Well, after a year of lambing I learned a new Ewe behavior. The whole random pawing routine didn't connect until I saw the sequence today. Paw, lay down, get up move around, repeat. Then dig with purpose, carefully lay right in the cavity, roll to one side, push hard....lamb! I get it Ewe, I still sleep so there is no pressure on my belly...decades later❣😂

Pawing is a direct response to hormones for contractions. I had a dog that needed hormone treatment to clean her empty uterus. After the shot to induce contraction she kept stopping to nest, pawing with contractions

Just like Big Marge, bless her, only 1 9lb baby who was 18.5 inches long. I have a android pelvis that it’s bony. And it’s only 18.5 width. He dislocated my tailbone, partial hip dislocated . Lifelong back and hip issues since then.The baby had dislocated shoulders and hips. This particular baby is over 6 ft and wears a size 13 shoe.

Sheep genetics. The reason I chose Katahdin sheep, they come is so many colors, paints, appaloosa, black brown and every shade in between, and they are hair sheep and never require shearing, plus they are parasite resistant and hardly ever need their hooves trimmed, if you care to believe it or not. I understand. This is a business. But as much love and care as you give them all I can’t imagine the heart break of a little baby born lost. Still born. And it looked so perfect. Love that little with the brown around muzzle and eyes. It’s so weird. I, as most of us clueless people... never knew how dang cute these babes are. And though I love so many parts of your videos.... I think my favorite is watching the babes.... run and bounce.... almost always several at a time. Or all running and jumping back and forth. Come to think of it.... it might be that the babes know immediately where to look for food. Nature is so amazing! You work so very hard. It’s not a job I could do. But your love of it shows and you give your animals their very best life. You need to have a chat with Billy. He needs to produce more girls! lol his first breeding I know you where a bit concerned... but he’s proven he’s a stud since. Except all those darn boys!!! Lol all adorable!!!! “Just sleeping” ok! Hey, we humans nap a lot if we can when pregnant!!! Lol Bet Margie was thrilled to finally deliver. But dang Marge.... maybe try have an extra instead of a huge babe!!!! That Marge may need to get rid of fluid. When my last brother was born.... he was only 6lb 3 Oz. But she lost 70 pounds at birth.... so much fluid.... mom has always been super skinny. She was so miserable with that much water... hope marge losses her fluid. For her own comfort. Also, I love to see how protective some of those moms are.... like don’t touch my baby!!! They don’t know it’s your card and love that keeps them all going. Pretty sure I’m not strong enough. But if I wasn’t thousands of miles away I’d love to volunteer to work with feeding those bottles. It must be amazing.

Marge is an interesting parallel between humans when it comes to being really large and giving birth. All the same things are true. Overly large babies tend to have trouble before and after birth (usually breathing-related). Significantly overweight human moms have a laundry list of issues (high BP, gestational diabetes, difficult labor, more c-sections). Every pregnancy is different, of course.

@LadyLithias 3 года назад
@@cherripoe9448 What's crazy is that when Sandi docked Bella, she made a sad face and pouted and then put the elastic so that it was quite into the black part of the tail. But Bella has a white tip of her tail. I think that's really weird, but my theory is that somehow the gene for "tail-tip white" somehow produces a white tail tip, even if the ewe (or ram) is docked.
@mobydickswife9512
@mobydickswife9512 3 года назад
@@LadyLithias Whether a tail is docked or not has nothing to do the genetics for coat colour. It is more that white is a dominate gene, while in sheep black is recessive and thus needs a copy of the black coat gene from both parents. Most meat sheep have been bred to just carry the white coat gene. The Rideau-Arcott ewes that Sandi has in her ewe breeding groups is a breed that was developed fairly recently in Canada from quite a mix of breeds including Finnsheep. The Finnsheep contributed the genes for multiple births (they can have up to 8 lambs at a time!) but also genes for various black, brown or spotted coloured coats. Black or painted coats are recessive but when Sandi breeds her Rideau-Arcott rams to her Rideau-Arcott ewes for replacement ewes, there is a stronger chance of black or spotted lambs.
@LadyLithias
@LadyLithias 3 года назад
@@mobydickswife9512 I think that perhaps this was a forest/trees moment. I do understand genetics (though sheep color genetics are fascinating and a new topic for me, though not quite as simple as they seem.) I just wondered why it was that Bella, specifically, has a white tip of her tail, when Sandi *definitely* banded her tail *above* the white on the tail. If the skin that produces the white was sloughed off, why is her tail tufted in white? I bred for coat color and type for several years (in mice) and was considered a bit of an expert on sheep genetics. I was amazed at the variety. For example, white mice are your stereotypical laboratory subject, but there are many many ways you can get a white mouse. My specialty was breeding black-eyed white mice, with long, curly, satin hair that was blue or red or yellow.

She really did try to get that first lamb to respond. I'm glad that the second one was ok. I wonder if she got another scale for weighing the lambs?

Watching you reach in and help these moms with the birthing has made me realize that having small hands us an actual benefit to helping life. Never had to pull any babies, but if needed to my hands would have been the right size to help. Love the videos. Very educational. God bless

I think Marges baby was laying sideways, making her look huge. Then baby turns at the last minute with contractions. Amazing how close mammals are to us!!😘😘

...we are mammals...
@24bidy
@24bidy 3 года назад
Humans are mammals and so are dogs, whales, elephants, and horses. Mammals are vertebrate animals that are endothermic, have hair on their bodies, and produce milk to feed their babies. Most mammals have teeth with the exception of the ant eater which doesn't have any teeth. Where do they live? Mammals live in all sorts of environments including the ocean, underground, and on land. There are three classes or main types of mammals: monotremes, marsupials, and placental mammals.

That didn't quite come out right, and that's why people are making the comments they are making -- you meant that it's amazing how close we mammals are to each other. (I'm an editor. 🤓 )

Hi again SANDI More colored babies yay! They are soo cute! You could eventually have a flock of them! How cool would that be! Puzzled a bit about the couple questionable ewes birthing. Some things are too hard to have a definite answer for. But overall I think things have gone really good this time. Happy to hear your thoughts are that also. Thx as always for sharing. Fun to watch all the babies run and playing popcorn! Catcha next one...

I have never, & will probably never own a sheep. Yet, I subscribe to your channel. I love the way that you empathize with your ewes and put so much concern and effort into your flock. The toll shows on your face. God bless you and keep you

We use to have a dairy farm and had lots of calves but the lambs are so precious!! Oh look at them hopping and jumping. Awwww 😘😍🥰🐑🐑🍼😁💕💙
