I Hiked To A Super Sketchy Cave With Someone Living In It!

Ok, so this one started off fine. I was happily hiking to a cave I had my eye on for some time here in Ogden, Utah. It's Camel Cave, but I thought it was Garner Cave..
First off, getting to the cave is sketchy. You have to climb with an old, worn-out rope. When I got to the entrance, there was definitely someone living in there. There were signs of it everywhere and I wasn't about to go in.
All in all, it was a fun adventure, but it definitely sketched me out there at the end.

If you keep a sturdy walking stick with you, and pound the ground as you go, that also helps to get snackes out of the way. They feel the vibrations, and think something big and heavy is coming. So they avoid being stepped on, and go out of your way. I learned that in my youth.

Here in the South West of England, U.K. we have a lot of venomous Vipers, (also known as Adders) , sometimes the path is covered with them & on the narrow parts of the coastal path it can be impossible to avoid them. Some people recommend using a walking pole & tapping it on the ground as you move along so the vipers hear you coming & can leave the path, but sometimes when it is hot they cannot be bothered!

Garner Cave is further north and is a little longer of a hike. You also have to climb a rope system to access Garner Cave. Also be careful up that canyon, I had a run in with a mountain lion up there years back. I’ll definitely have to go check out Camel Cave!

Yeah, I am going to go back this Spring. I hear it doesn't go back very far. I hit up Garner Cave in a later video. Thanks for watching. Mountain Lions and Rattle Snakes always hang out in the back of my mind when I am out and about.

I took scouts there many years ago looking for a few of the mines above Ogden. A couple boys scrambled up to this cave before there was any rope, they said it didn’t go very far back. I’ll have to check it out someday, maybe bring my friend Walther with me, or Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson, just in case some crackhead doesn’t like me. Or snacks and water to share and make a new friend.😅

Cicada can some times sound similar to rattlesnakes depending where you are , I grew up in southern California and people all the time thought cicada were rattlesnakes . Where I grew up in my teen years was considered the sticks (very rural) so coming across snakes of all types was nothing unusual , I've seen many rattlers including a somewhat rare one , A Red Rattlesnake , I like snakes and when I saw that Red Rattler I was stunned probably the most beautiful snake I ever saw in the wild .

Before moving to utah, 40 + years ago. I was fully warned about rattle snakes 🐍 and scorpions 🦂. In that 40 + years. Never seen a scorpion 🦂 outside an aquarium. Seen 1 rattler, and heard 1. Walking through river bottom. Sounded big, heard it, backed up looking around about 5 steps, exit stage right.

Rattlesnakes hibernate in winter and in the summer they are really only active at dawn and dusk. They also don't like to go above 9,000ft. So depending where you are you may never see one, even if they live in your state. Scorpions are nocturnal so unless you are doing lots of night hiking you won't find them unless you go looking for them. (turning over rocks and such)

I watched this because last time I was in Ogden (where my dad grew up) he mentioned this cave had petroglyphs. He also said that they used dynamite to seal it off because it was so dangerous, and he had to repel to get to it because it was safer than climbing. The rocks along the trail might have archaeological significance. They might also be contemporary. I don’t know a lot about the natives that lived in Ogden or their culture-namely, if they were sedentary and had buildings. But it’s a common practice to not make sites conspicuous to help prevent vandalism.

What you called quartz river rock fused into the gray matrix is called a Conglomerate. Why you did'nt close that opensteel door over the cement aquaduct is beyond me,, a drunk idiot, a dog, kid and even wild life could easily fall into that fast moving water trap, Judging by all the graffitti on the rocks that place is well traveled & that steel door should be padlocked being so close to the urban city sprawl of neighborhoods just below. No suprize someone is camping, living or staying in that shaft/ cave being so close to a city, The water hatch below is likely the persons water source, Again only a mindless camper, hiker or homeless person would leave the hatch open, Summer heat does have a way of impairing peoples judgements & making bad decisions. like walking or hiking uphill in the mid day summer sun. All those stones set flat in the path that looked like pavers are likely the effort of an ambitious mormon miner to keep erosion down or maybe ease the struggle with wheelbarrow going up and down that hill.. Mormons are known for being industrious workaholics, to say the least.
