3D printing tip for you: when you're making something circular, don't export as .stl. Export as .step and put this directly into the slicer. It will then give you the highest possible resolution circle instead of getting a manysides-ahedron, as it reads it more like a vector file than a bitmap if that makes sense? Lovely work though. If I could afford the negative space to open them this would definitely be my preferred sandpaper storage. For me it's little drawers instead; maybe I'll put the files up one of these days.

As a custompainter I can agree your solution is handy. The only thing I would change is an acrylic cover for the sandpaper roll. So you can see when it runs out.

GREAT DESIGNS!!, For the roll of sandpaper holder. you could fix the issue by replacing the hacksaw blade with a small rolling gearwheel mechanism that could score a line of holes across the segment you would like to cut, then pull down and pull away , paper should tear at the compromised scoreline before any other place. A more simplistic approach could be a spring loaded bar of small nail heads or pins , you press against the bar, holes are pierced and as you release pressure, the springs pull the bar away, you can then pull down and away. looking forwards to seeing more designs, you've earned yourself a new subscriber :D

Love the sandpaper storage. I wonder - could you have printed each segment with a dowel hole through the bottom half and then a 3D printed dowel "spike" (if you will) coming out of the top? that way, if you want to add more, you haven't got to cut any more dowels, they would just stack on top of each other and you'd just need to move the top wall mount up.
@AdrianTache

For the first part, you could make one of the endcaps press onto the inside of the sandpaper roll in such a way that it pushes it out when spun, and I think that would help with getting more out once you cut it. Alternatively, you could just make the distance between the exit and the cutter larger, so there's more surface area to manually push down on.

GREAT STUFF from you my dear man!! Didn’t need to say that as it’s always great stuff!! Holes?! Perfect amount of holes matey perfect! The 3M roll out storage is totally amazing! However I was pleased you explained the gap (it really shows on your video) so now I understand and I would make it again. I would put the video in front of the 3M people and their input??!! The rip off unit, just the right amount to pull for the next use. Perfect! Chisel storage, love it man! My chisels wouldn’t leave their current wooden home for anything less!! It’s all just ACE and the thought and the learning you pass on down is so gratefully received. Great just great man! Bob England

1) You store sanding disks horizontally in trays that have to be swung out and back to access. I store them vertically with separators, and can just lift the one I want. In this orientation only the edge is open to dust- a trivial area (if you worry about such things). And there is little wasted space. 2) why would you want a door on your chisels? Two extra operations to retrieve a chisel. You have more delicate items just hung on the wall. 3) Roll sandpaper- dust on sandpaper does no harm (it will get that immediately you start using it!)- but a follower over the roll (as used on some toilet roll holders) over the top does the same job. And much faster to replace. One touch retrieval is the gold standard- in one motion the tool is in your hand in the orientation it will be used. Doors, drawers, etc are inferior to this. Your side motion of the paper holders means that wall space is twice storage space. Inefficient. I note that you have to orient your fingers to hold back the holders above and below the one you have selected. Having the holders magnetically attached to each other makes this worse- much better to have the magnet retain the holders against the wall. 3D printing is great for optimizing workshop storage, but remember- 'perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away'.

The sandpaper dispenser is a great design! I made something similar for the kitchen to dispense/store lids for reclaimed yogourt containers. I'd lean more toward a metal pin rather than wood. I suspect it may wear in, and cause more sagging. Great video!!😃

Love the design, it looks cool and functions really well. Some ideas to improve the sandpaper storage if you ever end up doing a second iteration: 1. Consider adding a second dowel that only connects the bottom plate to the top plate on the opposite side from the hinge-dowel. This would act to keep the assembly square and help even out the load so it’s not all creating torsion stress points on the single hinge. 2. On the aforementioned supporting side, add magnets to that side that attract magnets in the boxes, or something like stainless steel if that gives enough pull. This would make it so layers are still held in place, but they aren’t held to each other, reducing the odds that you open more than one drawer.

I believe you have solved this problem with sand paper storage. Efficient on use of space and easy to get the paper out without it fighting you. Nice job! I tried some designs that look like a subdivided file drawer which were an absolute waste of good filament.

Hi 👋, Swedish Maker , that is a great idea, back in the 80s, I purchased a four roll rack, to hold production paper, it consists of a metal mounting bracket, Which had two metal rods going across, and then there was a grey frame that I think was injected moulded, the back of it clipped on to the metal rods on the back mountain plate, each roll of paper was plastic rings on either side was a series of lugs, and the roles of sandpaper sat on the on the log., and I think that there was a ratchet to stop them rotating round, and then the paper went through a sprung loaded clamp with a serrated edge, so you could tear off the length you required, I think the company was called WORTH , not sure whether they are still going, I’m not sure if I spelt it right, as this is not one of my fortes , Great idea for the 3M‘s/festool round discs papers , I used to hang mine on the inside of a very large cupboard, just On Dowel, I find it amazing what can be designed on 3-D printers nowadays? , A bit beyond me, I’m afraid me very old school, 70s + , Keep up the amazing work , don’t lose sight of your holes, 🕳️, and be very careful of the Event Horizon, The whole that you’ll never come back Out of, 😂, stay Safe, from the moulin,

Quicktip for the inserts: leave them sticking out about 1-2mm while pressing with the soldering iron. then quickly push the rest 1-2mm with a flat metal piece. That way you get a nice flush insert which also looks just great.

It's important, too, that you use the lowest setting on your soldering iron, and do not force the fitting in - allow the heat and the weight of the iron, with very little pressure on it, to insert the fitting.

Good work. The material you choosen there can be a problem. PLA and equal tend to change shape over time and when those hinges they could potentially sag over time. Though yours are pretty thick so it may work :) I have alot of sanding discs to. 10+ packages so i need something but i like compact compartments so i have them on shelves that i pull out instead. Not as fancy as yours :D I do ALOT with 3d printer to. everything from dust caps to cases to gridfinity style stuff. I just need to get my YT running showing what happened last couple of months :D

Awesome job integrating 3d printing into the shop! That said, for me personally, the sandpaper storage is a bit over-designed. I would have went with simple wall mounted drawer units made of 1/4" plywood. You can install dowels as stops so they don't fall out when changing discs. And because they open straight, you'd maintain more wall space.

Love the ingenuity and high quality in your editing and videography! One note regarding your 3d printed shop storage though. You may not have an issue where you're at in the world, but it's worth mentioning that PLA can deform in a garage that isn't climate controlled. That's what happened to my sandpaper storage last year. PETG however works beautifully, and prints well on the P1S.

Maybe a small improvement would be to make the numbers on the Sandpaper storage an indent system as 7 segment numbers (like old digital watches). You could then infill the segments with a pen colour to show the number. This would allow one module which you can customize as required. If you had your grey version you could use a black marker pen to fill in the segments needed to make the numbers. If you change things around you just need some alcohol to clear out the digits and re-ink the new numbers. Otherwise a great system you have made.

Regarding heat press inserts, you can get special soldering iron tips that are designed to push in the inserts properly. They look like a small barrel on a larger barrel, they fit inside the insert and press it without twisting or any angle. I can't remember which online shop/auction site I got them from, but they were cheap and work fine. I don't think you can get ones with an integrated element, like you would use in certain soldering irons, but if you have an iron that takes the solid tips, then you'll likely find exactly what you need.

👍 Wonder how long it will take for the sandpaper dispenser to disintegrate :P I would probably like the slit at the front so you don’t have to reach in under. Also moving the cutter further from the slit so it’s easier to feed through some paper since the cut is going to be flush it would easily be annoying to feed that first bit through if its even a tiny bit hard to reach. Also magnets for the chisels :)
@ice4142
@ice4142 Месяц назад
It is quality work but my issue is that it takes up more wall space to use than a simple rack. You need quite a lot of space on the wall just to store some discs. You have the width of about 6 sheets to store two. That is not very efficient to me. I also don't see the issue with dust. Some sort of tiling box/bin would do the same job but would take up less wall space. But it's a cool design and aesthetically is lovely

Great product and the idea is brilliant, but i have noticed a negative with your video. Now I appreciate the fact that you have given advertising for PBC WAY and that they will print the file for anyone who buys it from you, but i really do think you're definitely missing the boat on this one. By this i mean that you are offering the file to print the product for anyone who has a 3d printer which is great but you are definitely going to miss the opportunity to be making some good money by not offering the finished product too instead you're going to be giving it all away to pbc way and anyone else alike. This will then be advertised on the likes of temu etc within a few months basically at a price where people will pay less for the finished product rather than just the file to print it off themselves. Hopefully you may have a change of mind and maybe get your share of the proceeds from your idea. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

@TheSwedishMaker
