I've always liked the idea that Burr never really wanted to ruin Hamilton, just knock him down a peg, and was horrified when the Reynolds Pamphlet got out. The wait for its in both this and Hurrican are Burr trying to get him to stop.

I'm with Washington on this one. Hamilton was so concerned with reputation and how people viewing him in the present would affect his legacy in the future that he never considered letting his actions speak for themselves. Men like Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Reagan were extremely unpopular back in the day, but have outstanding reputations in hindsight. Even Nixon's gotten some positivity for how he handled everything up until watergate. If I were Alexander, I would have started by confessing to Eliza directly. Maybe tell Washington if he needs support from a friend, but nobody else really needed to know until decades, even centuries, down the line.
