I knew Vietnam had changed, but I had no idea how much!

INTRO: It would be hard to come up with a better first day in Vietnam. The day began with a walk through the exotic and bustling streets of District 1 in historic Saigon.
As I looked around, I reflected on how much Vietnam had changed. The Vietnam surrounding me was completely different from the Vietnam I knew decades ago. The economic boom had transformed the country.
First stop was at a stylish local restaurant serving some of the best regional dishes from Central Vietnam. Rod, a kind Planet Doug supporter, treated me to lunch there as a way of welcoming me to the country.
After lunch, we embarked on a fascinating 45-kilometer round-trip expedition on the Vinbus - a free shuttle bus that travels between Vinhome residential communities. It was a great way to get my feet wet in terms of exploring this unfamiliar area.
Upon our return, Rod and I enjoyed some delectable iced Vietnamese coffee while perched on pint-size plastic stools inches away from the unceasing Saigon traffic. It was a classic Vietnamese experience, perfect for my first full day in the country.
Speaking of classic Vietnamese experiences, don't sleep on the humble banh mi. This savory sandwich with its French and local influences is available everywhere, and I devoured one while taking in the street life around me.
The day ended with me back in my humble but very well-appointed hotel room enjoying a rare ice-cold beer.
So, sit back, relax, let me do all the work, and enjoy this video about my first full day in captivating and glamorous Vietnam.

I admit that in my short time here, I've already gotten mixed up on many occasions about all the zeros. 🙂 I've tried to take a 50,000 note out of my wallet and give it to someone and then discover it was actually a 500,000 note. I have to stop and look carefully and count the zeros to make sure I'm not making a mistake. One interesting thing is that a lot of menus and price lists simply ignore the zeros. Instead of 27,000 dong or 48,000 dong, the menu will just read 27 or 48. People have just started to consciously and unconsciously ignore all the zeros. 😁

It seems like it has changed a lot to me. Everything seems very different even compared to the 90s when I was first here.

Imagine if Vietnam didn't have communism and was a first world nation. Imagine just how much more beautiful it would have been. It literally paradise on earth!

Looks the same to me as it did in 1970 my 1st time in Saigon, just some new malls and Big office Bld,s.I was in CuChi from 1968 to 1970,Saigon in 1970 in 1972, again in 1993 and 2004.You want to see some old hard core VC ,go up to Trang Bang near Cu Chi,they still hate Americans there,

I do hear some horn honking as I walk around. But I guess it hasn't been excessive. At least I haven't found it annoying or obtrusive.

Vietnam to many is like a faraway land-exotic and beautiful. Vietnam to me has been always synonymous with Anthony Bourdain. RIP, Sir. Bourdain.
