After the Finlands Winter war against Soviet union, in 1940, Finland was forced to give territory to the Soviet Union. In fear of a new major Soviet offensive, it was decided to build a massive defensive line to secure the eastern border. Construction began on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, Marshal Mannerheim. The Salpa Line was 1 200 kilometres long and consisted of hundreds of forts. Salpa Line is still the largest construction site in Finland. In the spring of 1941, a maximum of 35 000 men worked there, feeded and taking care of by 2 000 women. Fortunately for us, the Salpa line was never used in a real situation, but it served as a deterrent to USSR and as a mental backbone for the Finns in the Continuation War. In this video i will go to the Salpa line, hike 50 kilometers and show you little piece of this old defence line, one of the last defence lines in europe.
