Good work man - very helpful to see the impact on each sim. Baffles me that ACC remains so poorly optimized!!
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
It baffles me too, although it does offer much better visuals than most other sim racing titles _if_ you can afford to turn those settings up. However, when you turn the settings down to get stable frames and good performance it just looks terrible with things such as objects popping in and out poorly, bad blurring and some kind of dithering effect on the foliage and decals which make it look super grainy too. Hard pass from me, even on desktop mode, ACC just feels off which makes me rather sad because it has the potential to be amazing 😢 I mean, I even did an 8hr race and 9hr race last year to properly see if I could get used to it but I've not had the inspiration to start it up again since.

I think a lot of people just assume that a top of the range card will solve every issue but, that's often not the case. It turns out that some software just isn't optimised well so it doesn't really matter what kind of hardware you throw at it unfortunately. The ones that _are_ optimised well though...wow, they're just a treat to experience 👌

That's awesome dan. Even if it's not good value for money, still nice to have a new toy 😁 and hopefully there's a bit more peace of mind for you in terms of being able to run things reliably. Next thing might be to upgrade the HMD? I found even without changing anything else, I got a massive improvement in experience going from Vive to reverb G2. Just a vastly better image, even with the same or similar settings.

Oh man, since all of the recent upgrades the rig hasn't skipped a beat 😍 so thank you again for that! Video processing and rendering times are much better now too so I can get through my editing much quicker and spend more time enjoying myself instead of just doing the backend stuff on the channel that nobody really sees. Interesting observation about the HMD though 🤔 I might have to look into that since the Oculus is nearly 5 years old now and probably due an upgrade too at some point. The biggest hassle about that would be making a new sticker though...

It was interesting to hear you open this piece with "for the cost it does not stack up" but close with "it really has made the encoding, recording so much more seem-less..." i think you can justify your expenses right there... This is great content, review and insight.... i was thinking of a GPU upgrade but given i am happy with current setup this piece has confirmed for me there is no point unless running triples or VR which at the moment i do not. More time to save those pennies.. Thank you Dan

Happy to be of use 😎 especially if it helps you make a sound financial decision! Like I said, these things definitely aren't cheap right now so you need to really consider if it's worth it or not 👍 and for most people, unless they're running super demanding hardware like you mentioned, it's really not going to help out. Looking forward to hearing about what you decide to upgrade instead 😉

Oh man, I can't race without VR anymore, it's an absolute game changer in the most literal sense of the phrase. I must admit I did have concerns about my eyes too but after nearly 5 years of exclusively using that headset my prescription hasn't changed a bit so can confirm no lasting damage 😉 although I am running custom lens inserts with my prescription and a blue light filter. Also a good idea to wash the foam pieces regularly too 🥵

6:16 The cause for this isn't usually a GPU bottleneck, it's usually a CPU bottleneck. The CPU handles not only the game logic and physics, but also the online encoding. Most online games these days don't have this issue, but sim racing titles are know to be rather old and built on old engines, back in the 4 core era, so they only utilise part of the CPU, no matter if its a 4 or 16 core chip. Your R7 3700X is good but the new Zen3 chips (ie 5600X or 5900X) offer significant IPC (instructions per clock) gains and improvements to the infinity fabric (how the Zen chip let's talk to eachother). I noticed an improvement in games going from my 3700X to a 5900X. With the biggest improvements being in CPU limited titles and in VR where the CPU is more heavily utilised. TL:DR - Upgrade to a 5900X when you can 😂
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
That makes a lot of sense 🤔 and I would have thought that the new AMD CPU would have been enough of a bump over my old Intel but seems like more power is needed to be able to get rid of that drop in performance when going online. To be fair though, it's not terrible in the slightest now, but it certainly is noticeable.

The market is still ridiculous at the moment with hardly any new components available, it's the same for sim racing in general too. So many rigs, wheels, pedals etc are out of stock so it's just a case of being able to find something that will make do 👍 trust me, I would have kept on running my old 1080 for another few years if I had the option and kept those extra dollars in my pocket 😅

Interesting - your experience does go some way to reinforcing my own opinion, that AC is the most versatile platform out there, and because of that, there are new players all the time for it. If iRacing toxicity is putting you off, I'd love to see you going down some AC rabbit holes and finding yourself some enjoyable car/track combos, and showing how you got there. Whenever I raced online, if the organiser pulled an absolute blinder in combo - either unexpected or lesser used (or both) - those were always the best races. Practice was fun, racing even more so. Now I'm almost exclusively offline, I still try and find those rarefied unicorn combos, and when it comes off, it's SOOOOOO satisfying. Showing new players the process and possibilities could be really valuable - there's more than GT3 at Spa out there...
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
For some reason it took me forever to actually try AC for the first time, last December to be specific. No particular reason, I just never prioritised it really...but now I feel like I missed the boat on this one _big time_ mate! The scope for replay-ability is absolutely massive and, as long as one actually enjoys the driving itself, then it'll take a long time to get bored 😁 especially in VR with the Patreon version of CSP and Sol which feature the advanced weather and rain. On a side note, and old track that I made in rF1 (Circuit Thermalito) has just been converted over to AC so I can see myself making that the 'official test track' of the channel, for want of a better phrase. Can't wait to try out all sorts of cars and _really_ see what AC has to offer!

@@DDFRacer OK, so that is freaky - when I ran one of the racing clubs at RD, I used Thermalito for the rF1 Caterham mod in several events, because they had mega slipstreams and they were really good fun round there. ACC actually is bottlnecked by CPU as well. I made a lot of tests in it (comparing fps in fpsVR) and found that lowering graphycal settings does not increase FPS in VR. You can turn down everything and fps only grows 2-3% compering to EPIC, only GPU utilization drops. 3080 with old 6700K(not overclocked) can handle EPIC settings with 160% VR pixel density on Pimax headset. But. As soon as you strat adding cars on the grid performance drops significantly. CPU time grows and you can do nothing. Only setting minimum quality for mirrors helps a little and limiting visible cars. In hotlap you can get good clear picture, but in race - impossible. And even on 160% of pixel dencity ACC looks like... I do not know... It hase a lot of flickering on vegetation and small objects, shadows appearing and dissapearing under opponent cars, track objects popping out of nowhere. It brings a lot of distruction in VR immersion. In R3E or rFactor picture is far more crisp and calm on much lower settings.

Like Raceroom, ACC is also very dependent on single threaded performance especially in VR. I had to upgrade from a 3900x to 5800x before I could get a constant 90fps in my G2 (+3090). And even then I had to decrease the number of cars visible to ~18, reduce foliage, and have low quality mirrors. All seem to be very CPU hungry.
@Case_
@Case_ 3 года назад
Same goes for rF2, AC and of course AMS1. The best multithreading-optimized sims are AMS2 and Project Cars 2. Then probably ACC (it's still very single-thread limited, but at least can take advantage of more threads than just one or two the other sims are using).
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
You're definitely not the first person to mention this, and I'm sure you won't be the last either, but I honestly had no idea that ACC was so CPU limited. I was always under the impression from what I'd seen around the forums and what other racers had told me that GPU was king when it came to making this sim look good and run smooth 🤔 but happy to be proven wrong and it would certainly explain why I was still having issues.
@Case_
@Case_ 3 года назад
@@DDFRacer Don't get me started on what people regularly claim on forums compared to what the reality actually is... ;) But ACC in particular is a pretty complicated case, since it kinda needs all things combined and depending on the setup, your bottleneck might vary. But it will often be your CPU's single threaded performance, provided you're not running a resolution/detail settings that are way too ambitious for your GPU. Also Raceroom technically does run multithreaded, it doesn't use just one thread, but the one main one (similar to ACC or rF2) is the one that limits your overall performance the most, and it could certainly be improved a lot in this regard (but probably not while it's still DirectX 9). It technically uses around 2.5 to 3 threads if I remember correctly (it's been a while since I last tested it and all sims are constantly evolving, obviously). And the most performance limiting option in Raceroom in my experience is the number of visible cars - I've always used the downhill section at Spa from La Source towards Eau Rouge as a sort of stress test for this, it's one of the most demanding spots on any Raceroom track as far as my PC is concerned, at least.

Happy for u with that 3080 Enjoy, I have all the Sims and ACC is the only one that graphics look so mixed feeling for me on EPIC setting 3440x1440 there are some stuttering moments also some textures feel cheap , draw distance unnatural overall compared to Raceroom and ACorsa the AcorsaCompetizione feels un finished .

I definitely agree with you on the way ACC feels and looks 👍 the way details pop in/out is almost like a grainy fade effect which just looks really cheap and ruins the immersion in VR. The Quest 2 is a really good upgrade for sim racing. I had a CV1 before and the ASW and frame interpolation is way less stuttery than the CV1, especially with the quest in 120hz mode. And despite having a much higher resolution it doesn't take that much more to run it, I still use most of the same settings with just a tweak here and there. It still is hit and miss on the games it works well on, but the extra clarity still makes every game better.
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
That's pretty interesting 🤔 I would have thought that running higher resolution and frame rate would have dropped the performance quite significantly and that's why I've not really thought too much about upgrading from the CV1. Although I guess now that I have the extra horses it could be worthwhile...although it doesn't matter what I do, the potential upgrade list never seems to get any shorter 😅

@@DDFRacer The resolution and framerate does take more to run but you can change it from 72 80 90 and 120hz. But the asw works so much better that on games that I can't run 80 or 90hz I put it in 120hz mode and it'll run in asw at 60 and it's not really noticeable.

I dont get why you still seem to have issues with Dirt Rally 2, especially with the newer 3080. The only thing I can think is that the AMD CPU you have is the reason. I have seen a fair few people on an AMD Ryzen chip struggle. My old system, which I used when I last spoke about Dirt Rally 2, had an i7 6700k in it. And my current system is a 10700k based system. Dirt Rally 2 runs great in VR for me, and looks good as well. Back when you first tried Dirt Rally 2 in VR, I remember posting some tips to help you out with it. At the time I used a GTX 1080 as well, and to this day I can not understand why your performance was so bad with that GPU in Dirt Rally 2 in VR. Yet I had it fairly high on settings and got a rock solid 90FPS in a Rift CV1. What I can say though, is that these settings are the major problems settings in Dirt Rally 2.0. Either on a monitor or in VR. Crowds - This REALLY needs to be set to low. In fact, Crowds needs to be set to low in any Codemasters EGO engine game. So Dirt and F1. It causes FPS drops and stutters all the time, and its the biggest issue in any EGO engine title. Night Light - Also needs to be set to low. It sucks performance in places where it really shouldnt. No idea why. Vehical Details - This one also needs to be set to low, at least in VR. It causes weird stutters when the cars lights are turned on, so low light/night/rain driving. Screen Space Reflections - This is the major FPS killer in VR, this one NEEDS to be turned off. No matter what GPU you use. There is a set of graphical options at the bottom of the page, these should all be set to "replay only". I know play on an RTX 2070 super now, and if I set these settings as described; I can run the game maxed out on all the other settings in VR. I can even get it to run a stable 120fps on a quest 2 via link if I drop the shadows and reflections to medium, while leaving everything else maxed out. I will actually be joining you in the RTX 3080 club in a couple of days time, I just pulled the trigger on a 12gb Asus Tuf Gaming 3080. Good video as always, hope some of the suggestions for Dirt Rally 2 help you out. Edit: P.S I dont know about you, but I always run in Oculus mode with Dirt Rally 2 (and any VR title that allows it). SteamVR's performance through Oculus isnt always the best. Especially in Dirt Rally 2.0. If you use the OpenVR plugin inside OBS to capture footage, I can understand why. But where possible, I find it more resource friendly to use Oculus Mirror instead.
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 2 года назад
Thanks for the tips, I'll double check my settings against those recommendations and do some more testing 😉 although I've been having less troubles recently recording DIRT Rally 2.0 content for my monthly championship. The oculus mirror is definitely the way to go, along with using Administrator mode in Streamlabs so that the final 5-10% of the GPU aren't used up by the game and can be used for encoding instead, which avoids the horrible stutters and drops I used to experience.

@@DDFRacer i would highly suggest swapping to OBS studio and using Nvenc encoding. The rtx 2000 and rtx 3000 cards have a really good dedicated video encoder on them, which takes the strain off the cpu. Highly beneficial if you play and stream from the same pc. OBS studio is also updated more frequently, and is the original and true version of OBS. Streamlabs is a branched off path of OBS studio by a different group. Alpha gaming, a really good RU-vidr and livestreamer has an amazing video on 1 pc gaming and streaming setups, and i believe they compare rtx nvenc encoding to cpu encoding on the same system in one of their videos. The quality of the video is comparable to cpu encoding at this point.

@@SongDesire Already using NVENC for my videos and streams and have been doing so for years 👍 having CPU encoding always had terrible results for me so was never really an option. Started out on OBS originally and made the switch a couple of years ago since my overlays never seemed to sync up for some reason, or at least had very frequent issues with chat/notifications etc. I've considered switching back from Streamlabs but time is super limited these days due to reasons outside of sim racing/making RU-vid content so might be a while if I decide to migrate back 😉 not too far up the priority list at the moment.

Hi Dan that's a really useful vid 🙂👍 as i only use vr and was or have been thinking about ACC .I have a 2080 so was looking for info as to how it runs so may be give it a miss . Thought that I had fps issues after Raceroom update but found the opposite after I found that steam windows and navidia had all dropped updates at the same time? 🤔 so everything needed resetting. Just a thought but frame stuttering doesn't just look bad can make you feel motion sick if new to vr and also laggs all your steering inputs and not just in terms your visual reaction time .Have you any thoughts on AMS2 ? not just the visual but ffb etc ? cheers 👍
@DDFRacer
@DDFRacer 3 года назад
Hey Stephen 👋 glad you found it useful mate! If you're mostly VR then I would say that ACC isn't worth it really, even with a ridiculously powerful card like the RTX 3080, which pains me to say since the way ACC does GT3 and GT4 racing is probably the best out there, the level of detail in both the cars and the circuits is nuts. Regarding AMS2, it's definitely on my to-do list but keeps on getting pushed back for one reason or another which is a little frustrating since a lot of people are saying a lot of good things about it recently. I spent a fair amount of time in AMS2 about a year ago but the wonky AI and odd physics/FFB put me off...however the general opinion is that those issues are now fixed so it's long overdue for a second opinion.

Ya the whole GPU issues are something that's been ongoing since the 30 series launched. Semi conductor shortages are affecting everyone. Thankfully things are starting to get better, largely thanks to China's Crypto crack down. Miners are starting to sell off their GPU's and I really hope people don't buy them. Let them hang onto their mountain of GPU cards that they can't sell, hopefully it will give them a little more pause before buying everything up on the next gfx release.. Also, stop buying from the scalpers! I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if the retailers continue to artificially state shortages a little longer so they can continue to force bundles to sell more stuff.. Be patient a little longer if you can!

I don't know if you still run your old CPU with the 3080 but if you do, it's definitely bottlenecking your card. Just scrolled trough the comment section and learned that you use a ryzen 7 3700X. Dude you're bottlenecking at 30% With this processor the effective speed of your card (depending on the resolution) Is somewhere in the range between an rtx 2070 and 2080.
