Those freaking MSI cards, man, they usually outlive everything else in the system for me.

The card is still fine, its just that liquid is still pooled under ICs etc where you can't get to it with the towel. Clean with IPA and dry it properly for a few days in a warm area.🔥🔥🔥

You forgot another source of conductive ions in water: air! Well, CO2 in air makes carbonic acid in water, which is an electrolyte! Electrical potentials turn electrolytes into metal etching materials... Unless a coolant is specifically an insulator, like some kind of oil or liquid polymer, it is not an insulator.

it's actually not dangerous to touch the power supply cables when it's wet or whatever because it's only 12V and DC. 100v+ AC is dangerous and DC is less dangerous

Although it is very likely that just cleaning the card completely with isopropal alcohol will bring it back to life.

I had a major leak awhile ago, noticed while playing games. Big drip... almost had a heart attack. On the bright side that card is still alive, had to take the cooler off as the coolent found its way though the threads holding on the cooler... Which is suprising considering the coolent had been in there a good 9 months ( mayhems X1blood red)

It makes sense that water didn't immediately disrupt the card. It is conductive but not as much as something that is more acidic or basic than water. Try some bleech (for basic) and soda(for acid), should be some good fun seeing what happens. There is some more chemistry when it comes to strong/weak acids and bases, but still more conductive than water.

Kinda late to this vid but I work in fire/flood restoration of machinery and electronics (wet washing electronics is fairly standard practice for us). A few years ago we experimented with a live TV by dropping it into a bath while switched on. We got a loud bang, some sparks and a popped RCD on the bath but surprisingly once we had dried the TV, it worked fine.

I wonder if a simple BIOS flash would bring it back like with Phill's card.

I know this is a year old now but I have a prime example for the safety of water spilled on pc electronics. The last time I cleaned my loop, about 3 months ago, I re built the whole thing adding in a reservoir, relocating the pump, and more. When I went to refill it I ended up overfilling the loop and soaked my 1500w corsair psu. It was dripping wet! Luckily when filling a loop I use an external psu and the affected one was not powered. I quickly removed the psu took it apart and dried it out with compressed air. Tried the psu again and it was no good. This did not deter me though and I remove it again completely disassembled the psu and proceeded to thoroughly clean it with 1 gal distilled water then about a half gal of 99% ipa then dried it with an air compressor. After reassembling it I had a working psu which was cleaner than the day I got it. The main problem with liquids on electronics is it can cause short circuits and destroy components while they are powered. Dust is also conductive which compounds the issue because the water collects the dust and concentrates it across traces and components. This is why my method worked since it removed all conductive contaminants. Fun fact if you made it this far. I often wash my keyboards with soap and water to clean them. Never had one die.

I got water on my 1080ti while running new hardline tubing. It died completely, no video output for two days. I put it in rice and plugged it back in and it works like a charm now. Crazy how hard it actually is to kill these cards.

Ex-cellphone repair guy here. Did it for nearly 10 years. The biggest risk to liquid and/or moisture damaged electronics isn't shorting out or "frying" the electronics, it's due to corrosion that takes place after. And corrosion on those contacts can take place as soon as a FEW MINUTES (though typically a couple hours depending on the liquid). Salt water, like from the ocean, can corrode the contacts in less than an hour. It's the corrosion that eventually ruins the component. This can often be fixed by dipping a toothbrush into contact cleaner (or 92% rubbing alcohol, they're effectively the same thing) and scrubbing the corrosion off the PCB (it's usually a white or green powder). On a cell phone, water inside the battery is usually the cause of immediate failure so replacing the battery (if possible) can solve that issue.

Just had water spilled on my 1080ti while computer was on a couple weeks ago. Took the cooler off and let it sit for a week, reassembled it and it runs flawlessly!

I think components have a thin protective layering to prevent ESD and water damage because they know people are not as careful as they should be. Accidents happen with water cooling.

Louis Rossmann would be able to sort that out no problem, he’s the king of repair and he’d ultrasonic it lol

The reason why is because it has a fail safe if it gets wet while running at a certain load, it auto shuts down

Well, I've exploded a motherboard trace accidentally, surprised this card still runs!

It'd been known for decades that water does not kill electronics, water + electricity (unintended current paths), water + excessive heat (water expansion can crack chips if they absorbed any of the water), or water + time (corrosion) kills electronics. Given that you're going to apply power, it's going to get hot, and it'll definitely age, the one way to prevent all 3 modes of failure is to keep it dry -- that said, short term soaking (w/o power) followed by modest amounts of heat to dry the card won't hurt it.
