omg, this like legit made me cry! when Eli was talking to his grandma at the end and it sounded like she got emotional and called him Papito and Papa, that's love right there. Puerto Rican older moms and grannys are a hot mess of emotions for their kids and always try to make sure they are well-fed, which means over-fed LOL but that's their way of taking care of the family. Eli you did such a great job, she was so proud of you and i'm really proud to call you a fellow Boricua! now go learn some Spanish;)

I LOVE Eli and Maya bc I relate to them so much! Like I'm Puerto Rican but I'm 3rd generation so I can't speak it but grew up with the culture (both parents are puerto rican) and I always feel less than by everyone. It's nice to know I'm not alone. It's also nice to see other Latinos support 100% both Maya and Eli.

SlugoTV don't ever feel less. You are just as much Boricua like those on the island. Believe me I was born on the island, and when I came to America I used to think that way, like oh they're not Boricua enough!! But thats bullshit, thankfully I grew out of that mentality, and know that no matter where you're born, if you're BORICUA YOU'RE BORICUA!! 🇵🇷🇵🇷💞💞🌹🌹

Lol Iván was being too hard on him for not rolling his R's when pronouncing arroz. Puerto Ricans often don't pronounce the R's in words anyways! 😂 I know my abuela calls it 'ahoz' and it's adorable af.
@litawantstosing
@litawantstosing 6 лет назад
cocola chulisnaqui what ive noticed is that we roll them like there's no tomorrow when they start the word like "Rico" but we turn them into L's when they're at the end like "amor" or "estar". Of course, if we're aware about it like at a presentation or an interview, we do pronounce them correctly. It happens mostly when you're being colloquial or speaking faster than usual 😂
@CharletteG
@CharletteG 6 лет назад
cocola chulisnaqui i would disagree ppl from the Island pronounce the Rs unless they talk more urban or are raised in the USA I’m from the Island and I hardly know anyone who doesn’t pronounce their Rs
@bookish.calirican
@bookish.calirican 6 лет назад
Christine P. It could very well be a quirk within my immediate family and our social group! I'm not saying we never do, just meant to point out that we often don't pronounce it clearly in certain words.
@mariposaorofusionfoodchann7573
I noticed that while listening to Puerto Rican Salsa, that y'all don't roll your 'R's' like the Cubans, Panamanians and Dominicans do.. Just like The Canary Island Spaniards.. Sometimes it's hard to differentiate what the words mean.. for example the word Arroz becomes Arrro.. No pronunciation of the 'z'.
@xxcruiserlove26xx
@xxcruiserlove26xx 6 лет назад
yeah like instead of saying carro by rolling the r’s my family says it like ca-hoh (its not a soft sound tho). its so hard to spell out and describe idk but yeah we dont really use the r’s 😂 maybe its a Ponce thing idk 🤷🏽‍♀️

The second time I made it for potluck at work, well it was good, but I forgot the gandules!!! Lol My coworkers that never had it liked it, but I was disappointed. Be careful with the salt, you don't want to make it too salty. Read the instructions for the amount of water you need to cook the rice.

I’m third generation. Can’t speak a word of Spanish and definitely can’t roll my R’s either I relate to this so much! I never felt Puerto Rican enough. I wish I had a chance to learn to cook my grandmothers food. I was too young when she died. I’d love to be able to make my dad a great Puerto Rican meal. Soak up all you can from your grandma it’s such a gift to have her.

I was raised by my grandma so its my brain forever knowing how to cook everything puertorican but I'm still so stressed out for him. I was hyper ventilating and shit 😂😂

“Waking up to the sound of chickens” ! I’ve never lived in PR but my moms family does and when I would visit them I experienced the same thing! The first time I took my husband to visit I warned him that there are lots of chickens (and dogs) that roam free. When he saw it for himself he literally couldn’t process it because it’s not the norm in the states lol gotta love the Puerto Rico lifestyle.

If you have a good recipe and you are capeable of and have the patience to follow the precise steps, then your food is going to be great! I don't understand people's fear of cooking. You did great, Eli! I hope you get the chance to make it with your grandma.

Not latinx but the first time I smoked a pig for my family (with generous help from my grandfather and father) and they liked it was one of the best moments of my life. Being able to do something that is so deeply ingrained in my culture and in my family is one of the things I'm most proud of, so I think I can understand how Eli feels. Great job!

First off your grandma made me tear up at the end. Second I’m so proud, arroz con gandules is no easy feat when you don’t have a person physically there helping you. Congrats I’m sure your abuela is so proud of you right now. Nothing makes them happier than sharing their recipes.

I've only been to Puerto Rico twice in my life but I did love the food and the music and the people. Everyone was so friendly and they helped me with my Spanish. I feel sad about the trouble they have had in the last year.

I almost wanted to start crying right at the beginning when he said that his grandma had MS. It is such an awful disease and it’s amazing that your grandma was able to have children and then grandchildren before it was even diagnosed. I was an ice skater until the age of 18 and my coach had MS and it meant that she couldn’t have children or she would have ended up in a wheelchair, even though she would have been an amazing mum. Because of this she kind of became a second mum to her skaters, especially me because our families were so close

I’m a first generation immigrant but I can’t speak Spanish well anymore. I can understand it fully but I suffered from untreated low oxygen levels for long enough that my brain can no longer make the English to Spanish translation verbally. I feel like I’ve lost my “Latina” card because of it but watching you guys makes my heart happy. You are all accepting of each other no matter what language you can speak or can’t speak. I wish I could connect with other Latinos and Latinas the way you guys connect.

Eli your arroz looked very puertorrican!!! I am one and I live in the island... So proud of you!!!, one trick for next time... Measure your rice and use the same amount of water. after the water starts boiling and has started to dry, you lower your heat and cover the pot and let it do it's magic. 10 minutes later, you uncover and "menealo" with a spoon check the rice for doneness and if it's not done cover it for some more minutes... If you want a pastel taste just cover with plantain leaves and then the lid.

I’m 3rd generation Puerto Rican in Hawaii and I didn’t grow up with Spanish although I am learning but I’ve always had my grandma’s arroz con gandules, “Hunto” rice, too me she makes the best and always for a party it’s the staple dish, when cousins come over they say “Did aunty make hunto” and they are elated to hear that she did.

She’ll be gone 9 yrs in November and it’s like her love made the food that much more special. Can’t replicate that!
