GINGER ROGERS. My absolute favourite. I get excited about a lot of Old Hollywood actors and actresses and call them "my favourite"- but Ginger Rogers is, undoubtedly, my favourite actress of all-time. I wish I could articulate all that she means to me, but honestly I don't think I could do her justice, such is the admiration and love I have for her. Hopefully this video does the talking for me. I will say though that Ginger really could do it all. Comedy, drama, musicals, film noir...she was great in any and all roles and genres. There was no one quite like her and there never will be again. She was an incredibly special woman and I hope I captured all that she was and the energy she brought to every single performance.
I actually clipped a total of 47 Ginger films for this video, but only 41 made the final cut. I would love to make another Ginger Rogers video down the road (one that features all 47 of those films)- but for now this is what you're stuck with lol. The clipping process for this video was more intense than any other video I've ever done. 47 FILMS!!!! It probably took me (AT LEAST) an hour for each film...THAT'S A LOT OF WORK!!!! Hopefully it was worth it. I'm not entirely sure that it was. I held myself to such a high standard with this video, so I'm not entirely happy with the outcome. I just wanted to create something worthy of her talent and hopefully I've succeeded in doing so. We'll see...
For my actor and actress tributes, I like to provide a few film recommendations in case you feel inspired to go out and watch a few of their films! Ginger is best remembered today for her partnership with Fred Astaire and, while I adore her solo work, the Astaire/Rogers musicals are where I'd start if I was introducing someone to Ginger. This also happens to be how I first discovered Ginger! My favourite Astaire/Rogers musicals (in chronological order) are "The Gay Divorcee" (1934), "Roberta" (1934), "Top Hat" (1935) and "Swing Time" (1936). To be honest though, they are all great films and you really can't go wrong. As for Ginger's solo films, my favourites are (again in chronological order) Stage Door (1937), Vivacious Lady (1938), Bachelor Mother (1939), Kitty Foyle (1940), Lucky Partners (1940), The Major and the Minor (1942), I'll Be Seeing You (1944) and Monkey Business (1952). I also love the two Busby Berkeley films she made (though Ginger only has a minor role in both of these films)- 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933). I realise I practically recommended all 47 films but she has so many wonderful films!

I've watched this many times this morning and I'm still mesmerised. You always have the magic touch when it comes to actor/actress tributes, and this one is really the perfect example. So carefully crafted and perfectly executed. Ginger has such a spark about her and there's a real sense of energy and vitality, perfectly balanced with a sensitivity and vulnerability. She could convey so much with just one look and her comedic timing was second to none! And I must say, you really know the source material so well (47+ hours is epic - props for that!) Each time I watch, I keep noticing more subtle movements, gestures and expressions that really compliment her versatility as an actress and accentuate the lyrics and every little nuance of the music. Thanks for the recommendations - I will have to watch "Lucky Partners" as I don't think I've seen it before. "Stage Door" and "The Gay Divorcee" are also two of my absolute favs! :)

Out of so many favorite scenes of her, when she first faces off with Katherine Hepburn in their room in "Stage Door", her look of both wariness and yet determined to strike out is just so perfect... she is SO underrated as a great actress. This scene is in this video at 0:23.

Gasp! I honestly...I'm so blown away, I'll watch this right over again right after this comment. I never knew I loved Ginger THIS much and I never knew I could love a contemporary song so well. I'm still in tears, in a very odd kind of tears between bursting joy and ripping grief. Oh my God... You did the most amazing job and I can't thank you enough for taking the passages with Fred for the ethereal, divine parts in between. That transported the deep loving affection and special bond they had so openly into my heart. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I'm thoroughly blown away!

Just watched it AGAIN, but this is the first time I have read your comments. Before reading it, I had wanted to say you must love Ginger like I do, because you caught the total essence of all the best. I can recognize maybe 85% of the clips. After reading, yes, you do love her like I do. You said your words could not do her justice. Perhaps, but your video surely does. You can't mess with perfection, and this video is perfect. She was amazing. I saw an nightline interview of Ginger the night of Fred's passing, and the host says when he watched Fred and her dance, all he saw was her... .I am the same way, she has me mesmerized. Someone else said she was the girl next door, but more.... couldn't say it better.

This might reveal my innocence, but I was totally unaware that Ginger Rogers did this much acting. I'm so glad you placed your emphasis on what she isn't remembered for as much as her soft deft moves on a dance floor, her hand elegantly placed upon the sleeve of Fred Astaire. Were you, are you, a dancer, as well? Your sense of timing and respect for the art would suggest you might be, might have been.

As a surprise to myself, after watching her recently again and again, I began to appreciate her as a person more. From the Ballroom dance point of view, I didn't realized that I was comparing her dancing to a contemporary champions, which was not to her advantage. That was not fair. She was gone in 1995 and Ballroom dance went ahead. Fred also would look not competitive on the dance floor today. They were not competitive Ballroom dancers. That's why.

It's amazing you managed to make it look so flawless when going through those clips & selecting from them must have been a nightmare but you really took the time and effort to pick the right ones to showcase her and it really paid off :) Such a great tribute, it showcases everything that makes Ginger so wonderful, and the song was the perfect mix of calm and upbeat that I think has a really appropriate message for her & her characters. SOMEDAY the San Andreas fault will eventually slip and H'wood (or what's left of it) will drift north on what then will be an island into the Pacific, as will Oakwood Memorial Park, where Fred and Ginger (or what's left of them) are interred. By that time we all will be gone, our offspring won't be around to remember us either. And who knows if there'll be amenable audiences left to appreciate our resplendent cultural heritage. Who can tell? But ONCE Ginger was 25, gorgeous and had fluffy shampoo in her hair. ONCE Fred was sitting at the piano, serenading her with a brand-new song, ONCE written by none others than Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields. Once Ginger & Fred floated cheek to cheek over the dance floor and the "charm about them carried us through to heaven, and all the cares and worries we had through the week seemed to vanish". We were bitten by the dance bug and fell under its spell forever. Europe had Verdi, Mozart and Beethoven, our geniuses were Kern, Porter, Gershwin, Rodgers or Berlin. Shakespeare had written immortal sonnets, we memorized and recited poems like Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale" at the tender age of 11. But it were the lyrics of Lorenz Hart, Dorothy Fields, Cole P. and Ira G. we LOVED more than anything else and we whispered and whistled these gems while dancing with our sweethearts. Debonair hoofers in our delusion, we gawky amateurs actually turned into quite lithe beings in the end. And we if we ever acquired elegance and poise, we didn't owe it to anyone but Fred & Ginger, who showed the world that dancing is more than mere acrobatics or slinky twirling, their art just oozing grace, sophistication and spirit. But that was once upon a time, very long ago. Gone are the likes of the great songwriters, the halcyon days of Americana - passé. How small and utterly improbable that time frame was, in hindsight, when all those talents came together to create such movie and music magic. When in a Manhattan studio Lady Day and Teddy Wilson would record those brilliant songs viewers themselves had whistled on their way home from the movie theatre, taking a chance of an occasional dance step up and down the curb, and turn them into works of genius for good. When people bought a movie ticket knowing that their world would be a richer place afterwards.Someday I too (or what's left of me) will be gone, as will this comment. But maybe there's the one young enthusiast who goes and buys a Ginger & Fred box-set on account of these lines. You could tie me to a chair and play these pictures in an eternal loop and still I wouldn't grow tired of them. And I know that many people feel the same, how consoling. Thanks to modern media like the DVD, these gems are now available to new audiences, discerning adolescents and old farts alike, as good as it gets and quite affordable at that."Someday when I feel awfully low. When the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of them ... and the way they looked the nights we watched them."
