Dude, I was active duty Marine Corps during the first Desert era... I loved the Chicken ala king and would trade for it! The trick to enjoying MREs is first, you GOTTA stir it up so it's not a slimy slab of fish. Secondly, you got to mix things.... like the sausage and hashbrowns. Third... never, EVER discard the Tabasco sauce, salt, or pepper from a prior meal! Those are your best friend for when you get a bad MRE. Lol The one I didnt like was the Corned beef Hash... which is weird because I typically like that stuff. The pound cakes!... you gotta try them!

The chicken Ala King is VERY good. I liked most of the different menus from ALL the eras. The Mexican food (fajita?) one (I can't remember the name of it, I ate my last one last year) is very good. If you set the tortillas in the sun to dry and harden, you can shave the edges to a sharp knife edge and throw them like Frisbees at the enemy's necks. 🤣 Honestly I'd pull peanut butter and jelly from other rats, and put it on the tortillas, (with honey and mayonnaises if i could find it) and roll them up and make a delicious snack. I joined the Civil Air Patrol (Auxiliary US Air Force) when i was 14 years old, in the late 1970's. I became the cadet commander for my squadron in 1981. We ate Korea and Vietnam era C rations in the can, courtesy of the US Air Force, as a gift to us cadet Airmen. They were (mostly) delicious. Those MREs served us well when we were on exercises, or when we were called out of school for days at a time, doing Search And Rescue for downed aircraft or lost hunters (mostly found those guys dead) and for the subsequent "cordon camping trips" for up to a week while we guarded the aircraft, 24/7 in 12 hour shifts. I ate literally HUNDREDS of MRE's before I actually joined the Air Force Security Forces. And then... I ate Literally *1,000'S* of MRE's because of all the alerts, readiness calls and exercises we had. (And Cold war crap, a few TDY deployments all over Europe). I actually find current enlisted guys in the San Antonio TX area, and ask them to give me their expired MRE's by the full case. I still eat them today, better than ever now than in the history of US MREs. I've brought many here to my house in Mexico. I still have about a dozen left. Maybe I'll do a video of them? Yeah. I'm doing one today. I'll post it later. The pork ribs in barbecue sauce are very good, some of my favorite kinds. Pasta... Best. But they're all good and nutritious. (Except the Vomelette ) I grew in size from age 18 to 24 because of military food, gaining 3 inches and 35 pounds over those 6 years. I kept gaining to 190 pounds (55 pounds heavier than arrival at MEPS) at age 30... And I NEVER had any fat. I blame military food and MREs. 👍🇺🇲 GOOD STUFF. Military life was very good for me, and MREs, even better. Seeing Mav enjoy them is a joy for me and a lot of us OG's, too.

I actually liked the chicken Ala King. My older brother was a 1stSGT in the Marine Corps and he would always give me MRE's that he and others had had left over from training exercises. I was in a Boy Scouts High Adventure Post at the time and we did weekend excursions' and traveled throughout the country back packing, rock climbing, mountaineering, etc. and I always brought along MRE's. The trick to the maple sausage MRE was to break it up, add it to the hashbrowns and take the squeeze cheese from another MRE and mix it all together. It was good that way. The chicken ala king I liked. you heated it in water and I would break up the crackers and add it on top with some hot sauce... Spot on!

BUSSIN!😋👍 We also had a breakfast omelet but it was so disgusting no one could stomach it either. At least yours had some veggies in it! lol! Yours looked just like the omelet meal we had. YUMMY! The pork meatballs in bbq sauce and rice wasn't to bad. Try and check that one out if you ever get the chance Mav. Some of our mre's had a chocolate fudge bar in them that would put you three weeks ahead of schedule if you know what i mean so be careful Mav! It was ok though, we had an oatmeal bar that would counter act against the fudge bar.😁Some meals even contained mini tobasco hot sauce bottles but even tobasco sauce couldn't save that nasty tasting omelet.

You do have to be careful with really old MRE's, if they weren't stored correctly the mains will go bad-- if you freeze MRE's they will last pretty much forever and only need to thaw them out to eat then (that includes all the old ones if whoever originally acquired them was diligent in doing that).

I joined the Civil Air Patrol (Auxiliary US Air Force) when i was 14 years old in the late 1970's. I became the cadet commander for my squadron in 1981. We ate Vietnam era C rations in the can, courtesy of the US Air Force to us, when we were on exercises, or when we were doing Search And Rescue for downed aircraft or lost hunters (mostly found them dead) and for the subsequent cordon camping trip for up to a week while we guarded the aircraft. I ate literally HUNDREDS of MRE's before I actually joined the Aur Force, and then... I ate Literally *1,000'S* of MRE's because of all the alerts, readiness calls and exercises we had. (And Cold war crap and a few TDY deployments). I actually find current enlisted guys in the San Antonio area, and get them to give me their expired MRE's by the box full. I still eat them, and I've brought many here to my house in Mexico. I still have anout a dozen left. Maybe ill do a video of them? The pork ribs in barbecue sauce are very good, some of my favorite kinds But they're all good and nutritious. I grew in size from age 18 to 24 because of military food, gaining 3 inches and 35 pounds. And I NEVER had any fat. I blame military food and MREs. 👍🇺🇲 Military life was very good for me, and MREs, even better. Seeing Mav enjoy them is a joy for me and a lot of us OG's, too.

I served in Air Force 85-06 deployed to Kuwait during Desert Storm and the Iraq War - ate lots of MREs never had the omelet and looks like that was a good thing. The chicken à la king I thought was ok if you put the tabasco sauce in it. My favorite was beef stew and the spaghetti and meatballs.

Great video. The chicken ala king brings back memories of me and my friends camping. We would take my dads MREs . And there would always be chicken ala king. We would warm it in water and break the cracker up in it. It was like eating wet cardboard. Lol. But when you were a kid in the 80s you didnt really mind it. 😂😂

Pork sausage is DEFINITELY not the worst MRE today in the ARMY. The granola in that MRE is really good and so are the hash browns. The move is to break up apart the sausage and add it into the hash browns with the syrup. I can't say that any of the ones we get today are actually disguising but I also don't like eating any of them anymore if I have a choice. I bring my own food to the field. The BEST MRE today - I go with Mexican Style Chicken Stew.....really good actually.

a few summers ago I was out working on the wildland fire line, we got spiked out for 11 days fighting this spot fire. resources were pretty low and we had to rely on airdropped MRE's for food. I tried pretty much every single one, and i have a simple policy now: Any meal that comes with a tortilla is usually pretty good.

When I was in we were eating the canned rations. Gotta tell you these look like gourmet meals. I got a chance to try some from the 90’s. There were a couple hard to choke down, but looking at some of those cans, mainly lima beans and ham, that was enough there to make a person quit eating. The best had to be corned beef hash. Many times I just ate peanut butter or jelly on the canned crackers. One of the guys brought me in canned beef stew when you pulled the cord the can heated up. But those on occasion would just heat up without the cord. Had a mess in the shop to clean up. These new MREs really taste a bunch better, they need the corned beef hash though. I still buy it quite a bit. I now make my own MREs for my road trips. Like Mav got a fridge for my truck. I have both butane and propane stoves. I’m 64 now, but my survival mode still kicks in. All our rations were Nam leftovers. I had a couple of faves. My other half who passed away a couple of years ago had some stored under his rack at the cabin. He called it his emergency stash. His son took all that stuff.
