I think the way languages are taught in school is backwards to say the least. Very inefficient and demoralizing.
However, speaking a foreign language can be a really fun, exciting experience and a way to expand your world view. I wanted to both share how I approach language learning and also see how far I could push things in one week.

But I feel like most people heavily dedicating themselves to learning a language aren't ACTUALLY beginners. A lot of people have previously picked up the language before and put it down multiple times already, or have had some previous exposure. I mean I'd say he's a beginner by real-world standards; not beginning from nothing but still a beginner. And I'm sure everybody can replicate this strategy--beginner or not--with a more extended time frame

Those are just excuses, and you know that. If you have time, you can learn anything. Even if you don't have time you can learn from absolute 0. I know people that were in their 60s that started to learn a second language, without having any previous cantact with it. Those people were the ones who inspired me to learn english and as many as other languages as i can. And other thing, everyone is a beginner in everything, no one was born knowing, we learn over time after all. Don't use excuses to shadow your fears and mediocrities, just try, and don't give up in the first chance you've got. If you always give up in step 4 thinking you will never be able to do shit, you'll never know if in step 5 you will be able to do that.

@@yuitomone608 Lol but what she's saying is true, even at the beginning he knew how to form future tense, participles and condicional phrases (which are at least intermediate). You CAN do anything, but the title of the video implies that you can learn a language in one week. I think you would be hard-pressed to find someone on earth who has truly become truly fluent in even a few months. I think it's just unrealistic and based so much on immediacy (and flexing, like, "who can learn the fastest?") even though real polyglots tend to dedicate at least a few years to each language. What he had learned by the end of a week is a drop in the ocean of cultural context.

@Alana Khoury Duo lingo is not a very effective way of learning a language. You'd be better off just finding natives to talk to, or watching TV shows, starting with kids shows. Just take a magazine and a story book and get them to tell you about them, then copy. Don't talk your native language, draw pictures to get them to give you the language.

The "click" came for me after a few glasses of wine at a dinner with Italian friends. I was getting bored of not understanding the conversation, then all of a sudden, my brain relaxed and instantly "tuned in" to the flow of what they were saying, and everything came into full clarity. Once your mind tunes into the channel people are communicating on, comprehension becomes easy and your skills will start growing exponentially.

A quick summary of this video: 1. Learn the top 1000 words for the language (use different methods: writing them all down and rereading again and again, record and listen to it again and again whilst doing another activity, associating the word with an action) 2. Learn most common verbs, tenses, their conjugation and connective words such as ‘on’ ‘and’ (try and understand the rules, and irregulars) 3. Try to immerse yourself in the culture by using technology to help you with your language learning (translate music, watch Netflix shows with subtitles, listen to radio stations and podcasts, read books)

Lmao you can’t learn a language in a week. This is supposed to be a different type of tactic, spread over 7 days, so that you can practice those fundamentals over a longer period. The fastest you might be able to be fluent would be 3-5 months of 8 hours a day 5 days a week for one language that is similar to your native tongue, and even longer for ones that aren’t. If it only took 1 week to be fluent in a different language, than everybody would know like twenty languages. Most advanced countries that have a generally bilingual populous only speak 2 or 3 languages on the high end. I’d plan on being conversationally fluent in 6 to 12 months depending on the language.

Tyler yea i completely agree i learned my 2nd language over quarantine where all day i spent it in german and it still took me 3 months to get to a point where i could understand most everything in tv, youtube etc its just not possible to learn a language in a week unless you have some sort of special talent with it but one week is just simply unrealistic for the average joe like me

Great job! As someone qualified to teach Italian as a second language I have to say that if any of my students would invest even half of the time and effort that you have in this one week in a whole semester the results would be very visible. Another problem with learning a foraging language in a traditional school environment is that students at the same time have at least 10 other subjects to spread their focus on and they might not be able to be as intentional with learning as an adult who has free time to study a language can be. With all this said, presenting to students language in a way to make them intrigued about the culture and interested to dig deeper themselves is sometimes all a teacher can do. Love what you're doing and I'd challenge you to do the same one week study of Hungarian language and document the journey :)

Also, he crammed the 1,000 most frequent words, which still corresponds to a rather elementary level, and he probably forgot most of it quickly after lol. It takes at least months of intense practice to be proficient in a language, it's simply not doable within 7 days. But it was a fun experiment, and I think he demonstrated that you shouldn't be scared of engaging in foreign language from day one.
@captainjosue

@@emilstorgaard9642 I have studied and learned Italian for 1 year now. My first language is Spanish. Spanish and Italian are almost identical in many ways. AND...in many ways are entirely different. Let me tell you, it was hard. So for him to say he learned Italian in 7 days is just bullshit. To truly test his Italian I challenge he go to Italy and only speak Italian to the Italians in his 7 days of Italian. Guaranteed he's not going to do well. Guaranteed.

@@captainjosue Absolutely agree. I've seen the same concept applied to Spanish with learners alleging that they learned it in 7 days lmao. I've been learning Spanish for 2 years now, the last 6 months or so being a serious effort, and it takes tremendous time and effort to become fluent in a language. There's a reason why the terms "fluent" and "native speaker" exist. Learning how to speak a language at high level is no trivial feat

@@captainjosue Gracias, hermano. Me encanta tantísimo tu idioma pero desafortunadamente no lo hablo bastante a menudo - la mayor parte de mi práctica consiste en escuchar y leer. Principalmente veo películas con subtítulos en español y aunque me enseñan mucho, creo que es necesario hablar de vez en cuando. Yea, the 7 days notion is horsepiss and misleading. You can possibly pass a test in your target language at a very elementary level if you cram nonstop for a week, but as I said already you'll forget almost everything shortly after. In relation to Spanish, I was able to understand the gist of what was being said to me after a few weeks practice, provided that person was speaking slowly and clearly, and without complex language, mainly because English and Spanish share many cognates (my first language is Danish though, but I've spoken English fluently since a young age). But if you want to speak a language at complete fluency, it simply necessitates at least a few years intense effort. My perception of fluency is probably also higher than what most people would consider lol.

To answer your questions about how I found the top 1,000 words, it was basically just a Google search. It appears as though these lists are flawed, so you may need to do some manual translating for yourself - if you notice you use a word a lot in your native language, but don't know the translation, that's probably a good sign that you should look it up. That being said, I think we should make a more reputable source online with a proper list of the top 1,000 words in all languages. And I might your help to make that happen.
@ChrisAnthonyPinnock
@ChrisAnthonyPinnock 5 лет назад
Yeah bro, making a custom list is mostly a good idea but you should definitely get someone to review it. The catch to 100 most used words in a language is: it may not have words from another language because it doesn't exist; it's not because of usage frequency. The phrase "what's up?" is quite common but may possibly just not exist in another language. So look out for that :( One of those cases where it's more about How it is said in the culture rather than literally. But the 1000 list should definitely lead you to some of these culturally key words. Great video btw dude, you inspired me to start Spanish again years after high school haha
@michaellancaster8221
@michaellancaster8221 5 лет назад
I know this violates your rule about spending no money, but what you need is a Frequency Dictionary. It will contain the words of the language, but rather than listing them alphabetically, they’re listed in the order of how often they’re used. That will give you the most common 1,000+ words and it’s a scholarly source.
@paulaspindler

It's cool that you mentioned the 80/20 rule because it was actually found and popularized by an ITALIAN economist, Vilfredo Pareto.

6:58 "Spirare = to disappear" That made me laugh, "spirare" is the verb used to indicate the last breath before dying, technically you "disappear" after that. "SpArire" is actually "to disappear" Never thought about that similarity :P

I lived in Italy for 6 months (but I'm Dutch) I did learn all those not too useful words and sentences. What helped me to keep everything fresh was having conversations in my head when I was alone. In the shower, describing what I am planning to do, or describing what I see when I was on the go. It was so useful. This way I found sentences that I often use without needing it to build the sentence every time again. They became easy accessible packages so to say. Less mental load. Really nice!

His dad is Argentinian, let's say he already has a huge background for Italian. This being said, he is smart, has a special talent for learning languages, probably Argentinian Spanish is his mother tongue and loves it so I absolutely believe him.

@@amiquigonzales7917Argentinian Spanish is not his mother tongue, since I know from one of his videos, but he actually learnt it when was living in Argentina later in life

@@jollycomputer9748 I said "probably": all right it is not, but having an Argentinian father and besides having lived - even for a short time - in Argentina, makes a huge background for Italian. Even the rhythm of Argentinian Spanish - especially in the Buenos Aires area - is Italian, due to the massive italian immigration the country received during XIX and XX centuries. How they influenced Argentina is amazing, completely changed the face of a very Spanish society into an almost Italian one.
