It's too bad they decided to handle things the way they did. Even if the decision to close their doors permanently was a last-minute one, leaving their customers in the predicament they did without any kind of explanation is poor business practice.

If it’s chapter 7 they maybe back with a new name or same name. Chapter 7 let you start all over I have seen a business do this.

I understand your feeling about how they handled this closing. However, I’m sure Vanessa struggled so much to make sure that she could tread water to save her business. She did this up to very end, and knew how difficult that it would be and to be so final. I do feel that the move, and moving into private labeling was a way to continue on after this business decision. I also believe in her/all of the team will be coming back stronger after this episode with all the oils that we love so much. Yes, this is difficult for all of us, but do have confidence that Vanessa will let all of know in time. Many blessing Vanessa🙏you got this.

@@dabzcoI did not look up the bankruptcy petition Alan referred to, but if it was a Chapter 7 than that is a total liquidation, not a reorganization. Their assets will be seized and sold off to satisfy creditors, with not attempt made to continue the business as an ongoing concern. Chapter 11 is what they would file if they just needed some relief to get their affairs in order and continue the business in some capacity. Chapter 7s are hard to "start all over" from, as filing one significantly impacts the business owners ability to access credit to start a new business, whatever the name (not to mention the fact significant customers would be rightly skittish about patronizing any future business).

So wonderful of you to discuss this today. Very well spoken and I couldn't agree more. We can NEVER compete with big box stores and we have to explain and educate our customers WHY our candles are better. Not only better overall, but less chemicals, top waxes that are renewable and fragrances that contain natural essences.

I want to start this post by saying that Allen is a very inspirational person (hope I am spelling Allen properly). Having a business, going to school, and volunteering in the emergency department….wow. It is too bad and sad that 16/17 closed and filed for bankruptcy. I feel perhaps their customer base was more limited then let’s say Midwest or Flaming Candle. Price point is such a big factor. 16/17 seemed to be targeting a higher end market and that might have limited sales or revenue. I hope the owners of 16/17 the best and lots of strength in a difficult time. Also wish the best for their customers who now need to find other scents.

I'm kindof upset or maybe disappointed is a better word in some of the remarks here. I realize their customers were shocked and surprised at how it was closed so fast with no word from them. But honestly, take it from someone who has had to claim bankruptcy in the past. It is a very upsetting thing to do. Just finally sitting down and facing the fact you have to do this is very stressful and upsetting in itself. Actually filing to do it is , well it is not a good feeling. I am sure the people who ran 16/17 are just so stressed, upset and embarrassed and just could not face what they had to do. I know when I filed I was so embarrassed to be around anyone. I felt like a failure. SO, I wish people would think about this and what those poor owners are going through. They need more words of encouragement, not words of they should have done this and that. No one knows exactly what happened, but it is a hard time right now to run a business and keep it going.

I've had to file bankruptcy. It sucks. Vanessa was dishonest and left many of us in a bind. Our businesses relied on her and if she cared at all about us, like she made it seem, she would have been more transparent instead of lying about why she was having sales. She sold off what she could and took our $ and closed the doors. That's not ok. It's bad business and downright shady. Had she said she's closing the doors and running a big sale, we would have all been understanding and also would have had the chance to look for alternative options instead of having to scramble without warning.

This sounds like more of a case of money mismanagement, that is usually the case when companies go into bankruptcy like that. I feel like candle making is huge now and other suppliers seem to be doing really well. That’s a big thing for all small businesses to remember is to not over invest your money to the point where you’re putting yourself into debt

I’m so sad for Vanessa and for the difficult decision she had to make. As for us, clients well get over it finding other suppliers aka Black Tie - already made some incredible dups , I heard. I wish her the best and hope she’s ok.

There was a designer I spoke with who worked on their rebranding back in '20 & '21. The things he told me blew my mind. Even if it's Chapter 7 & they re-open for business, I will not give them another cent ever again. All I can say is sometimes wolves will pull the wool over your eyes.

Since it’s chapter 7 don’t be surprised if they come back. I don’t think they will leave their clients high and dry. I have seen a business suddenly close because of bankruptcy and then came right back within a few months. Under chapter 7 they can’t continue selling they have to close till it’s discharged. So keep an eye out for them.

I seen quite a few comments by upset customers or people who have dealt with them and didn’t agree with how they handled things.. all I can say is I’ll be on the lookout for them and when (or if) they come back! 🤞🏽 lol

Thank you Allen as always your message is nice, clear and to the point. It’s very sad they closed. I am trying to keep my prices affordable and low as much as possible but it’s almost impossible so instead of compromise the quality I just discovered some products cause it’s just not worth it.

It really is so difficult to keep costs low as a small business. It cost me about $8 to make a 9.5 oz (soy & beeswax) candle, and sell it under priced what I should if I was trying to do wholesale, just to stay somewhat competitive in the market.

I'm so heartbroken because I did, (and its a favorite!) as well as some their others. They were so good. Now though, we have to figure out how to best replicate those scents. I have heard that some other candle supply companies (Hive and Honey Candle Co) are trying to source 16/17s fragrance supplier and try to fill that gap. Here's to hoping that you get to maybe still try Mojave!🤞

Black Tie Barn apparently had a Mohave dupe (called Death Valley I think). Haven’t personally tried it but have heard good things.

Great to see you! I had some experiences with them where I would order a case of 30 only to have the jars sold out or discontinued the next time I went back which was one of the main reasons I didn’t use a lot of their vessels. Sad to see them go so fast. I also hate when people say they can get a candle at target - so go do that 😅

Hi Niyyah!!! Wow, I'm very sorry to hear that--I found the same where vessels would go out of stock and often not come back which can make things really challenging. Yup, haha.. I tell those $5 candle folks, "Have at it! we aren't keeping you!!"

We cant compete in price but we blow them away in every other area. Spend your moolah with a small biz because the Waltons dont need one more cent of any Americans money, but small biz and hand crafters need all the money ;) PSA over.

Ive been making my own skin products and wax melts for about seven years now. I dont have a business. The reason i make my own is i know what goes into them l do buy ingredients from reputable businesses. If people took time out and looked at how much the beautiful ingredients go into handmade soap for instance im convinced more of the public would buy handmade rather than mass produced from local shops. Some of the ingredients i cant even pronounce what's all that about?

You can easily check where they got their supplies. They were not high-end. I ordered the same vessels they were selling (and claimed they designed- untrue) from the same supplier. I also know where they had their fragrance oils duped (all duped scents... not a single original... they copied Byredo, Roja, Prada, etc) and they drastically marked up their FOs. I liked Vanessa, but this whole "high-end luxury line" was a scam, and I fell for it.

@tracyc9413 replied above. Happy hunting. You'll find them all once you find those companies. I remember it took me a bit. Once you get in touch with them, show them pics of what you're looking for and they will happily send it. It will take a bit because it's coming by boat and you'll need to buy a lot but it's worth it imo.

We also have to remember that filing chapter 9 is often due to poor financial management. Also worth noting- As for 16/17- just because you can’t achieve the lowest price doesn’t mean you can still use an 80% profit margin without proposed eyeing. Candle makers now have what we see as a “fair price” whether small companies can or can’t reach an 80% profit margin. It likely shows that they weren’t placing large enough order on top of customers not wanting to pay double for something with the same value. We also can’t compare natural wax prices to inexpensive waxes sold in target shelves. At the end of the day, 16/17 sold a product with the same value as other larger companies for twice the price. They overpriced themselves out of business because they hadn’t offered a value that small candle business are able to absorb just because 16/17 deemed appropriate.

@allisongreen5855 none of the scents were original. Vanessa duped designer fragrances (like Tom Ford) at a fragrance oil supplier. For example, Calle 23 was TF Bitter Peach (Scent Memory has it) and Mojave is Byredo Open Sky. Doop has it.

@NotJenaCash I think a lot of the suppliers have the same stuff. The ones that charge more, are mostly duping. It's fine, I'm here for it lol, but I appreciate when they divulge what the OG is instead of pretending it's their own creation and marking it up. I look at all of my huge bottles from 16/17 and get so mad at myself for falling for the marketing. I'm working on Fall too. So much deliciousness and I hate having to narrow it down. Just got 3 boxes today- Doop, Stock, and Simbi. OOB there's some really good ones.

Who knows maybe someone did something that they shouldn’t have and they had no choice. Ppl steal all the time. It’s easy to judge but we don’t know the real story. Small business is more expensive but you’re shopping from a real person that gives their heart and soul not a bunch of share holders paying minimum wage to their employees and just want your money.
