My dad had a doctorate in music from the 40’s and 50’s having his own jazz band and wrote many tunes & songs. He loved to sing. Dad could play any instrument and taught music . He really disliked my era of music from the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s rock n roll. Except for the Beatles. They changed my dad’s musical career and his perception of talent. It was no longer just “noise” to him. The Beatles, unknowingly, were pivotal in bringing forth a new form of musical genius. The world has never been the same since. John, George, Paul and Ringo, thank you.

There’s no separating or qualitatively judging the “Abbey Road” songs versus each other - they’re all essential brushstrokes in the masterpiece. There’s no dreamy “Because” without the music hall goofiness of “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” contrasting with it, or the entire side 2 medley that “Because” sets up. The Beatles built an entire journey and all its stations for us to navigate, and balanced each hill and overlook for our ultimate joy. It is the very peak of what music can do.

I think the more Beatles songs you know, the more favourites you have; a favourite for when you're sad, when you're happy, when life is crazy.... basically, for the different moods and circumstances of life. If you can even narrow your favourite Beatles songs down to "favourite era" or "favourite year" you're doing well! Glad you're enjoying this fab journey and letting it change your life 🎶💕

You really should have continued to listen through to the next track; it's a clean segue into You Never Give Me Your Money! My Beatles journey started when I was 8 years old in 1963 and my older sisters brought their music into the house. That summer I was auditioned for choir in my Catholic grade school and had the blessing of good vocal training at a young age. I'm 69 and have been a musician and vocalist ever since and have never been in a band that didn't play Beatles music.

Fun and moving for me to see her react: the fact that so many years has passed made it possible for people to hear this music newly, whereas 20-30 years earlier everyone would have been exposed to all the Beatles repertoire on the radio, in stores, in elevators...many people maybe heard it as background music, instead of really listening intently to it as we did when it first came out, and as she is doing today. Her reaction brings back mine emotionally, when I heard it all those years ago, so it re-awakens that fresh new spirit in me too! Really cool.

Side two of Abbey Road has to be listened to from beginning to end as one piece (it’s a medley after Here Comes the Sun and Because…wait a couple of seconds at the end so you hear the actual final song which is called “Her Majesty”. It wasn’t supposed to be included but ultimately it was left on… it’s become part of Beatles lore. Also don’t forget about “I want you” which ends side one (this is famously how the vinyl album was divided). I enjoyed your reaction…amazing song. I’ve always liked Maxwells Silver Hammer btw, whimsical dark humor…well produced. Like others have said I heard this album as a kid and I thought M.S.H was hilarious.

No! Incorrect. I was pretty sure this was actually a John song, which as per their agreement was credited to Lennon/McCartney. Just checked my copy of Abbey Road (bought on the day of release) and I'm right. There are only five songs credited to all four Beatles. They are: Flying, Dig It, Christmas Time is Here Again, and the Beatles versions of, Free as a Bird and Now and Then (but not Real Love as they didn't add anything to that one).

Impossible to pick a favourite Beatles song - it depends on my mood! I would say that probably more often than not I would go for a track from the (variable in quality) White Album of 1968 - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - it's another one by George Harrison. Please start on a Pink Floyd journey when you can, there are a couple of duff albums in there (in my opinion!) when they were feeling their way after the loss of their original main songwriter Syd Barrett, but the albums from 1971 (from "Echoes" in the Meddle album through to The Wall of 1979) are (again in my opinion!) great. I envy you listening to all this music for the first time!

Yep, Maxwell Silver Hammer is not one of The Beatles tracks you'd think of as recommending as amongst their best. When I was growing up with them in the '60s you didn't tend to have a favourite track, there were just so many, you just got so used to them releasing a banger each time, you just took it for granted and simply loved them all. I'd still find it difficult to choose one, however, their message of LOVE got stronger in the 2nd half of the '60s which was a major plus.
