Follow the development progress of my fish evolution and ecosystem simulator game Please Feed the Fish. In this cozy and relaxing simulation game about discovery and balance, feed your fish to find new varieties, explore six different fishy biomes, and manage your populations in a complex ecosystem.
This devlog will cover the progress I've made in the last two weeks of development. I dove into learning shaders with Unity's Shader Graph to take the graphics of my game to the next level and it paid off! Shaders were easier to learn than I expected (at least at a beginning level) and made a larger impact than I could have hoped for.

Looking at the end results, I feel like you could add some Post Processing / Color Correction to really make the game pop!

That's awesome! Great progress. I think the effect you did for the scales works really well. Nice job!

That looks even better now! Maybe add a bit of variety of colour/texture in smaller the rocks and Some dead leaves? I installed Unity last weekend and have started watching a LOT of tutorials. So much to learn!

Good ideas! And that’s awesome! I recommend watching a few tutorials and then diving right into making something of your own. I’d be curious to know what you’d like to make with Unity. Something along the lines of your channel content, like a physics-based game, or something different?

@@WyrmyrGames I last about 5 mins into a 2 hour tutorial and then I'm off trying to create something, couple of hours later I'm back to the tutorial!! Yes, most of those videos on my channel should be possible in Unity. So to start with it wouldn't be a working game, just getting marbles/cars/people etc from A to B. I've done marble and created a track using Landscape and sculpt, but not a finished product. Need to look into Camera controls next. Then possibly onto small games if I get the hang of it. There's a few in my niche that have moved onto Unity and Blender, I'm just cautious about the time involved in creating videos for my niche and the huge amount of other creators also doing the same. I also used to do Visuals of new houses/apartments in 3ds Max/VRay so also want to look into that. Then there's my 2 kids who have also shown an interest in Unity, Photoshop, Games, House creation in Sims etc

Absolutely fantastic work!🔥For me, the visual aspect of a game, in early stages of development is incredibly important. It helps me maintain motivation and keep working on the project. You might find it interesting to also explore PostProcessing. It's surprisingly straightforward to implement and will enhance your game's look with low effort - it supports effects like depth of field, motion blur, color adjustments, and much more, but of course, don't forget that gameplay will not implement itself😄

Thanks! I agree, improving the game’s look has been one of the most exciting weeks of development and I want to keep going! I’ll look into post-processing. Maybe there are a few more little things I can add to really make the game pop.

I want to play this game when it released and what I was thinking is like you add free camera mode so I can move the camera get close to the fishes nice job it looks much better than before
@WyrmyrGames
@WyrmyrGames 2 месяца назад
That's awesome to hear! I would love to implement a moving camera very soon. I'll be expanding the pond level a bit so the fish have more space to swim around. And especially when I start on the next stage, a moving camera will be important. I'd love to be able to zoom in and out and move around, I just need to build more terrain that looks good first!

Hi, this isn't really my type of genre of game so my suggestion might not be worth considering but I feel you might want to add a way so people feel a close attachment to the fish. If I was to play a game like this I would want to feel an attachment to my fish hoping they can grow and thrive and protect them away from danger ( I'm not sure if your gonna add negative things like sharks or something). You could give fish names or style them to look cute ( we often try to protect cute things and giving anything a name creates a connection )
@WyrmyrGames
@WyrmyrGames 2 месяца назад
That’s a good thought. I’m not sure I’ll allow the players to name each fish because at some point they could have 100 or more, if all goes to plan. I do want the players to care about taking care of their fish, by planning how to feed them and balancing their ecosystem. But I’ve been toying with the idea of a separate aquarium where you can keep fish you really like, and your idea may fit in well with that. Thanks!

Getting so much subscribers and comment's activity within only 3 weeks, considering that I can't find on web any activity of yours that redirect traffic to your channel, is amazing indeed. Maybe I'm missing something, but seems your marketing skills are much better than gamedev ones, at least for now. :)

Homie this is great!! Excellent job. What you’re learning now tends to be called “polishing”, which is so important and often underestimated amongst new developers. Heck, my degree is in game development and you taught me something today! Again, awesome job and subbed.

Thanks! That means a lot. I’m only doing what I’ve been hearing everyone tell me to do for years. It makes a lot of sense to me to get your game looking good as early as possible, if you’re going to share it with other people and gain support/interest. I should say that an important part I skipped is testing the gameplay early on. I don’t recommend skipping that but I didn’t have anyone. But maybe now that I have a small audience, I can get an initial play test up and running very soon.

@WyrmyrGames 2 месяца назад
Thanks! I learned everything so far from RU-vid. Brackeys has a really good one for water surface and caustics. I can’t remember the other ones but I just searched for what I needed and they weren’t hard to find. What was really helpful in the beginning was just watching a basic video about all the different things shaders can do to get an idea of what I actually need and then go from there.

Thank you! If I can learn them... you can! That's exactly what I tried, I just couldn't get them to work well together. I'm sure it's simple and I'll probably come back to it. I just wanted to move on for now.
@bgoldpanda7265
@bgoldpanda7265 2 месяца назад
This looks really great! You should make a day and night cycle and have the shader caustics ease in and out when it becomes night or day. Is it possible to make sunshine beam shaders?
@WyrmyrGames
@WyrmyrGames 2 месяца назад
Good idea! I don’t think that would be too hard to implement. Just move the sun around and change the colors a bit. And yes on the sun rays. I watched a tutorial on it but didn’t have time to implement it yet. It’s on the list! 🙂

Hello, Grate going. I am a Indie Game Dev. Do you know a way to get games that have made $3000 or $10000 in first year? Please let me know.
@WyrmyrGames
@WyrmyrGames 2 месяца назад
I assume you mean how to make a game that makes $3-10k in the first year? I can only repeat what I’ve heard elsewhere: Look at games that are similar to yours, using Steam Tags, and find any that have revenue in the range that you’re hoping to make. There are websites that estimate game revenue based on number of reviews. Game-stats is one. So once you’ve found games similar to yours in your revenue range, make a game that is as good or better in all areas: graphics, gameplay, features, stability. Then just as importantly, look at what those game developers did for marketing, if you can find it, and mimic it beat for beat. Did they post on social media? Did they have teasers of trailers? I hope this helps! 😅 This is the basic roadmap I’m following and there are plenty of videos on RU-vid that go a lot deeper than I can.

1:15 I do feel a need to point out that your background music is a bit loud. I know, for some reason, it's now considered impossible to listen to someone speak without music playing, but I'm in the minority(?) that are okay with no music, or very little when someone is talking. You know, so I can hear them. >_

Your better off prototyping the gameplay fast and aggressively before bothering with all the art stuff. The goal is to find out if your game idea is fun as fast as possible and either changing it or finding a new idea based on the results. As it stands im incredibly confused what this game is suppose to be
@WyrmyrGames
@WyrmyrGames Месяц назад
I’ll admit I am doing things a bit out of order for a proper development cycle. But before I posted a few videos on RU-vid I didn’t have anyone to test the game with. The main goal right now is creating a polished vertical slice and now that I have some potential play testers (if anyone is willing) I can switch gears to making sure what I have so far is solid enough to move forward with development. Thankfully the bit of art I’ve done so far didn’t take too much time and it doesn’t box me in at all on the actual gameplay design. Thanks for the suggestion. That is important to keep in mind.
