My January 2019 D18 sat in a small Iowa shop for a year. I purchased in May 2020 and brought it to Arkansas (much higher humidities). After about 6 months it finally got used to its surroundings here and settled in, opened up a little, and became an incredible guitar. It much prefers the 48% humidity range over say 55%. Gets muddy and dulled in higher humidity for some reason even though it’s in Martin’s suggested range. Ask anyone who owns a 2019, it was a fantastic year for the D18. Mine sounds better every day.

Great video, love learning from skilled guys like this. One thought on the Martins low action is that its likely the bridge saddle has been filed to lower the action and maybe a bit too much was taken off. I have a D28 and a D18 the D28 came with quite high action so once it had acclimated I took a bit off the saddle and it made a world of difference didn't adjust the neck as it seemed perfect. The D18 came with perfect action and measured the humidity in the case on delivery and it was 45% its now at 58% and the action has grown by 0.25mm at the 12th fret not much but man its tougher to play! I will lower the action as its not fun anymore! But as was said in the video climate really effects these acoustics.

Nice video, I have a 1993 HD28-P that sounds amazing. I took it to a local shop here because that action was too low. I’m not a Bluegrass player but I do like like to dig in a little. The Tech told me that the stress rod was striped. The guy that I trust the most said that the guy didn’t have the proper tool to do anything with the stress rod. The action got really low during the winter. I keep it in its case with a humidifier in the sound hole. Now that the humidity is getting up there the action has come up a little but it still buzzes. I wonder if I need a neck reset? The guitar is almost 30 yers old.

Yes, and when it’s between the two settings can feel slack, surprised he didn’t mention that. Also .003 - 004” in in my mind is perfect relief, but that is a personal preference. Another thing, is what gauge strings are on there? If lights, try mediums, that should bring the action up a bit. He didn’t mention the 12th fret string height. At that relief, I would have just made up a new bone saddle with a bit more height and call it a day. Save the factory one for when the action works up a bit over time.

Hi Jeremy, I've enjoyed these videos introducing Mr. Padgett and his impressive work. I wanted to mention that newer Martins have 2-way or dual action truss rods, meaning they bend both ways to decrease relief and increase it. So, to increase relief, when you are turning the nut counter clockwise until it's loose, keep going and it will tighten up again as it forces the neck the other way. The new D-18 will have a 2-way truss rod, but from what I read, the D-18VS is from before Martin started using them. Cheers!

A very informative video - I learned a lot. It's quite humid here in Sydney - especially during this extreme year of wet weather, so no problem with guitars drying out. I wonder though if the more dry climates enhance the ageing of acoustic guitars - cause more natural drying and ageing of the tops. I assume the same process is probably responsible for some of the cracks you see in guitars - I wonder if the dry climates also cause the greater cracking along with more ageing?

As Paul S said below, 2019 has a double-acting rod. Very easy to adjust the relief using that. What you thought was a loosened rod was just the adjuster nut at its neutral position. Turn further past that point and you'll be able to increase the relief to a suitable point.
@JeremySheppard

yeah, that is what I was thinking the entire time, but all of the solutions did not involve that, so I was super confused and I just thought well, I really don't know much about Martins. I am a recent convert to the acoustic world, so I am used to lots of electrics with 2-way truss rods, and I am always loosening a little or tightening a little on them, depending on the weather. Glad I read down into the comments.

Interesting to see Englemann on that 3rd guitar. I got a Martin D-28 from Japan - 2004 with Englemann. Apparently they had a custom version for the Japanese market back at the time. It's a fantastic guitar, and I think the Englmann seems to have some of the properties of adirondack - despite being a supposedly softer wood. As Ben said, the woods vary within varieties as well as across varieties. Once again - a great informative video. You should get Ben on some more.

The truss rod and neck on my D18 (2014) work together as they should. Martin built these for medium gauge strings but I haven’t run anything heavier than .012s on mine and that just recently. But to my surprise I’ve found that I can run the .012s at lower action and with very little relief than I could the .010s with no buzzing and it sounds so much better. I’m building up my hands to try for .013s next..
@capohd28
@capohd28 2 года назад
That’s actually no surprise even though it’s counter intuitive. Lighter strings tend to travel more due to lower tension. 10’s are super sloppy. One interesting thought though that a long time luthier taught me is that sometimes lights will be louder than mediums on some very resonant guitars. That is the case on at least one of my dreads, a forward scalloped D-41. Sometimes heavier strings can stiffen a guitar up and lower volume. Best to just try it and see what works.

If it has a two-way trust rod, you can have it bowing in both directions. Just adjust the truss rod. When you get a little loose to keep turning it it’ll start getting tight and hit a bo the opposite direction. I would not put heavier strings on it.

Martin spec is approximately .095 to .110” on the low E. High E should be ~ .015” or so less. Not a big fan of detuning on acoustics as the guitars are designed for standard pitch, and can often get into some weird resonances and other issues when tuned below pitch. Guitars can lose their tonal balance doing this.

@capohd28
@capohd28 2 года назад
Yeah, professionally set up is often a joke. Usually the guys doing set ups (in stores especially) are not luthiers. They are often entry level people. A lot of it is also expectation. if you are asking for a low action, and then play hard, any guitar will buzz. There are many reasons for buzz, and Martins normally have some of the best necks and fret jobs out there, even the Mexico made ones. Also, one issue is a guitar drying out too much. That is a common issue for buzzing that can only be corrected with proper humidification. Dry guitars will drop action too low from the top shrinking. Most people don’t look after this issue well enough. Pucks and sponges are not good enough to keep a guitar humidified.

@capohd28
@capohd28 2 года назад
@@freebornjohn6876 Any good sounding guitar will have to be cared for. Yes, you can get overbuilt guitars that are built like tanks, but they often don’t sound and play as well as a Martin or other high end guitars. Thing is, solid wood Martins sound good because they are built out of real wood, and are built just on the edge of holding together as that’s what gives you resonance. The coveted ones are the forward scalloped braced ones, which are also the ones that are the most fragile, but sound the best. If you want an indestructible guitar, get a laminated guitar of which Martin and Taylor have some as well as cheaper brands. You won’t have to worry about those. In general, with a properly humidified and cared for Martin, you will have few issues, and if new, you’ll have a lifetime warranty.
