As a college freshman, there’s still a lot of anxieties and worries that I have in regards to my career. I hope I can learn from my mistakes and pursue something truly fulfilling. Seeing you chase your dreams is so inspiring to me. Keep it up, John!
The “I‘ve spent most of my life just chasing shiny things“ resonated with me. I know you are not directly trying but provide a lot of guidance with your videos. Please, never stop. Good luck!
Honestly John what you’re doing right now legitimately feels like the right way ahead. Like you’re in a spot where you’re no longer confused but rather curious about what your shortcomings have been and more sort of why you couldn’t solve them on your own. The mentorship method would help you understand that exactly without having to undergo all the mental turmoil. In a nutshell, good decision!
Graduated two years ago, worked for about a year, then now trying to build something myself but feeling extremely lost and left behind. I am tearing up watching this. It's like I just had a great conversation with a friend and it worked! Thanks, John! And good luck out there...
same here, I graduated two years ago I only worked 3-4 months on a contract project then after that I wanted to start my own company but I am kinda struggling to make things work and some of my former classmates think I'm doing it wrong ofc they r employed to someone's company but I don't think I belong to work for someone's company. I just want to make my dream come true. good luck to everyone who is chasing their dreams.
John, you've solved most of my problems through this channel. I was on the verge of giving up on my Computer science degree as a freshman and then I discovered 'A Day in Life of a Harvard Computer Science Student'. When I hit some dead ends on how to start a tech startup this video popped up. Keep pushing on creating more videos. Absolutely educative and full of insights. Can't wait to see the books you have been reading so far.
You’re such an intelligent person and not just smart. I always think it’s so fascinating how well you’re able to self-analyse and create a plan to change the things you see as faults. I love seeing you develop and grow because it inspires me to do so as well.
Just remember John…happiness is not a destination. Enjoy all of your time grinding and then relaxing and then grinding again. You always pump me up to be a better person. Keep it up :-)
John- I’ve been watching you since high school and I also just graduated college. This video was like catching up with an old friend and it’s been amazing to see you grow over the years. So happy for you finding a deeper calling after graduating and excited to see where post grad life takes you! Surely great places!!
I find myself asking the same questions, John. Especially after graduating, I’ve found that chasing the shiny things have pulled me far away from the things that sustain me as a human being. This video came at the right time for me, thank you for being so open and honest about your experience. Have the best time in LA!
I would be interested in a video dedicated specifically about your opinion on what a “balanced” life could/should look like. Balance seems to be everyone’s goal, but I’m not sure I’ve met anyone who has achieved it. Is it more of an “ebb and flow” situation? Does it just mean not being consumed by one or more areas in life? Great video as always!
balance is a way of life, it is the way. It is not something you "Achieve." You're not supposed to look at it like a goal to achieve because that way you're already not honoring the sustainability that balance is about. Overtime, as you prioritize each aspect of your life that is important to you and your health, you will feel more balanced.
Wow, it’s really amazing to see you boldly make a pivotal decision like this with such introspection. Been following you for sometime, and I’ve always been so inspired by your hunger for growth in all areas of your life. Proud of you, & I’m truly wishing you all the best!
Your older videos that you claimed to be “not that good” are the reason I found and subscribed to your channel in the first place. I loved seeing what another Canadian high schooler was doing on an average day, and I loved how you took mundane moments and made them beautiful and interesting. Congrats on the move!
I am in my early thirties but listening to you inspires me to keep pushing toward my goals and expanding my thinking. All the best in your new venture.
Fact that you fully recognise your issues and talk about improving is really vulnerable and inspiring at the same. So happy to finally get an update video. Sending you lots of love and hope you keep growing 💗
Super excited for you! Just be sure that you're not getting taken advantage of (you're very smart so I'm sure you'd see it) but I followed a friend who I looked up to, helped her with an organization she started, and ultimately most of what I thought she'd had figured out was her "front," she didn't care so much to mentor me as get my eager and excited help, and I didn't learn that much because once I got a look under the hood there was nothing about her I wanted to emulate. Not saying this is you. Or your situation. Saying, keep an eye out because I didn't. But I truly believe it all happens for a reason and it's impossible that this wasn't the right move because even if it doesn't work out (worst case) the end will position you for the next beginning that was meant for you! Can't go wrong honestly ❤
Love the growth and realizations you've shared over the last few years! It's been great following your journey and learning about your perspective. Wishing you the best success with this new chapter in your life!
I could type an entire paragraph commenting the video or comparing it with my situation. You're that kind of person that can teach you something that will change you're entire mindset/life, while we're drinking a coffee. But let's say only, thank you for share your experience, your thoughts, and your way. Break it John, I'm excited to see in what do you become 💪🏻
thanks for sharing! love hearing about people moving in the direction of purpose and development instead of just doing what we have the potential to do cause we have the potential to do alot of things but that may not necessarily make us happy. I loved how you called it chasing shiny things, so true!
So proud of you for this. Takes a lot of wisdom and self reflection to make decisions that benefit you as a person long term. Congrats on not just chasing the shiny things and realizing what’s important to you! Taking inspiration from this!
Congratulations John! Welcome to California! And yes, Santa Monica is really nice! We’re kind of neighbors. 300 miles away. Haha… I live in the Bay Area. I moved here 36 years ago from NJ and never looked back! Good Luck & have fun!
thanks for bringing us up to speed. I watched (like many) your RU-vid channel because of reading.. your thoughts and suggestions on books.. and i must admit i loved it.. 100%. I do miss that.. and yes.. that is a selfish miss.. but.. i do hope you return.. simple.. shorter versions.. would work.. Good luck moving forward.. i too love Santa Monica.. and most important .. remember this moment.. sitting on the floor.. of an empty apartment.. it will mean a lot 50 years from now..
Yo, I can hear your Californian accent already and it's awesome. Our state has problems, but also wonderful things about it. You're already blending in very well, man. Welcome to the Golden State, dude! Learning from others and mentorships have been underrated and under-appreciated for too long. Glad you're finding a path that sounds best for you!
Hey john. I don’t usually comment but felt the need to share. I am also graduating college this year and have been experiencing what society says we should do, which is “chase the shiny thing”. Where’s the fulfillment in that? I no longer feel drawn to that and have clarity on pursuing interests and jobs that make me wake up with a smile on my face excited to see what the day brings. I am happy you’re pursuing things that align with your purpose and goals and I will be that you will be a lot happier and a lot more “successful” as well. The world is your oyster!!
running a business is SO hard. Theres so much more to paying the bills and selling the product, theres a suprising amount strategic thinking and trying to not get corrupt by the money and power. Small to mid size businesses are something else
Hey John I think you are really brave. I became a college drop out year ago,and I ve been working year and half already,Honestly I miss the time in College and did feeling a sense of frustration around and I hope one day I could go back to college and finish it.
Here you are, with a booming youtube channel almost hitting 1 million subs and you just decided to leave it for a while (as well as the wall street thing and starting your own start-up) and not upload a video in 4 months, having decided to live a life that makes you happier than just having shiny things. A very mature decision, it actually inspires me. Good for you John! :)
good luck john at CreatorNow john :) i know this is super random to mention linkedin here, but its crazy to think about how behind every person you encounter on there, there's a story behind why they went to school X, pursued role Y at company Z, and so on and so forth. everyone probably has had these inflexion points in their lives where they decide "you know what? im going for this", putting their eggs all in one basket, without really knowing what the future holds for them.
Thank you John. I'm partially facing similar situation. I guess in my case I just got used to my misery so much, that I cannot even allow myself to chase hapiness. Or at least try. Please update us on your journey. Big love.
I recently got a great paying job in my ideal career field for the degree I'm about to get, but then I also took some time to think about it more and realized that I am not happy in this career field and it's not hitting the spot for me working in this job. So I decided to go back to school and just go all out on my dream that I told myself for years I wasn't smart enough, financially stable, too risky, etc. Granted I'm in a different scenario financially, emotionally, and personally not that has allowed me to make this decision, but I feel confident in it. Anyways I think this is great that you made this decision John! When you believe in something and you're truly passionate in it, people see that and will naturally follow or appreciate it a lot more
I moved to western Europe to study, and one of the biggest lessons I learned from my new "home" (also realized there is no place that I can just move in and feel it like it is truly home anymore, "home" is more like something you establish rather than a physical place... such thing when being born most of us get for granted, but our parents actually work very hard to create it)... the thing I learnt is to not be mentally attached to my belongings, if I put a sentimental value to every single thing, then the weight pins me down, so just like in Fight club, when you get free from the weight, you are free to do anything i.e. move anywhere, live in the other part of the world and not be bothered at all... nice video, it's good to hear an update from you, I've been following your journey for like a year now
Just started my bachelor in CS over here in Norway! Thanks for taking us with you on your journey through life and sharing your perspectives along the way, its been real :) Anyways, best wishes with your search for balance and fulfilment in the future, as you've encouraged all of us observers
That’s actually an interesting point of view. I also believe I’m an entrepreneur deep down but I’m too risk adverse to start something on my own. So I’m following the second strategy; joined a very early company and now have considerable impact on all decisions. But that’s my game plan. Experience what is needed to get a company from nothing to successful while working along someone’s who has built a successful company before
I just started grad school this year in an MBA program. I still work full time and do sports. I thought I could balance that with dating but it was too much. I'm working on how to continue my fun activities without giving up school.
I’d love more content like this. Feel like me and a lot of others are in a similar predicament as you were in and its refreshing to see your unfiltered thoughts on it.
Amazing video! Just happened to me that I had to reject a job offer that required me to move to London. I figure out that I was gonna accept it just because it looked great on my CV, despite being in a bad situation myself and knowing this decision would make me miserable. Your video made me feel better :)
Wow! :) New turn, and definitely looking forward to. Saw some of the first-year CS videos, remember that very interesting trains of thought. Keep it up!
Following you for long time gonna start my college in a week and watching this i just know what i have to chase in these year and how to approach it ... 😊
Sounds like the right move pursuing mentorship. If you’re interested in entrepreneurial content Alex Hormozi’s extremely candid about his failures and what he’s learned. His vid “Broke and Almost dead to $100 million … how I did it” is super insightful and he gets into how he hit rock bottom with his DUI
I absolutely love this video and would really like to talk with you! I am 21, currently living in Miami and trying to develop a financial technology business. I believe I have an idea that can really change the entirety of what we know as peer to peer lending and individual financial management. I am considering relocating to the LA area perhaps since there is a much larger talent pool, far more investors. Beyond this I believe LA is the creative space I am really looking for and where I can truly develop something big.
As someone once in a similar position who also came from a very prestigious school with a lot of pressure to prove myself as soon as possible… You have a lot of ego to kill. It seems like you’re on the right path.
Amazing video John! One of the best I've watched on your channel. Why? Vulnerability! It's good to hear creators saying what they really think! You & Zack will be an awesome feat! Creator now has lots of potential and I can't wait to see you succeed in this new adventure!
His so amazing. Fkn so incredible to see how honest and open he has become to himself and his audience. I'm so inspired by this video, It could not have come at a time I also feel more confident to follow my dreams and provide / create value to others.
Hey John I just ran into you in DT Santa Monica! You walked pass me from like 3 meters away and I was pretty shocked that I ran into you here😃 Regretting a little bit for not saying hi to you, but welcome to LA! Hopefully I'll run into you in SM again and i'll def say hi next time haha
I think this is the most arrogant I’ve seen you. Welcome to LA, but don’t let it go to your head. Watching your videos over the past 5 years while I was in college, I always admired your humility given your successes. I’d hate to see you change
the video didn't really addres why you moved to LA though. Any reason why you chose a place that isn't necessarily known for being authentic to yourself nor for "not chasing shiny things" if that's what you say you're after? Did you have a plan at all for what you'd be doing here?
Right. Aside from the points you mention, some former residents and visitors also mention it’s one of the STD capitals of the world, among other creepy things.
Hey John! You mentioned in your video that you started your own company and it generated profit. However, I remember you were Canadian and technically and international student in US. I was wondering how were you able to do it legally? Or am I missing something?
Always love an update from my friend john fish, much love to you from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦😊 Thank you for inspiring me to be happy 😊love you brother! What a pleasant birthday surprise 🎉 Best birthday ever, bless you always ❤
i feel like there are a million videos on youtube with the same title of this video lol 😂 but either way i’m happy for you and hope u find what ur looking for!
soo much love from Pakistan for you :) , btw your style of talking is changed , i think its bcs of living in america as you said 'YO' . i am watching your videos for about four years more or less. wish we could meet someday in life
I love that I haven’t watched you in months and when I finally check in, I see you moved to LA! I’m also moving to LA oct 1st and thought the timing here was funny lol.
