Hello Travis, gonna try a small plot of corn to refresh my seed stock this year. I have a yellow dent variety that's been in my freezer for about 15 years. I got it back then from a fellow I worked with who got it from his uncle who had been growing it for years to feed hogs. I know it sounds crazy after 15 years but my home germination test came up 90%. Wish me luck.

If kept in the freezer, corn usually holds its germ rate pretty well. 90% after 15 years is impressive though!

I'm growing Trinity, Sugar Buns, and Sugar Baby, all SE varieties with a maturity date of 70 days or less. Because I'm 150 miles south of you I can usually plant corn February 15th. I intend to save seed from the first 4 ears that silked. The goal is to have all the sweetcorn out before the summer rains start and the army worms eat it all.

@@LazyDogFarm I guess it's different as far north as Moultrie. On the peninsula it will rain almost every day from the middle of June until the middle of August.

You really love sweet corn, nice treatise on it. Lumping everything under field corn: flour corn, parching corn, dent corn, flint corn. Mexican farmers have a huge variety of differing ratios of flour to flint in their kernels to provide various levels of toothyness for different varieties of tortillas for different recipes or cooking method's and there is a flour variety that with the least pressure in the teeth of a mill will explode into the finest flour you've seen and can be used to bake cakes. The focus here in the US is all on sweet corn but outside the focus is on the flour corns. Its really hard to find proper flour corn varieties here, almost all are phenotypically dent corn in catalogs here. I was thinking of importing some varieties from Mexico to gain access to better varietal selections.

I use my DJI drone to pollinate my corn. Fly about 8”-12” over my sweet corn. Prop wash blows straight down in a yellow whirlwind.

I almost planted my corn this past Sunday, and I am glad I didn't. We had about 6" of rain last night here in Missouri, and if I had planted it, I'm pretty sure it would have washed away. I'm planting My Fair Lady sweet corn this year and I am looking forward to it.

Tried a packet of Golden Bantam sweet corn from seeds of change surprised all germinated in trays first then transplanted with a few leaves, now corn is at over 2ft tall, my first year trying corn🌽.

Would love to try some glass gem! I’m here in 10a and my peaches and cream is already tasseled and silked and should be ready to harvest in a couple of weeks. We did honey select last year and it did really well. I have a 25X40 bed and 13-4x4 raised beds. Your videos have improved my gardening immensely! Keep up the great videos! Thanks.

I use the same drip tape from Drip Depot last year, left it all out over the winter here in NY, Zone 7a.Of course I drained and blew out the lines, and this spring I don't have any leaks at all. Good stuff !

I enjoyed the vid on corn Travis. In my garden this year I’ve got Delectable sweet corn up in one bed. In another week or so I’ll plant Painted Mountain flour corn and 3-4 weeks after that some Silver Queen. You didn’t mention that there are about 4 kinds of field corn; flint corn which has real hard kernels, dent corn a little softer, gourdseed corn, and flour corn which has the softest kernels. I used to grow gourdseed corn because the kernels com off the cob easier and it made good cornmeal. But my mill died so the last few years I grow flour corn which mills nicely in my Nutribullet blender with the little flat blades. Love that good home grown corn bread with beans or hoe cakes with my eggs…🙂. Keep these great videos coming.

Sure wish someone would resurrect Merit Sweet Corn. That is what we always grew. Wonderful taste and so easy to shuck and clean. Last I heard they lost the crop and couldn't reproduce it. Travis, do you know anything about that variety?

It's been quite a while since I saw you use the seeder. You must not be popping enough of that corn to have that much left over. 😀 I'm growing Yellowstone this year. Started some in a cell tray to get a jump start on the season. When that goes in, I will direct seed the 2nd succession. (the 3rd goes in 15 days after the 2nd) I can't dedicate the kind of space to corn that you can, so my corn gets hand pollinated.

We eat popcorn about 3-4 times a week. But it only takes a spoonful or so to make a big bowl, so we're slowly chipping away at it.

I frequently drive through the Rio Grande Valley, in Texas, so I get to watch some of the commercial farms progress through various crops. Most of the fields near the border, around McAllen are planted with commercial drip irrigation, rather than pivots. They do a LOT of crop rotation there, not mono-crop. Recently, lots of those fields have been planted in corn. My guess for there is that it's some variety of sweet corn. Most of the fields are planted in standard single rows, but one field is planted in double rows. Same spacing between plants, and about the same spacing between the raised irrigation berms, but double-row planted. I'll try to watch how the singles and doubles progress when I can get down there. What do you think about double rows for corn on a home garden scale? Better pollination? Better wind resistance, with tighter stalks? Obviously more stalks per acre, but wonder what effect on ears per acre or size of ears?

I've seen photos of it being done on a backyard garden scale, but I've never tried it. Seems like it works well as long as you give 3' or so between the double rows. One time I planted corn rows on a 2' spacing and got very poor pollination. My guess was that the the foliage was so thick, that the pollen couldn't fall from the top to the ears.

I planted some Glass Gem corn this year and I'm not too sure I like how it is growing compared to my other heirloom corns I have been growing for years . I have never seen corn put on so many tillers before like the Glass Gem is doing . Being a Hoosier I have seen and grown a lot of corn in my life lol . Thanks for sharing !

Good overview on corn genetics. I'm growing a block of Painted Mountain, another multi-colored landrace selection using breeder Dave Christensen's original genetic mix. Short, Tonka tough, and with better nutrient profile than others. Also, easier to grind than Jimmy Red which I grew last year.

Thanks for sharing this "real world" corn growing. Had the same situation this year - maybe a bit too much rain and a wet spot or two. Replanted the holes then, two weeks later, made the mistake of hilling the rows without regard to plant height. I thought the shorter plants would continue pushing up through the soil - not considering the seeds had burned up their energy with the first sprouting. Planted some small areas a third time and will be more careful when hilling. With 6, 30-ft rows, we will have enough to share with friends and put some in the freezer. Then there is the summer / fall crop.

We usually don't freeze okree, we just enjoy it while we have it. We do freeze our creamed corn, peas, and butterbeans. We'll be sure to try and show that process as we do it.

Last two years I grew Ambrosia. We really liked it and I still have several bags in the freezer. This year we are trying Inferno Hybrid. I have 5 55 foot rows at 12 inch spacing and rows are 3 foot apart. It’s almost knee high. I started all the seed in 100 count cells and transplanted them deep when they were about 10 inches tall. A lot of work but they don’t blow over that way.

Following your previous success, I decided on Yellowstone for this season. I'm pretty small scale, and in containers, so I'll do hand pollinating. Along side the corn I have Delicata squash to shade the containers, and Fort Hood lima beans to climb the corn stalks. Kinda a "three sisters" planting.

Hey bud. Enjoyed this video. I'm growing a Bantam sweet corn in WV zone 6b. Just pre-germinated mine and planted them this morning. I don't have quite the corn plot you do so I can pre-germinate and then go put them out but that won't always be the case. The glass gem would probably be great up here in the summer and I bet my chicken would love it as good scratch in the fall.

So enjoyed this video! I have a small backyard garden so haven’t thought I could grow corn because it takes a lot of room. Thanks for All the corn growing information. I had no idea how much there is to know about that. I will be doing research to see if I can grow a small area of corn. Also thanks for the drip tape information. We are still too cold to plant warm weather corps. Your gardens look wonderful. 👍🏻🌺

We would love to try some of your Glass Gem! This spring we have Astronomy Domine mix and we are planning a fall crop of Catalyst, Sh2. A hybrid bicolor from Johnny's. I would love to grow this with the Glass Gem!

I went with the 15 mil Rivulis from Berry Hill Drip Irrigation (per your reccomendation). Had to buy a 4,000ft roll so I'll have it for a while. I also got some of their screw on row ends. I have been extremely happy with it so far. Not a single major leak or geyser yet. And I had them every time I watered with the old stuff from the kit.

Rivulis is good tape too. And the 15 mil should last you quite a few seasons.

Thanks for that! I have grown some of the Gourmet Super Sweets available from stokes. There are lots of different varieties to suite different conditions and colours. They are a true Sh2 but they are a breeding breakthrough, they have more glucose instead of just fructose like other Sh2s. They also have very tender pericarps so they are incredibly tender. All other sweet corn pales by comparison! Klaus

Those are all bred by a company called Illinois Foundation Seeds (www.ifsi.com/sweet-corn/products/fresh-market). I've heard really good things about their varieties, but have never tried them.

It's been my experience that the shorter younger stalks whether they catch up on size or not, will tassel about the same time that the older more mature stalks do...I walk up and down the rows shaking/ bumping the stalks, just for good measure...I have Incredible sweet corn & some jumbo corn ( he bought it years ago,& doesn't know the name) i got from a farmer friend... .I like my drip depots dripline . It worked well last year!

After a couple of years of poor germination with direct sow that this year I started in the 162 cell trays. I planted 5 35 ft rows. Would be harder if I tried to plant more.

Really enjoying the videos. I'm looking forward to growing Yellowstone, once I get my grass killed off and our clay, which is about 1/2 an inch under the grass amended. Just got in our double wheel hoe and attachments Going to broad fork in some biochar we made and some gypsum too, then use the cultivator tines to work in a few trailer loads of compost. I'm also killing off a 25 x 70 plot (with weed block) for Dent Corn this late summer/fall. Thanks for all the vids.

I've been growing Trinity sweet corn for the past 3 years, it's the only sweet corn I've found that ripens in my area and tastes good. I'm going to try Painted Mountain this year, I don't know if dry corn will ripen before frost around here, but the only way to find out is to grow some. Hopefully home grown corn flour is in my future.

Hi Travis! Have a random drip tape question for you I can't find an answer on...The way my my garden is set up this year, I have some rows that are 10-15' long, some 20-25' long. Can I run different lengths of drip tape off the main line for the different row lengths, or will that cause an issue with water distribution? Thanks so much! My hubby and I LOVE your videos!

You can grow bush beans with your corn for nitrogen

My understanding is that the nitrogen produced by the beans will not be available to a crop that is grown simultaneously with it. The nitrogen fixed by the beans isn't available to the soil until those bean roots are tilled into the soil and the nitrogen stored in the bean root nodules is released.

@@LazyDogFarm There is a term I can't think off where in the theory companion planting where if you plants crops close enough together their roots grow together and the feed off each other's rot bases so for example tomato grown close with basil the tomato takes up the basil chemicals which deters hornworms and improves tomato flavour, similar the theory with corn and beans grown close together the roots will join and the corn will feed off the nitrogen in the legume root nodes whilst it's still alive you won't get and beans but you will get better corn that's the theory anyway

Im in Mo. I have always planted Incredible. We love the flavor of it. Not in the ground yet due to about 4 inches of rain for the last week. Next week is looking a lot better so hope to get it in. When should you start spraying for worms on sweet corn, when you see silks first appear or later than that?? Love all your videos.

I would definitely start spraying as soon as silks appear. But if you start seeing damage on the plants before silks appear, go ahead and start spraying then.

I have never grown corn and I'm fairly new to gardening but that glass corn looks beautiful. I would not mind growing about 10 stalks. What all can it be used for is it an edible or would it have to be ground up to be used?

It is edible. It's technically considered a popcorn, but could be ground as well for corn meal.

Wow, I learned a lot about sweet corn. If I understood that right, all corn would be true to type as long as there isnt any cross pollination from another type? Basically, sweet corn is like an heirloom so to speak?

Not quite. My explanation was a bit of a simplification. There are other traits than just the sweetness traits I discussed. Some of the older varieties are heirlooms, but most of the supersweet varieties are going to be hybrids.

Perfect timing on the video. I just bought corn seeds yesterday, plan on planting tomorrow. I planted peaches and cream about a month ago and got bad germination. My question is this... how much water should you put down for seeds to germinate? I have a feeling that maybe I over watered my first attempt. Also the corn I bought yesterday is called incredible. Any info on that variety as far as taste?

I like to keep the soil moist for the first few days after planting. I ran the drip tape overnight after planting and then ran it yesterday for about 3 hours.

You don't have to store it in the freezer. You could probably get away with just an airtight container in the pantry. But the freezer seems to work very well for us.

Travis, question about a drip tape issue my husband and I ran into today! After seeing you on the Hoss channel for years talking about drip tape, we finally bought a drip irrigation kit from Hoss last month, got it all installed last week, and have used it just 3 times. Well, when we turned it on today to water, we found we have MAJOR leaks in SIX of our 10 rows of drip tape; and all the leaks are right at the emitter sites, like they "blew out". The tape is buried, and we set it up just like you showed in the MANY Hoss & Lazy Dog Farm videos we watched before installing, lol! Any idea what happened? Could the pressure regulator not be working, in turn causing the tape to basically blow out at the emitter sites? We're pretty frustrated after spending the money and time to install a drip irrigation system to find we have leaks already...My hubby's ready to go back to soaker hoses, LOL! We'll probably grab a roll of the P1 drip tape you talk about in this video, but I noticed on Drip Depot's page for the P1 drip tape it lists different emitter flow rates in GPH, (from .17 GPH to .52 GPH) which I assume depends on the tape thickness & emitter spacing. Will all of these emitter flow outputs work with the filter regulator we got from Hoss, or should we look for a particular GPH rate? Thanks so much Travis! If you're getting leaks that fast, it could be that your flow rate is too high for that system. If your flow rate is over 8 gal/min at the spigot, then that nullifies the pressure regulator like it isn't even there. If that's the case, you'd want to replace your current pressure regulator with something like this that can handle up to 20 gal/min: www.dripdepot.com/item/senninger-pressure-master-three-quarter-inch-fpt-regulator-medium-flow-psi-10-psi As far as the P1 drip tape goes, we use the 8 mil with 12" emitter spacing and 0.25 gph output and like it very much. It works with all the fittings and pieces you already have.
