I Looked At Negative Yakuza 0 Reviews So You Don't Have To

Yakuza 0 is by far one of the best games I’ve ever experienced and it was a true joy throughout, from its stunning visuals and world building, capturing the 1980s Japanese perfectly with an abundant amount of great and goofy side content, giving a good contrast to the drama and crime filled main story. The combat system is fluid and exciting, and with 4 different combat stances for each character, there leaves a lot of room for you to find your own playstyle, and there is always a way to counter bosses and tougher enemies. A lot of people can agree with me on this, it’s clear from the overwhelmingly positive reviews the game has on steam, but what about those who disagree? Who disliked the game so much to the point where they went out of their way to write a review. What is it about this game that they dislike and hate? And that’s when I decided to spend an hour of my life reading these steam, (along with metacritic and amazon) reviews. As you can imagine, there were a few reviews that were garbage, memey, or telling you to stop looking at negative reviews and to enjoy this masterpiece. But there were a few who genuinely spoke about why they dislike the game...

there is some weird issues that the game triggers on some configurations. The stuttering issues are caused by the bluetooth service constantly scanning for devices, which usually happens if you use bluetooth to connect your gamepad. For the text based cutscenes; you can hold down x (a i think on xbox controllers) and the right bumper at the same time and the cutscenes will skip through way faster than mashing x. You'll still have to wait for some animations to finish and stuff but it's faster than mashing. If you think the game sucks because there's a lot of cutscenes, you clearly haven't understood what makes this game so good. The cutscenes are in real-time. They're voice acted as if REAL PEOPLE are talking. If you get bored listening to someone in real life, or talking to someone for more than 2 minutes makes you want to leave, that's probably why you don't like this masterpiece. The cutscenes are a draw-back and a point of interest. It's called world-building and storytelling, folks. It can be a bit slow at the start, but Yakuza 0 wants you to play along. You can mess around all you want when you've finished the story, but until then procrastinating the story too much is just gonna hurt your opinion on this game in the long run. I've seen people complain about how it's just a boring visual novel, but this isn't the only game that does that, right? Yakuza 0 has story, and sure, if you just wanna play it for the memes and cool gameplay/minigames sure, you do you, but until you've done what it wants you to do, you're being stupid if you won't play along. You can take a break in the story and grind out fights or play some minigames, that's what they're there for, but completely forgetting the core story at hand is just a bad thing to do. You're supposed to do what this game says. Buy it now, before people with bad taste stop you.

As a guy who has put Yakuza 0 in one of the few games that is 10/10 for me personally, I want to play the devil's advocate and try to see the other end of this argument looks like, it would be nice if you could join in and have a little civil discussion. The problems with Yakuza 0's cutscenes are that they have 3 different ways of providing the story (the full voice acted typical game cutscenes when you sit down and watch like a movie, the fully voice acted but in game type of dialogues that you'll have to press a button to continue the dialogue, and the just pictures with voice acted that looks like they're communicating with telekinises), which in together could make an ill-connected presentation of the story, let me explains: - The first one is your typical game cutscenes, nothing too much to criticize, though it might put you in the backseats to watch how to story plays out, but that's the problem that every game has, and if it the game has too much of those, it is natural that you'll constantly feel disconnected with the game while the cutscenes are played out. - The second type requires you to keep pressing the button to progress the dialogue, and the characters will just sit in one place until you do so, so for someone that just wants to enjoy the cutscenes and has some popcorn, it is hard to just sit back and watch, when you have to constantly pressing the button, which is annoying to say the least. - And finally the just pictures with voice acted characters telekinises with each other, it has the same flaws of the previous type, but better camera shots in exchange for some kind of artistic presentation. Put all three together and you suddenly has a question on why the game just didn't use one type of cutscenes (the first type) but made upto three types to create this one annoying experience, especially when they're chained together back to back one type to another, you'll have to move from your seats to press button just because the game feels like it wants to change cutscenes style. Another problem with too much cutscenes is that for people who has played multiple playthroughs of the game and has practically remembered the entire plot, it is irritating to just press skip every time a cutscene occur, and even more painful with the other 2 types of cutscenes, which you can't skip but just speed it up, when you just want to punch some dudes cause this is your 100th playthroughs (yes I know climax battles exists, but as a person who has unlocked all of it, it is torture just to unlock it all, and quite reasonable if someone just doesn't want to do it). Thanks for reading all this, once again I just want to say that Yakuza 0 is one of the best games I have ever played, but that doesn't stop me from seeing its flaws, and I hope to have a nice conversation over this, and we could learn something after all this is over, have a nice day.
@impactored2873
@impactored2873 2 года назад
@@qgvinh8614 I've completed all the climax battles in 0 and replayed the story multiple times. I do get it, having to rewatch all the cutscenes that may or may not be voice acted which can make you feel less immersed, especially if it's the second type where you're just getting up out of your seat to make Kiryu say "ok." It really is understandable, but I find that even having to just read what the characters are saying and being forced to imagine their voices in my head is an upside for me, because if I can imagine the characters saying anything, then you know it's good voice acting, but I can get that some people just wanna get through the story cutscenes to just beat up some random crazy guy. I do think it's part of the problem though, as Yakuza 0 is a mainly story based game, so if you won't even sacrifice your time and sanity to get through the cutscenes that seem a bit useless/and or weird due to being not voice acted between a few voice acted cutscenes (looking at you heat action tutorial from chapter 1), you can't really call yourself interested in the story. Even if it has no relevance to Dojima, the Lot or even Kiryu/Majima's backstory, it still fleshes out the world which personally is something I like, but I get that it's not for everyone, because one of the main draws from the game IS obviously the combat. (and the silly side stuff) so it's easy to forget why the devs made the game. An anniversary project to further develop things Y1-5 did not about character backstory. Good understanding of my opinion though, maybe not everyone thinks of this game I do. My friend recently picked up the game because I told him to, and the first things he did were: Refuse to use Gamepad because the controls to switch the controls were too sensitive Not use lock on or block Completely forget the story at chapter 1 (despite me telling him the best way for him to get money was finishing chapters or going later in to unlock the business minigames) Personally, I can't stand when people treat the game like a silly side quest beatem-up adventure game, because it really doesn't do the game justice. That's why I personally say the cutscenes are the most important.

@@impactored2873 I wholeheartedly agree, I understand everything you have mentioned, the voiceless dialogues are one of the best things when you try to do the voice act by yourself or with your friends, or maybe just imagine their voices inside your head, this made one of the most engaging experience I have ever had playing a game (I'm looking at you Bacchus, with the onlt canon voice of him is Boy, and the rest is up to your imagination)

I play this game on my PS5. The camera can be annoying (especially in narrow streets), and sometimes when I try to save the game, it will just freeze. Forcing me to close it and start again, and to lose progress, which turns every attempt to save the game into s stressful situation. But other than these 2 (I'll admit - major) problems, I enjoy the game a lot. I don't mind the long cutscenes, or reading all of the dialog, because it is broken to smaller portions of text that you need to read each time, which is less daunting than let's say Disco Elysium for example, where you need to sometimes read walls of text at a time.

I don't know if this is specific to the Xbox Game Pass version, but either way it's extremely frustrating and none of the fixes online work. Even worse is the fact that fishing is required for one of Majima's side missions, so you either have to get really lucky and get all 3 fish first try, or keep reloading the game when it crashes which is a major pain.

personally i had the inventory glitch once, the steam guides showed me how to fix it in a matter of seconds... also issues using a usb controller nor xbox or ps4. Can launch but not detecting the controller well... fixed launching the game via big picture... Talking about gameplay, story, scene, cutscenes, sidequest and main...I would really want my memory to be erased so i can had the joy, the excitement and the fun i had the very first time i played it... I absolutely love it! overall solid 9.5/10

Y0 was my first yakuza game and is one of my favorite games of all time. The first time I played it I went all the way to the first boss fight before kiryu is expelled and died for the first time. I was shocked then when I didn't have auto save and I didn't know you could save on the phones around town. 10/10 beat the game at least 3 times and I expect to do another playthrough soon

The Yakuza series is one of those series that quickly rose to be one of my favorite game series of all time. I discovered the Yakuza games about the same time as Yakuza 0 was released on Steam and I lingered on it for quite some time, as the game just didn't excite me that much. Then it went on sale and I grabbed it and oh fucking boy, I discovered what a marvelous masterpiece I had stumbled upon. I played the game for 13 hours straight and finished the story in like 3 days, after which I just stuck around and did side missions and everything. After that, I played all the newer games and I have not found a single one that I dislike. Every game from Yakuza 0 to Like a Dragon is so special to me in so many ways. The visceral brawler-type gameplay is just something you don't see executed THIS well in video games. Like a Dragon on the took a lot of getting used to, I've almost never played JRPG games, so the sudden shift from the brawler-type gameplay that I fell in love with didn't initially sit right with me, but because the iconic feel of the cities, the characters, and the fights is still there, even though it does feel a lot slower now, I got used to it pretty quickly. That kind of dramatic change in the actual genre of the game is something I don't think many game series can pull off successfully. It's kind of like Battlefield decided to become a 5v5 round-based shooter. Sure, the gunplay is still there, but they'd have to execute every other aspect perfectly for the fans to adjust and I do not think it would be possible. So the fact that Ryu Ga Gotoku pulled the genre switch off so well that even I got used to it, says a lot about the quality of the production. It's not perfect though, I would prefer a system closer to what the FF7 remake has. I still prefer that I can command my allies and my character to do things, but that I can also swing my comically large sword around too without having to wait for the moves to queue and the turn to change. Overall, the Yakuza series is one of the greatest things Japan has ever produced in the video-game sphere and I cannot fucking wait for the next installment. It also helped to adjust to the new style that Ichiban fucking SLAPS as a protagonist, I fucking love him. Shooreh Pippi, Shooreh Pippi!

i felt like the ones with black screen and crash issues have like maybe trash setup or smt thats why they keep crashing and abt the storyline and substory they do know that theres only some substory they had to do inorder to progress other than that they can take their time to finish. It took me maybe around 3 days or more to finish the main story and one week each to get the legend styles (maybe im just a grinder ) and im actually having fun from it. The dialogues are not much of an issue honestly if you have played other games that have smt like that (for example genshin or honkai ) you just need to spam your way through.Cutscenes are fine they are mostly skippable but i dont understand why will you skip this masterpiece (unless speedrunning as said in the video). So yeah i kinda stopped after getting all the legend styles cuz im lazy to grind money for them anyways overall quite a masterpiece and thank you for reading through this comment.

@Rasburr
@Rasburr 2 года назад
While playing mahjong, what I would do is take pictures of the board when an opponent won, and then tried to replicate the same hands. I've just put them up on a google drive, you can take a look here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/191jEccROI5vRtLlDu7f-tV5UrjlX15bp?usp=sharing unfortunately there is no "easy way". Although I do recommend playing in the lower difficulty hands, it takes longer to get the points the opponents will get worse hands, giving you more chances to get points yourself. Good luck on the mahjong journey, I didn't like it at first but when I learned how to play it became very addictive.

I think there is a misunderstanding people have with the text based cutscenes. Instead of watching a movie like with the type 1 cutscenes, the player is forced to play through the cutscene taking them out of the experience because they have to tediously press the button to scroll through the walls of text. And it's not like this game has the best pieces of writing for all text. A lot of times it's just "usual Japan grunting noises but in text form". Having the player play through the cutscenes instead of simply watching them play out really kills the flow. I've beaten this game 3 times. Loved it to death. But that was by far my most consistent complaint. It's like marathoning a movie series but you have to press pause and play after each line of dialogue is spoken by a character. Most games with heavy story reliance are automatic and don't require player input most of the time. It's there to just let you sit down and immerse yourself. These games through all of their titles doesn't do that for obvious budget (or even weird negligence at times?) The amount of reused assets is insane for this franchise. It's normal for most but man it's extremely apparent here

@@ziontea7045 agree the voiceless texts was my biggest gripe with the series , I got used to it over time but I would still prefer if everything was voiced it would have made the world a lot more immersive than it already is and it would have motivated me to go find every single substory But I understand it was the budget that is the problem , at least yakuza 6 and LAD had voices for most of the dialogues

I think some of these are fair, the actual core gameplay is thin on the ground, the whole experience Yakuza is trying to sell you beyond the story are all in the minigames and item descriptions - a night on the town in Tokyo or Osaka. Stepping over the dude comfortably passed out in the street so you can buy beer and snacks from a 24-hour store and shooting the shit with a salaryman who's oversharing his life problems. Eating the biggest bowl of ramen in the shop after wasting your money on pachinko, dancing and crane games at 3AM. Pure immersion, it's what got me through lockdown when my plans to go to Japan again went to shit and it helped a lot.

I’d actually love a Yakuza movie. Most people would turn it down because they think it’s just some whacky crap after seeing some of those funny/weird sidestories that flood the internet. I never really had much interest in these series until a friend borrowed me his copies of 0 and Kiwami. Liked those games so much that i went out and bought the entire series for my own. The complaints about the controller are a bit understandable in a way. I played them in PC too and they seem to have an issue with Xbox controllers where you press a button and it does nothing. This mostly happens 95% of the time after you grab an enemy.

My biggest problem is with the pacing, but not for what you think. I really like this game, but every time it switches to the Majima portions, the game feels so much more tedious. The fighting styles are worse, the missions are boring, and the pacing comes to a halt when you (spoilers) watch a cutscene where Kiryu almost gets shot by his own brother after one of the most intense levels I've ever played in a game is interrupted by "Woah!! Wacky club owner just HAVING A BALL!" It got so bad that on after that specific event I just described happened I skipped all the Majima cutscenes to get back to Kiryu's story.
