This week we wanted to do an old school hunt down in Mississippi. I bought a Mathews Switchback on Bay, set it up, and took it down south! Incredible hunt on the Delta.
Not knocking Levi, but he bought old school setup, then changed the rest and sight to modern stuff. So that's not debunking anything. Plus guys kill deer with Longbows, any compound is gonna kill a deer.
Ya you don’t need it but you don’t need a Ferrari to drive either I used my 2009 diamond black ice until the beginning of 23’ killed 4+ deer a year with it it works no doubt But I bought the Mathew’s phase 4 this year and man it’s sweet smooth fast and quite but they all work as long as you practice and can shoot
Awesome way to do it. You should bring it out every year on one of your hunts. I have a 2006 PSE Fire 🔥 Flite 33 that I got while working at Cabela’s back in 06. I need to make her a killer next year. Sadly 16 years and she never tasted blood 🩸 but missed three times in one year but that’s on me. I wanted a Switchback back in the day but couldn’t afford it. Congratulations on a cool 😎 7 point buck 🦌
Very nice video Levi! You and Chris Bee are the RU-vid Goats… My first mathews was a switch back….so great and it started my journey with mathews bows to the point I now own a V3X….great bows and a great company… Thanks for doing a video like this! Thumbs way up bud
My first bow, and only bow (purchased second hand 2yrs ago) is a Mathews Outback. I learnt on this bow, and now hunt with this bow. It’s been fantastic👍 Had a major splinter in the top limb, as round as my little finger. I wrote to Mathews to see if I could purchase new limbs and even though I’m not the original owner, and the bow is about 20yrs old, they shipped replacement limbs to Australia at no cost to me, not even for the freight. I’ve never heard of service like that before, thank you Mathews👍 I’ve looked for more information about the “Outback” but it has been hard to find. I’m curious about the differences between the Outback, Switchback, and XT as they look very similar to me. Thanks from Australia for another great vid Levi. Best wishes Peter👍🏹
Got my switchback in 07’ still shooting it till this day. Never had a reason to upgrade. Constant killing piece of equipment. Glad you put this video out. I have taken several deer with my switchback and it’s really cool too bring back the old bow
I killed my biggest eight pointer five years ago with a vintage PSE fire flight, I’ve been thinking about getting an old Matthews Z7 next. It’s fun getting out the old equipment every now and then.
Hunted with my old switchback until 2 seasons ago. Still have it. Still love it. Switched to a Vertix 2 years ago and love it. Seriously leaning towards getting a Lift now. Mathews for life!!!
A Mathews Switchback is old school? lmao. Bought mine in 2005 and still kill deer with it every season. If you want old school, go back to a 60's compound bow.
My dad used this bow from release (2007) until 2022 and took his last bull elk in September 22 with it before hanging it up for a new Hoyt. Replaced the strings 1 time. These bows are just excellent and still 100% capable.
The coolest thing about this video is watching you go back in time with the bow and still shoot dimes. Just goes to show if you put in the work anything is accurate. Doesn’t matter if it’s a slider or fixed pin… hinge, thumb, or wrist strap…. Drop away or a biscuit….. the shooter and the work they put in is what matters! Good work! Congrats on the Deer!
I like how this is a headline for a video like this is something amazing like I don’t still hunt with a switchback XT 😂 along with probably thousands of other people
My local bow shop tells all the time that I'm "such a old schooler" I still shoot my 1999 feather light with a 2000 Zmax cam installed . Shoots about 245fps ,slow yes, but the energy it produces ... I hunt with my 2009 Drenalin, which is still amazing bow to this day . I can buy any bow I wish, but why ? 100g thunder heads ( yep old school again ) and a Mathew bow puts them down every year . Great video!!!
Switchback is an old model, but it’s still considered the epitome of a bow by some. Myself, I still use my 2013 Chill R and it shoots just as good as it did new. I recently put new strings on it.
Been using a switchback XT since they first came out. No need for another set-up! Fantastic bow .... I'm using old but great gear. I tune old school, build my arrows old school, use fixed blades so sharp you shave with them and I've never known it was a "this thing" as mentioned in the video, 😄! It's never let me down, other than replacing limbs once.
How much better are the new bows than a switchback? I have an XT and couldn't imagine it being too much better. It's a great bow. Been thinking about getting a V3 or Vertix. Something new but not newest.
I have a outback and v3x I love my outback but the v3x is definitely a much better bow it has a back wall and no creep way faster and over all just more accurate
@@hunterchastain9323 I actually just bought a No Cam HTR a few days ago! It's not quite as new as I originally planned but it shoots so nice. It came fully loaded with Mathews and QAD accessories for 500 bucks.
I had an original Switchback. Last wheel bow I owned before going trad-only. Agreed...one if the best bows Mathews ever made! Enjoyed the over-the-shoulder. Well done.
Thank you Levi 🙏 that’s my first bow bought two years ago and I love to shoot now. I’m old school old guy lol really appreciate you validating my choice of bow, or the bow gifted me by the most wonderful archery shop in the world. Shout out to Riverside Archery Mt Vernon WA🙏👍😎
My first bow was the Q2. In 2000. Your switchback came out in 06. Hard to find because they are still in use. I’d argue they haven’t gotten much better. Compared to my v3x and Atlas. Only slightly faster. Slightly!
When those Switchbacks came out a lot of my friends were getting. I almost bought one but decided I could afford at the time. Now I have wanted to add one to my collection of old vintage bows. Thanks for sharing.
This video inspired me to finally buy a Switchback XT. I found one in near mint condition for $450. I don't think the seller knew what they had because it was listed only as "Mathews Solo Cam Bow" and didn't even say the model. I think that's why no one else bought it. It came with a QAD rest and a Mathews quiver as well. The string needed to be replaced which is crazy because the bow barely looked used. They must've taken good care of it despite shooting a lot.
@@gordonneverdies I love the older bows but the new ones blow the old ones out of the water man it’s unreal, I shoot a older bow but the old ones can’t even come close to touching the new ones
@@jordanhudson5075 Thanks. I'll have to upgrade soon. I was thinking of getting a newer Mathews. New enough to be really good but not as expensive as the P4 or Lift.
@@jordanhudson5075No they don’t man it’s all marketing. I STILL shoot my DXT i bought new in what, 09’. New ones aren’t any more accurate, lethal, or forgiving. There is only so much “new” you can engineer into a compound bow.
I guess I take this for granted.. I never fell into thinking you need all this stuff. I started bow hunting in 89 and just never bought into All the new stuff As long as the bow is in good shape your good to go
2005-08 Switchback was 33" ATA, 318 fps, 7" brace height, & 4 pounds. MSRP was $795. MIssion line up today is 300 fps, 305 fps, & 324 fps. There's not much about this Switchback set up that I would consider that old.
To be honest, I like the older design bows from Mathews better than the new ones. The DXT & Drenalin are 2 of the best of AlL bows from Mathews or any other brands. I still have & shoot my DXT from ‘08. It’s the lightest bow I’ve ever shot. Mathews make great bows but in my opinion, they could’ve continue making these older design bows for 10+ yrs & still sell them. However, I can see why they keep updating their designs…..change/innovation sells
Well… not sure how to take this video😂 cause I bought the original Switchback in maybe 2005 and I STILL USE THIS BOW TODAY!! Guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it huh?
Seriously, archers haven't been able to outshoot stock bows since the mid 2000's when pivoting limb pockets and cnc machining became mainstream. Unfortunately i'm old enough to remember having to shim limbs in the pockets to have consistent accuracy. Quality control and tight tolerances have allowed companies to make all bows crazy accurate, and as long as you can tune your bow to perform for you your golden with whatever you feel like shooting.
I destroyed my bow a month before season this year. Bought a $250 elite tempo on ebay, swapped sight, rest and mods, tuned her up and killed a buck opening weekend. How expensive your equipment is has nothing to do with killing deer. Spend the money on a good tree stand before buying a $2500 bow.
Classic icon bow. Native americans killed for hundreds of years with primitive equipment.. Hell, thousands of years. They killed to literally survive though. Aint no well i guess we run to sonic later since i missed!!
I wish I would have kept my s2 when I was practicing a lot I shot 23 Robbin hoods in 6 months shooting 4 arrows. I bought the z7 xtreme when they first came out and still shoot it . I’ve Robbin hooded 6 arrows with the xtreme which I love and will never get rid of it. I’m still thinking about getting an s2 again.
Levi , i still have my 2010/11 Matthews Z7 almost like the switchback , if you could see me outshoot some people with modern bows ! lol !!! i will never get rid of it , all my gear on it is top notched modern stuff though !!!! good video brother !!!
I still use shoot my Switchback and have taken animals throughout NorthAmerica to numerous trips to Africa. Fred Bear killed most of his animals shooting a recurve that produced 175 feet per second. Of course we all like new stuff so if it makes you happy why not get the biggest and the best.
People act like old bow won’t kill because it’s old they shoot just like the new and kill just the same. And those bows aren’t even old. Use one from the 80-90s. Even then want a “challenge” more challenging use a recurve or a long bow
Hello Levi, please do something different, as you're the real goat in archery and the true professional in this sport and hunting which is i find you kinda different from other archers youtuber. Would you try use a chinese made hunting compound bow like SANLIDA and hunt with it. Well im not from them, but as a new comer in this sport and only use cheap chinese brand bow for a starter sometime we the new comer also wanna see that our type of entry level bow also capable to go hunt like this. This because most of the famous archers youtuber not testing entry level bow like this. Hope to see soon
I still shoot the MQ32 which is even older and slower. What’s the advantage of the newer high tech bows? I might get one if I understood (and had the money).
The switchback obviously isnt old enough to be less effective whatsoever.. I have a q32 from like 99 or 2000 that i can shoot just as good as any new bow. You have to go back to the 80s early 90s to start seeing disadvantages.
I shoot a Mathew’s outback right now I think the only difference outback is 29 ata but I love that bow and I’m to cheap to pay 1200 for a new one beat 400 I’ve ever spent and the thing is deadly
It breaks my heart to know a switchback is considered old lol my first bow was a bear whitetail ..60% let off round wheels..could Barely shoot 30yds lol 😊
I have one of the original Mathews from when they first became Mathews in the beginning they were McPherson it still has the old Metal prongs rest. I also have a switchback that I killed several bucks with. But now hunt with a newer model.
switchback and monster 6 are bows i would never sell. bought a lift to replace a z7, prior to rhe purchase finally found someone who could tune the fing thing. lift nightmare begings its not like the switchback or monster that only needed eyeballing to set them up to be extremely consistent accurate bows. modern crap needs a store, a day and a bit to tune it
great bow, better then most current bows, no gizmos, easy to tune, replace cams cables and strings without a bow press. killed a water buffalo with one using a 720gr arrow
I still actively hunt with my switchback saved up and waited for Matthew’s to come out with new model for the year bought then they released the xt later that year I was disappointed but still killing deer with the original switchback
Ya know my Mathews dealer told me not long ago, that they absolutely nailed it with the Switchback. And they've been essentially expanding on that design since then.
I caught myself on ebay 20yrs after I sold my Mq1, I did the same deal all old school. $100 bid took it and later a onefiddy. I still use a lil goose haha. Can't kill it
Levi, the key to winning bids often on eBay is to never show your bid until 6-8 seconds before bid end. i.e.(click in) make your highest bid right at the T minus 6-8 seconds mark. Then no one has a chance to see it. I use to shoot PSE before my Mathews V3 and 8-12 months after a new bow release, I could purchase a new PSE for about half of list price. I remember buying a brand new PSE Xpidite while I was driving to my hunting property in Texas one time. Bored on the freeway, I checked for new PSE bows and saw this bow has an hour left and price was at about $350. So I set my alarm and when it went off, pulled off the freeway with 3 minutes left to bid, saw the price was still under $400 and couldn't believe it so I sat there with my top bid of $450 ready to submit right before the 5 second mark. Killed a deer with it that year and sold it 6 months later for $550. Thanks for sharing the hunt.
Sweet hunt Mr. Great story and video. I still a dxt I bought new. In a case ready to hunt lol. Gave my mq1 to a youngster down the road a couple years to see if he liked archer
People can clean there wallets out for now a day bows? I still use a bear from 2016 and sometimes a parker ultra lite 30 plus and kill plenty of big bucks and does
Killed my 10 pointer this year with a switchback. First year bow hunting I was thinking about investing in a newer one but I keep seeing people say they wished kept their switchbacks
The Switchback is the bow I envied as a teenager but could never afford. I’ve been hunting with an old Parker Hunter Mag for the last 12 or 13 years. Slow as crap, buzzy as all get out, but it’s gotten the job done. Nicely done video!
I killed two deer this year with matthews z7 extreme that I’ve had for well over a decade as I do every year. Why change when this bow is a deer elk dropper that I can hold drawn for a long time when necessary
This is awesome. Been wanting to upgrade my 2020 bow. For no reason other than want to get the new hotness. This just made me realize I don’t need to at all
Are you related to Andy Morgan I loved watching him and the G man (Gerald Swindle) on a show called the hit list . Those two were great comedy when they where togather
What a great video! The Switchback will always get the job done. I bought the XT brand new in 2006 and I still hunt with it to this day. The newer bows are nice but nothing has ever been nice enough to convince me to retire the XT.
My dad shot a switch back up until last year and the only reason he upgraded is because someone had a really good deal on a new Mathew’s lol and he keeps saying he’s going back
