You just need to understand the history of that place, it's not the normal kinda slum that spring up within the city. This is an old settlement long before the Europeans arrived the place known as Nigeria today. Most of the resident of that place are origins of Benin Republic & Togo, there's a similar place in Benin Republic called Ganvie. French & Britain only came to create colonial borders that divided them. The Lagos state Govt have been trying to remove them but they claim it's their ancestral land, hence the loggerhead and stalemate on the community.

@naijaforce101 you say the government has been trying to remove them, have you ever wondered why they refuse? The government is meant to provide suitable alternative but there is no aid. You can’t just tell dirt poor people to move when they can barely afford anything, talk less of affording to relocate to a new place. The government of Lagos state has failed them. The whole situation is just depressing.

Not only can Makoko be cleaned up and preserved, it can literally be a tourist destination. Instead of harnessing the potentials our vision-less government would always try to clear out the POOR to appeal to the RICH. We need visionaries who can work on developing our communities from the bottom up.

@vaughnreedjr6592 no that's just not true. Sure there's some places in India that look worse than some places in Nigeria but that would also be true for any other country including rich countries. Overall India is doing better than Nigeria which is a bare fact. What surprises me is that you sit there, spewing hateful racism against a country that never colonized you, never hurt your people and has done nothing bad to Nigerians. Yeah sure there's some racism in India but that's also true for Nigeria where you have tribalism, colorism and as your comment shows, racism. Why do you choose to be like this when you can just be at peace and not hate your fellow man? Instead of dragging down another poor country maybe work to improve your own.

First, shame on the Nigerian government (and specifically the African ones) for being so shamelessly selfish in treating those people of Makoko (or the vulnerable) the way it does and it's an American who shows love...shame on us Africans. Second, thank you for this content and can we start a debate on the whole birth rate in Makoko? How can it make sense to them who are already poor to have so many children who aren't even all able to go to school? Lastly, can you ask Africhange to come to Angola because western union in Angola is a true hustle the way it is organised through some banks (really no one likes going to those banks to get their money of remittance and Western Union does nothing about it). Maybe having competitors it will help change the way customers are treated.

This is very sad! The Nigerian government should do something to help these people. That President needs to step down; resign and let someone who cares about their country and people take over!!! Someone younger!!! I am the 13th of 15 children. We were poor and my older siblings did not have much schooling but they worked and helped us younger ones! We got out of poverty; not to vast wealth but to where we could all be contributing to each other’s needs.

Why put the shame on Africans when it's less than 1% who rules all? "Understand that you are president, but the business people run Haiti, as they wish, as we wish" (Amy Wilentz), like in Hati, global superpowers run resource rich countries for their benefit. At the threat of death, they can achieve much. All they need is the control of the throne, and they control all. So why blame a whole racial group for one man's mistake?

Sorry but its not just the goverment. In west (europe) people pay tax and there is limitations on wealth. Africa doesn't have that, its clear when you look at the gap between the rich and poor areas in the video. Basically Europe and Asia limit the market to create security but Africa is run by the market. In regards to fighting poverty, its wasn't just goverments that started regulating the markets there where Unions and the labor movements. Countries like Nigeria, lvory Coast and other hard-core neoliberal countries need a more critical approach to gab between rich and poor.

Watching the beginning of this video, it's sad how the Nigerian government can not see that there is urgent need for massive education and enlightening of the people living in this community as well as provision of amenities suitable for humans. Rather, they are just interested in building more unaffordable housing. Something needs to be done fast if not, we are simply creating trouble for the future because all these children lacking basic amenities are easy targets for gangs and all manner of evil people. We need to educate our people that having more children than you can look after is a sure way to remain in poverty. If you are struggling to provide for yourself, it is unfair, selfish and wicked to bring a child into the mix and worst still, expect that the children will get you out of poverty. It's high time we started a massive mind changing campaign on how we view children and make people aware of the dangers they expose children to when they are born into severe poverty.

I may agree with some of the things you said but you are focused on only seeing that as a problem probably because you think underpopulation is not a problem. Population is not a problem if the government can utilize it and make them productive. The government has no trust in it's people and see the white man as gods. As such they would rather patronize the whiteman than allow their own to build it. The opportunities in our lands are endless, yet we are not encouraged to build things ourselves but forced to develop a taste for foreign goods that is detrimental to our economy and wellbeing as a nation.

I am sad nigeria is having many problems, a country well known for being top 30 country with highest gdp nominal/PPP in the world and ranked 1st in africa. Let me tell you a story i heard, a nigerian man who went to UAE asked an emirati citizen why their country is so developed and the citizen of this country got every opportunities that most people around the world are deprived off even though nigeria not only do they have oil and gas but also machinery supplies, agriculture, electronical products, construction materials and many more. The emirati citizen replied : because we have an honest government be willing to do what's necessary for the nation's survival and does everything for the citizen by providing them money, safe and modern infrastructure which i guess all of african leaders are evil which you and other african will ever had to endure.

From my research, I conclude Africa is the richest continent with the world's poorest people. Under the facade of helping Africa, there is a continuation of colonialism by the West. So, financial aid is provided by them. But they make huge profits from Africa's raw resources(which is a lot more than what they donate), and many African governments allow this exploitation. Thus, they are stealing the continent's wealth.

What even wild is that Nigeria have 8 time more arable land than all of North Africa (plus Egypte) combined…but despite that just Algeria or Morroco alone produce more food and have a better food security…like what their governement is doing ? Without mentioning that they don’t just have land but also oil, gaz, rare earth….

Great documentary! And bless the american 🇺🇸 that help out the locals ❤️ Nigeria 🇳🇬 is a great country, it just need to adjust the redistribution of wealth some, and create a health system that cover more people. Not rocket science, and with it Nigeria can easily be among the top 10 countries in the world on all rankings 🥳

The problem of these village people that even if you try to help them they won't listen. You tell them to build bathrooms, have less children and stop throwing trash in the water but they will never do sth right so they're contributing to their suffering. Our government is tired of them being stubborn and left them as the like .

Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria and the most populous state in Nigeria. It is congested. The Nigerian government should send them to their various states. These people don't even care about their condition, yet they have more children than rich people.

The government can be creative with this place and make it better. This is not the only floating town n the world but they are not this terrible. Even Benin republic has a floating town which looks way better than this. Lagos is not creative when it comes to town planning.

This oyinbo man left his comfortable home in the USA came to this place to do all he can to help the people of markoko. Meanwhile the Nigerian senators just bought 2023 model SUVs worth over 100 million Naira each for themselves, whereas these kids in Markoko don't have chairs and desks they seat on the floor to learn. Imagine how far such money will go in solving the problems facing this community and the likes of it in the country. Selfish Nigerian politicians without compassion, patriotism, or capacity to do good for Nigerians. Very heart breaking 💔 situation in our country. May God bless this American man, bless him and his family greatly. May God shine His face upon him and be gracious to him and his generations to come. In Jesus name I pray.
