I don't think people get what made The Rock vs Hogan so amazing at WM18 was the crowd...and not just in the arena. I watched WM 18 in a bar near Skydome and it was the entire bar into it...the entire city of TO was into it! It was simply put an amazing experience to be a part of! You felt it leaving the bar after the show was all done. Simply put it was magic and that is why it deserved 5 stars!

Most important thing for real pro wrestling fans is the ring quality , great ring quality from men like Omega , Osperay , and Okada , are a way better than any man in WWE history , and still some people say the rating is dump , the dump is you belive that .

That's the thing right, it's subjective. It's his opinion. Some will take it seriously, some will not. It's all up to you.

I think we cancelled Seth rollins that day when he praised WWE cuz 2019 imo was one of the worst years for WWE. Even though we got one of the best wrestlemania of all time, WM 35, everything went downhill after that, Seth feuds with Baron corbin lol, Brock wins the MITB briefcase for no reason, Kofi losing to Brock in a squash match just to promote the terrible cain velasquez match, Smackdown was basically the terrible rivalry between Baron vs Roman, the infamous DQ in a Hell in a cell match, And seth receiving the 2015- 2017 Roman treatment. So, seth(who was still the champ) praising WWE at that time was actually ironic. And the fact we all hated him back then cuz he was a literal troll on twitter as well

I respect Dave Meltzer for being as dedicated to wrestling and rating matches for as long as he has. My only issue is with his rating system and how he’s had matches go up to 7, it makes zero sense. I get that maybe there’s a match he sees as raising the bar for what he could expect, but that’s what the 5 star rating is for, just give it a 5 star. You can’t just go above that cause now all matches after that were five star matches are now all pushed down. Now all the five star matches are seen as not that great since I guess the scale is out of 7 stars and those matches are just 5/7 which is good maybe great but not perfect

In 2017-18 when WWE product was going down i became a internet wrestling fan who used to find ways to bash WWE.. Then I used to watch Indie matches and check out their star ratings and actually thought they're right and at the same time I bashed WWE for bad matches... After a lot of negativity I had a thought why Shawn , Bret not have more than 10 five star matches... Why Seth , AJ, Daniel Bryan and Specially wrestling machines like Kurt have no five star matches. At that time I realised his five star ratings are personal and it really depends on the style of wrestling he likes. He like kickfest , flips whether the storytelling is good or not... I have started enjoying wrestling without thinking about Dave's opinion and we all should

Meltzer is a joke, he gives these ratings to drive up controversy and stay relevant in a time when magazines are basically fossilised records of a bygone Era. If he doesn't think that Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle at Mania 21 isn't worth five stars? Then I have no reason to think that his opinion on any other match as valid.

There's nothing wrong with anyone giving a match ratings. People seem to blame Meltzer for the IWC taking his ratings super serious. It's not his fault that people prop up his opinions. He says all the time it's just his opinion, and that people shouldn't take it seriously.

Honestly, I feel like Dave Meltzer's Rating was like The Source's Hip Hop Album Ranking via The Record Report back in the day. Sure, Meltzer's probably didn't have a lot of if any of the backstage controversy that The Source had, but the rankings were basically Gospel. You had rappers like Nas with his album Illmatic that got a 5/5 Stars, sure, he still would've blown up, but without that rating, he defs wouldn't have reached the heights he did. And that's what I think Meltzer's reviews has basically devolved into. Unless it's a 5 Star or higher match, it's not worth it's salt, when a ton of 4 Star or higher rated matches were probably some of the most memorable matches ever. It's just unfortunate that the rating system attached to a lot of these matches is biased towards the amount of super kicks or highspots a match has over how the storyline up to that blow off match was. Just my two-bits on the matter.

sharing your opinion about a match or giving it a rating isn't dumb, and wrestling isn't all subjective there are objective qualities that make matches great. it's more how people react and use those ratings from well known sources as fact instead of the opinion that it is which is dumb.

Jim cornette has the perfect take on the whole Meltzer situation. That's one man with no skin in the game so he can say what's real and what a lot of current people in the wrestling business say and think to each other in private. Seth Rollins is only respectful cuz he's still a working wrestler, so he can't be 100% transparent.

I never understood how people care so much for such a subjective and untransparent match rating.

Let's look at wrestling Match ratings like this, A Blockbuster big budget movie with 50-60% Ratings, on the other side a independent low budget movie with 90-100% Ratings watched by only few people's.

I love the way that like... Simon Miller does the wrestling reviews. You give the good bits an Up and the bad bits a Down. Very simple. Did it make you feel good? Yes. Give it an up. Was it confusing and weird and ya didn't feel it? Down. I don't need all the extra bits and bobs from someone else telling me if something was good or bad. If I like it, it's good in my eyes. End of story.

People give their opinions all the time and we let it go. It only triggers people because Dave has a lot of reach and people will listen for whatever reason. Dave’s opinion has weight if you give it weight.

The same way wrestlers “put another wrestler over” is the same way Dave should look at his list. Give some of these RU-vidrs some input on what’s a 5 star match and what’s not.

Very well said. I honestly don’t get why people are infuriated by Dave’s ratings. They’re an opinion. Did people send Roger Ebert hate mail because he liked a film more than your favourite? It’s just so asinine. My favourite match of all time is Misawa vs. Kobashi from 2003, but I’m not going to get furious if someone thought Taker/HBK at WM25 was better. I think HBK vs. Angle at WM21 is a 5 star classic, and way better than 90% of the matches he’s given 5 stars to in AEW. But I’m not mad that he thinks they’re better. He likes what he likes, I like what I like, who cares?

what i think ppl miss about Dave Meltzer ratings and why it seems to favor non WWE is as he explained himself. WWE you might love a match for the pomp and circumstance around it. But on a pure wrestling perspective. They just dont compare even close to Osprey / Omega etc.... type matches. they just dont. you might prefer WWE matches. But if your understanding the metric by which he grades. He is basically bypassing all the stuff around it. great entrance. great promos. etc......from that point of view his ratings make perfect sense. i think if you subscribe to the concept of WWE is sports entertainment vs Wrestling. then his ratings are perfectly logical. Lets be frank. as great as Rollins is. his best matches all times dont hold a cancel to any of the Kenny Omega vs Okada matches. I also really liked his comments on how WWE trains you to pop at specific times. When i heard that. it instantly clicked in my head to be true. here is one more thought. on the Cena talking about Rock vs Hogan. i think this ends the discussion. Meltzer 5 star matches are great with no volume. and would be great even if you had never heard of these wreslters and there wasnt a big WWE machine behind marketing x or y wrestler and making them huge stars.

Nah I wholeheartedly agree. Wrestling matches are subjective. Because wrestling is narrative drive instead of actual competitive competition, it all depends on how it hits you. When I first became a fan, my first big angle I was exposed to was 2005 Triple H vs. Batista at Wrestlemania. Until this day if I was asked what was my favorite match, I'd say it was that. I thought the match was great! But after looking at reviews over the years, I've come to find out that many people thought the match fell flat, and was a standard match with nothing special. I would disagree on a HIGH level. But again..that's because my view is subjective. It's the angle that got me into wrestling, so I view that match as the top match on my mount Rushmore. The only match that truly made me lose my mind and made me think...Wow, okay, so THAT is what you call a good WRESTLING match...was Undertaker vs. Michaels WM25. I clearly remember watching that match in utter confusion, wondering why the hell was this match so amazing, why do I feel like I'm on the edge of my seat at every moment. That to me was when I realised what a good "wrestling" match was that didn't rely on a story the way Batista and Triple H's match did. It was just a 1 on 1, let's see who's better kinda match. So yeah, it's definitely subjective. When I think of Melterz star ratings, I don't think of the most accurate opinion of someone, but rather it's the most popular opinion. An opinion of 1 guy who is very popular. That's it. It's the equivalent to you going on Insta and beefing with a random comment from a guy who says Seth is boring in the ring. Like.. who cares? Lol
