch the head rest much. Once I have it at that sweet spot, I never touch it much ever again. It sucks to see people deal with issues like this.

I'm 6'1", 240. I bought this exact chair after seeing the original review video here. The chair replaced a Secret Lab Titan XL (2020 model, "cookies and cream" cloth), that I really had no issues with and enjoyed quite a bit. I used the SteelCase for about 6 months and could never get used to it. Headrest positioning, creaky, wobbly... back aches, and seemingly poor build quality for a $1500 (at the time of purchase) chair. I wanted my Titan XL back, but already sold it. I replaced the Steelcase with the new 2022 Secret Lab Titan XL (black cloth). I've been happy ever since. It did get a bit creaky after a month, but this was due to a lack of grease where the lift mechanism connects to the base. I added grease to that point about 8 months ago and it has been quiet/smooth ever since.

My current chair is holding up well. Brand is Anda Seat, Model AD4XL-03-BWR-PV , supports up to 440 LB (Red and Black Verison). Bought it in Feb 2019. I am currently 340 LB(6'5"), been at 350 down to 315 since 2019). Only issue I had was the neck pillow leather started to crack, but we sewed a Fleece cover over the small pillow and no issues since. at this weight I have been through multiple stools and chairs. it's in the style of the DX Racer chairs lays almost flat. working really well and was $270 new from Amazon.

Better to get a office chair instead of a gaming chair. 4 hours: You who are often on the go and only sit down for short periods will do well with a relatively simple chair. 8 hours: If you sit down most of the working day, you need a quality chair with good adjustment options. 12 hours: Do you ever sit down for several hours straight? Then you should choose a chair with all comforts. 24 hours: Do you work in a control room and find it difficult to leave? Then you need a chair that meets extremely high demands on adjustment options and comfort. But a "control room" chair. Have one big problem... You want to live in it, you don't want to leave it. You will find solutions for not get out of it. Best to test it before you buy one, due they usually cost 1600-3000+ usd.

I'm about the same weight as Jay but only 6'. About 6 months ago I went to a used office furniture place where I live and ended up buying the most generic office chair that felt it had enough cushion to it. No idea what brand let alone model because neither the salesman nor I could find one on it. Only cost me $100 and it's working out pretty good so far. It's really adjustable, and I can't say that I've found the right configuration for the positioning of the arms just yet. I also would have preferred a mesh back, but it wasn't a deal breaker. They had some Herman Miller Mirra 2 chairs that were like $380 but they only had the size A and/or B and I needed the size C, but it also wasn't in the budget so I didn't go with that one. They have Aerons now but they're $500.

I ended up getting the Remastered Aeron in size C and just hit the 2 year mark. Aside from no headrest, it has been flawless with my big ole self. I work from home and game a bit, so it's nothing for me to be in this chair 12 to 16 hours a day 6 days a week. I got the fully optioned one that has an upright setting, 2 different levels of lean back and the lean forward for drafting setting (helps a lot when I'm working on large databases) Upright, leaned back or nearly laying down when I play space sims. I have had this chair 2 times - the first time I had it for about ~1.5 years before it got burnt up in a house fire - it was starting to squeak A LOT near the end there, but I didn't have another one to compare too that was the same age. My son had one as well and it was for the most part fine. Only reason I got the same chair again was due to the fact that insurance paid for new ones, so that's what I went with again. I will say that I am a large guy, 6'4" 310lbs and I barely fit in the chair (broad shoulders and hips), but it is comfy so I have kept using it. I work from home and between it and gaming, I use it 10-14 hours a day and so I am really hard on the chair. Not trying to defend the chair, but I think you are right when you say its great for folks that are smaller - but you put someone large in the chair and it won't last as long. I wonder if the warranty would just replace it if it starts to fall apart sooner? My next purchase for a chair was going to be the Herman Miller one, so it was nice to hear that they appear to be working better long term, but I have to wait until January (my work gives me $1500 to buy office stuff every year :D) and then I will just give this chair to my dad or maybe my daughter as they are both smaller.

You can buy all the pieces separately and Frankenstein them together and for far cheaper than buying a full premium char. I have a Hermann Miller clone back support, a comfortable memory foam infused seat, generic adjustable arm rests, a generic piston for the base (had to replace it once or twice), and skateboard roller wheels on the generic steel base. This all cost me under $200.

I then decided against my better judgment to try this cheap chair called Colamy Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair, and I honestly like this chair more. It's definitely not for heavy people (I'm like 180lbs) and it creaks a little sometimes as it is, but I've been using it for about 8 months, and it's been solid. No issues other than I had to take the armrests apart and modify them so they'd keep their adjustment setting (some guy in the reviews shows how to do it, it's easy. Took like 5 minutes to do both.) I don't think I'll ever spend $1500 on a chair again, because you're still just getting the same plastic junk that breaks and wears out regardless.

My suggestion is my own: Herman Miller Embody. I'm at around 4 years now, and (aside from the seemingly inevitable wobble in the seat's shock over time) it's practically brand new. It gets a solid 12+ hours a day of use (wfh + gamer) and I've seen no real signs of wear at all. No scuffing, no scratching, no pilling. Maybe a very slight sag in the seat bottom from its plastic support system wearing slightly, but overall it's fared extremely well with pretty heavy use. *( I'm only 150lbs which may play into that, of course.)

I weigh 115 kg (253 lbs), 6'8, use my chair all day since 2020 as I work from home (only used for gaming before that). The company I work for bought a bazillion of these chairs from the Steelcase in 2017 after a remodel, and I can only assume the reason was because they are supposedly made in the USA. I dont understand the appeal because they are constantly having to refurbish them . Some employees have even gone so far as to bring their own chairs from home. If I was to spend north of four figures on an office chair, I would rather get the one made by Volkswagen that can move up to 12mph and has turn signals.

I got a chair from KAB Seating, the K4 Premium Office Chair _(they used to make truck and heavy machinery seats, then decided to put wheels on them for office use)._ It's made for 24/7 use _(like control rooms etc.)_ and 200 kg. Super solid and no wear and tear for the two years I've had it. I'm about 375 lbs, and basically sit here all day. It has all the adjust ments you need, but the back is directly connected to the seat, so back and seat doesn't move like with your chairs. For my use, which is I sit here all day and play games, use my comptuer, watch movies etc., I wish it would let me tilt the back a bit more, it doesn't go as far back as normal gaming chairs, but I have gotten used to it, so it's not an issue. I wish the seat was a bit wider since I'm big, but I've gotten used to that too. Build quality wise, it's a tank. The metal support connecting everything under the seat si incredibly much thicker and stronger than what was on my previous chair, the noblechairs Icon with Midnight Blue real leather _(which btw., got kind of wobbly after some time even if it was supposed to handle a bit more than mine),_ so I doubt it will ever get wobbly like the noblechairs Icon I had. But it cost about the same as your chair, so several times more than the noblechairs Icon, so a quality difference is expected. I don't like the lumbar support mechanism though. It's an inflatable pillow in the back you can inflate and deflate from a pump you squeeze on the side that you can easily reach while seated. You could easily put something else in there to make it permanent instead, but you shouldn't have to at this price, I think. The head rest is nice though. Of leather (the chair has fabric that shows no signs of wear yet, and can be taken off to be cleaned). And there are all the adjustments you need like tilt of the seat, adjust the seat back and forth and of course height adjustment. The arm wrests are connected to the back like seats in truck cabs, which I don't mind as I don't use them, so I can tilt them up and out of hte way. If I used them though, maybe have them connected to the seat like on gaming chairs would be preferable. These people make the chairs themselves in England, so no OEM thing from other countries etc.. Not sure if a link to the chair will block this comment, so I'll post it as a reply to this comment.

When I was searching for a chair a few years ago after tearing my back up in a DXRacer, I watched your initial purchase review of the Steelcase chairs and narrowed down my choice between it and the HM Embody. I ended up buying the Logitech Embody and have loved it since. I'm about your size (big and tall) and the Embody has held up really well. Normally the first thing to go in the chairs I've bought previously has been the main hydraulic cylinder, but after several years the one in my Embody still holds the position like new. The only thing I've had to replace on the chair so far has been the casters, and that's primarily due to one of the stock ones bending a bit and causing it to not roll as smoothly as when it was new. It IS a bit noisy when moving around, but that's more a design problem with the spine mechanics and not degrading parts.

I'm a big guy at 330lbs and finding a lasting chair is always a struggle. One thing I look for is a metal L bracket that connects the seat and back. I've found that over time that having just the plastic side pieces of a lot of chairs isn't a solid of a connection and it will eventually break(especially if you don't make sure to tighten the bolts periodically). So having a metal Bracket is a nice feature.

My one gripe, is the lack of a proper headrest, it's got a memory foam cushion that clips on with a strap, but the strap makes it slide up a little, so it never sits in my neck where it's most comfortable, but just above the centre part of the back of my head... which is not comfortable at all.

The fabric has held up very well over 10 years, and I sit in it for work (8+ hours a day) and gaming sessions. I have no complaints about it at all, mine does not have a headrest, but I was looking to getting the gesture with the headrest. In any case, my chair has held up very well, and it's still very comfortable to sit in. I'm very surprised in the durability. Surprising to see that yours dont seem as durable, but most of it must be in the headrest. Hopefully they redesign that and make it metal instead of plastic to resolve issues.

I have the Herman Miller Logitech chair. I had insane hip and back pain using a cheap $150 staples chair. The Herman Miller one relieved all symptoms in less than a week. I've had it for over 2 years and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I've had the Vertigear Triigger 350 SE since 2018... it's still holding up well today and I'm around 300-ish mark. It has developed a few creaks but nothing too concerning, especially at 6+ years. It's pretty great with mesh/ergo.

I have a gesture chair, and it is holding up well. It is my daily office chair (5 days x ~8 hours) for the past 2-3 years. The only thing I have noticed with the Gesture is that it is squeakier than it used to be. I am 250lbs, 6'3". I have an Embody at home, and it is great but not quite as comfortable as the Gesture.

I have been in love with my headrest gesture the last few years. Its picked up a bit of creaking (not quite what you're seeing) but is otherwise flawless, fabric included. I keep telling myself im going to give it some TLC to quiet it down but never get around to it. Ive been around 220-240 pounds for the duration.

I made my own chair jay. Wasn't that hard once I formed a plan to make it. I just made one out of the old base of my old chair, but made a steel rod spine which is just covered by old cloth & form from my old sofa before dumping it. I'm 125kgs now was 155kg & it's done 2 yrs so far. Just think of the spine of a fern as the back of my seat is like that with a single ring around the outside to make it easier to cover. It was fun making it & learned how to weld in doing so.

Crazy how a chair can be so exspensive. I have had a Ttesports by thermaltake for 10-ish years now. I bought the GT Comfort being a bigger sized man. It has held up well with my everyday use for a long time. It only started showing its age a like a year or two ago. I had to replace the piston cause it wouldn't stay up, my armrests are torn but have not replaced them. I am tough on my chair and my faux pvc leather is ripping. Might be time for a new chair. It still works but is most likely at its limit. It has been a wonderful chair though. Wild how it has lasted me ten years. This is the first chair I have had and though it might be a little simple, I have loved using it.

Bought a Steelcase gesture from your review, used it about 6 months with issues of the seat padding not being comfortable enough. Sold it and bought a Secretlab chair and haven't had issues with it other than the arm isn't adjustable enough. Have been around 230-240lbs

I've had the Steelcase Amia for about a year and a half and its been going really strong for me. Got it refurbished from BTOD. I weigh about 220 lbs and bought a seperate headrest off of Amazon and installed it myself. Love this chair a lot. My only complaint is that I wish it had a little bit more cushion but even then its still comfortable most of the time. Rather unfortunate the Gesture is giving you so many issues.

So I bought one after your initial review over a Herman Miller. I had it for about 4 months before the headrest had an issue. The Steelcase team actually just gave me a full replacement and the chair has been fine since. My only issue seems to be that the two arm rests do not sit at the same height when at max extension. I'm currently going on year 3 with the chair. I'm 6'0" and weigh roughly 230 lbs.
