Okay, let’s clear a few things up. I’m a Brazilian Military Police Officer. Officer as is a Commissioned Officer, I’m a 1st Lieutenant. Let’s go through a few points quickly: 1. Cracolândia exists out of a practical need. There have been multiple attempts at breaking it up, but that results in two things: either the addicts split up and start fucking the rest of the city, or it’s just reestablished somewhere else. The fact of the matter is that junkies will keep on using and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. 2. Cops aren’t afraid to go there. You can even see a GCM car parked on the entrance on this video. We don’t go there because a - we can do fuck all about it and b - we are needed elsewhere. When a serious crime ocours - murder, for example - we do go in there to keep the peace and pick up the pieces. 3. The police’s job in cracolândia is essencialy to keep that shit from spreading and spilling over into the rest of the city. That’s the only strategy that’s proven to work. This isn’t a law enforcement problem, this is a public health problem, and it needs to be adressed as such. Problem is, once again, no one knows how to solve this. Nothing we ever tried worked, although some strategies have proven effective in implementing harm reduction. 4. This guy is a fucking idiot. When you go to cracolandia throwing money around, all you’re gonna do, besides fuel these people’s addictions, is to create general chaos as the junkies fight for the cash. These last people sure as shit are not gonna share it. They’ll fight over it and get hurt and then we’ll have to go in there to reestablish order and treat the wounded. 5. As far as dangerous places in Brazil go, cracolândia isn’t that bad. Junkies don’t have guns, they generally don’t have knives and they generally aren’t agressive. The dealers in there have guns, but they’re rarely used as that attracts police attention. Most security in there is accomplished with fists and intimidation. No one picks fights with dealers. 6. The only reason why this guy couldn’t go deeper is because he’s filming. The dealers wouldn’t have allowed it. I don’t thing he’d get killed, but he’d certainly get warned and harassed and wouldn’t be able to stay for long before getting chased off. 7. If you think what’s shown in this video is bad, you have no idea how much worse it is in the heart of cracolandia. Try going there at night to see a real vision of what hell looks like.

Police can’t do much with the users, it’s an ongoing problem for at least 20-30 years and there is no solution on the horizon. The Luz station is really pretty, it was built by the English and they based it on an Australian Railway station

I'm from São Paulo, and what this policeman is saying is true, no one has found an effective solution to solve this Cracolandia problem, and when they went to interrupt the flow that existed there, the addicts spread throughout the city and created small Cracolandias around the city that for sure and with time they would get very big, so we wouldn't have a Cracolandia inside the city, but many and scattered throughout the city, this citizen stayed here for 1 day and thinks he already understood the whole problem, and as the policeman said, go there in the middle of the night and get a glimpse of hell on earth itself.

I lived in a apartment really close to this place, for a few weeks before decided it would be better not to continue living there. Couldn’t sleep, people screamed randomly at night, cops sirens, etc. They aren’t violent usually, except when something out of the normal happens and that brings chaos. Giving money away and walking shanking said money, like this guy did, often gets too much attention can result in a chaotic mess. It can put people in danger, people can get seriously injured.
