I hope you enjoyed my descent into milk madness. There are FOUR unaired (and *cough* unfinished) episodes available exclusively on Patreon and RU-vid memberships. Next week's deep dive on bambara nuts (and bambara nut milk) is also now available for members. The spaghetti western intro was hilarious :) Even though they already made almond milk in the Middle Ages, I still find it hard to believe that your cashew and almond milk has nothing but nuts, water, sugar. Here in Germany, every brand of plant milk has a ton of additives so that it wouldn't break etc.
This channel is like the best late 90’s pbs show that never was. It’s so informative yet entertaining. Thank you so much for making these videos Jared.
The seeds themselves are less than tasty to start with... You can't make something good if the core of what you make it from, is trash taste to begin with.
There's some recipes online, though i'm not sure how the compare to the Swedish product. I've made it and I like it. Really good in a smoothie. Like all these plant based milks though, it's a give and take with pros and cons. I seriously think the best option is mixing several to combine their best characteristics.
Potato Milk???!!! 🧠💢🌌 I never would have thought.... it's probably great...::😂 I'm several years sober, but as a once frequently vodka based alcoholic, a potato milk and vodka drink sounds very dangerous and would be called a::::........???
Ngl when I saw this new video at first I was excited for all new fake milk face off videos, but a compilation of the old ones with bonus features is still exciting in its own right.
I've got an easy winner for you when it comes to coffee and baking desserts, Aroy-D Coconut Milk, found at nearly every asian grocery store. Has almost the same fat content as half & half (I've even made it into whipped cream by stabilizing it with gelatin), the fat doesn't separate and clump up, and it doesn't melt and form an oil slick on top of your coffee. If you like the taste of coconut then it's just outright better than real half&half in every possible way
The best vegan milk in my opinion is milk made from chufas. In Spain they call it horchata de chufas. When you make it at home the milk is naturally sweet, creamy and full of natural prebiotics. It’s easy to make, although you have to soak the chufas for two days.
I agree I have just bought a pack of six cartons from Amazon. Here in the UK chufa are called tiger nuts and it is quite easy to grow(soak them in water for approx 24hrs before planting). They are the underground rhizomes of Cyperus esculentus.
Best thumbnail to date for you. I think i understand why you dont get creative with you're regular fruit review thumbnails. But at the same time, i feel like this level of creativity brought to you're fruit reviews would really help with getting attention!@@WeirdExplorer
1:00:45 "These days, movies that are coming out are doing the opposite. People who know what they're doing are making something, but they're not really trying." Excellent point that perfectly encapsulates something I've been trying to put into words for years! It really demonstrates the importance of effort (putting a piece of yourself in it) when making art, not simply proficiency.
I would easily watch an entire season two of this but I think I’m in the minority here 😅 this was a fantastic cut of all the episodes though, thank you. It was a blast rewatching these and with the added context
I used to be able to name every nut milk that there was. And it used to drive my cat crazy, because she used to say, "Jared ‘Weird Explorer’ Rydelek, if you don't stop naming nut milks," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start meowing. I'd say, "Peanut milk. Hazelnut milk. Cashew nut milk. Macadamia nut milk." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nut milks!" And Kitty used to be able to make the sound, she couldn't talk, but she'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut milk. Pine nut milk, which is a nut milk, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut milk. Red pistachio nut milk. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut milk.
Ok, 47 minutes in, and so impressed that you managed to work out the fight scene from They Live (might've been able to work in your cat's eyes for the female love interest.) RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper! Sarah to Jared "You have no power over me!" The Thing reference was both hilarious and frightening- well done! Wish I knew what movie you were referencing in the final battle, but I've no idea. That said, it was hilarious! And yes, Bart Simpson drank plenty of Malk, yet still had bone health issues!
It's so funny that I have just watched the hole milk substitute playlist today and a bit later the same day you are posting this video. Now I had the opportunity two watch everything twice. Thank you so much for this milk series. It really made my day (twice). I'm really looking forward to watching the incomplete new videos.
Yes! I loved these videos and I'm glad to have commentary/behind the scenes look at them now. The creativity and the amount of work you put into the film reference fight sequences really came through.
A man, a plan: handful of almonds, a thumb of vanilla bean paste, a blender, and 30 oz of distilled water. Blend full speed for 30 seconds.. pour contents into strainer and into your favorite almond milk container. Enjoy
I don't think there's a single best alternative. Depends on the application. Some things favor one, some favor another. Coconut milk is my favorite for soups and sauces, oat for coffee, cashew for ice-cream, almond for cereal or drinking straight.
Pre-made commercial plant milks are expensive and not very nice. Liquidise (or blend) nuts, seeds or soaked tiger nuts for the best alternative milks. The makings store forever and you can make them up as needed. Fresh milk is always best. Why pay for shipping water long distances? My favourites are almond, cashew, sesame/tahini, hemp seed or sunflower seed. You can sweeten it or salt it or add other flavours if you want. Jasmine flower chocolate milk is rather indulgent. Blend, leave for half an hour to soak, blend again. That should be enough if you have a poweful blender. If not, repeat. You can soak larger nuts beforehand if you want. 100g of nuts make a litre of thick milk in most cases. Which is two ounces nuts to a pint of milk.
Huh this was actually really fun! I believe i also subbed around the pandemic I think because my Filipino friend said theres more types of Durian and naturally that lead me here, but I had no clue you were doing horror milk-alternative parody shorts. Like I remember the cloudberry video hitting my feed, but not these, and I'm glad i saw them now after the dragon fruit tournament. You have great taste... In horror movies btw
I just tried BAMnut milk made from bambara groundnut originating in west Africa. Tasted pretty good and seems like a decently sustainable alternative (if their marketing is to be believed).
This was *impossibly* entertaining. I watched this weeks Bambara Nut video and laughed my socks off at the nut-milk fight. It was simply brilliant. Best thing I'd seen in months and months. And then I watched this video (initially, I'd been put off because it's 90 mins long). Best hour and a half I have spent this year. Obviously, the simple coparisons between different plant-based milks was really interesting. But the Fake Milk Face-offs just made my soul sing. I can't remember when I enjoyed a RU-vid video more. Sir, this was pure, unadulterated genius and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
We use the milkadamia the most out of the nut milks. We like it. We use the unsweetened one. I had no idea all of those ingredients were in there and I have never noticed a vitamin taste. It just tastes tropical to me. We like it with cold and hot cereals. We use it in some baking recipes when the tropical taste doesn't interfere. Otherwise, we prefer planet oat milk extra creamy; especially if making hot chocolate. We use cashews and water to make cashew cream, if a dish calls for cream. If cooking, we often use soy milk, unless we're making Thai food, then we use coconut milk. They all have different strengths and uses.*We like Oatly Ice Cream. *For egg nog substitute, we like Elmhurst Oat Nog.
Im very grateful that even tho this is long ,i wasnt at all bored or tempted to turn off.You do great vids and i thank you.Your wife is a blessed woman.❤
Costco’s Kirkland oat milk is great and you get a whole bunch of cartons for $10. It’s slightly sweeter than some but I don’t notice it even used for cooking savory meals.
My favorite was the labyrinth reference, I also love that movie. 😆 This was fun to watch! Thank you for the time and all the work and thought that went into making all of these.
I had to comment again after watching all of this video. It really brought back bad and sad memories of covid. I also didn't know that the cloud berry video was so popular. I guess because it isn't rare here in Newfoundland. I grew up on the Burin Peninsula, so there were bakeapples (cloud berries) all around me on the bogs.
So so good! I was in Beijing in 2020 and internet was spotty because China. I am so happy that you decided to re-edit these and put them together in a long form. Again so very good
Every time he says milk, I'm reminded of the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre's rendition of _Macbeth,_ where they always referred to it as "human kindnessmilk".
Wait! Not only did he portray the almond milk that lost the first face off laying down on a table, but he put the hat where it would fall, brilliant, but he also put some milk on the table to represent the blood 😅 and he let it continue to leak while filming video?! There are productions in Hollywood that are worse quality 😂
Interesting seeing all the different types of advertising for the different kinds of milk lol Also the movie homages are amazing, I didnt get the labyrinth and they live ones tho, or the last one Never knew about this series before lol
Dear Mr. Jared: Hello, this is Yubin Lee. Hope you're doing well. I just felt that, regarding to video making, you are not just a vlogger who travels around the world and eats exotic fruits, but a movie director (kind of...?) because between every matches of this video, the moment how defeated nut milks got their punishment (and death), I could imagine your written scripts or sketches about them. The real question is... Have you ever had a dream to become a movie director - like James Rolfe (Cinemassacre), who is famous for The AVGN and a horror movie nerd? Finally, thank you for your videos which made me curious about fruits, and answering the question in advance! Best regards, Yubin Lee.
Might be a coincidence, but a popular game called Valheim has cloudberries as an in game item and released about 3 months after your cloudberry video. A sudden influx of people searching for an unusual fruit may have boosted your videos presence in the algorithm. When I was playing the game I thought it was a fictional fruit, so seeing a video like yours would have been an insta-click for me and I think that's how I found your channel. I wonder if that had anything to do with the sudden popularity of that video.
You're really getting every last bit of content from this series as possible. Really extracting as much as you can from it. Squeezing the engagement from it until it is dry.
So this is basically Weird Explorer's version of Bo Burnham's "Inside" but without the original music. Getting creative whilst going stir-crazy is a talent I guess.
Here's the explanation for a couple of the ingredients that'll be added to a lot of the products: Lectin: Works to stop the layers from separating when heated or mixed with other liquids. Celulose/xantam/any other gum: thickening agent. Intends to make the texture and mouth-feel closer to milk. Also helps with foaming for baristas/coffee shops. Vegetable oils: Trying to replicate the specific mouth feel/texture that fat gives to milk. Also helps with the foaming. Vitamins/minerals: Seed/nut milk tends to be way less nutritionally rich than actual milk, so it's trying to help out in that aspect. Some legislations also require food with low nutritional qualities to divulge so on the packaging, so they might be trying to avoid doing that.
@@WeirdExplorer I've tried all kinds of milk alternatives (including homemade versions using a Vitamix blender) across numerous brands over the past 20 years or so, mostly out of necessity, and honestly NextMilk is the only one that I can fully recommend to anyone and everyone for pretty much all use cases (haven't tested it much with baking yet though). My whole family is lactose intolerant (with some actual dairy allergies thrown in too) and it's what we all unanimously prefer (even those married into the family who have no issues consuming dairy either like it or prefer it over cow's milk). Would highly recommend trying it out if you come across it.

I enjoyed the series. If you do revisit it I wouldn’t mind a more straightforward version without the movie references. I think the last one is “The Good Son”.
I once had a coconut milk matcha latte, i don't trust the baristas in my town to brew tea right & id heard that it's harder to muck it up with plant milk, i honestly thought they had added gingerbread syrup to it before i realised that it was the milk, the only way i can describe it is as if it was made from the husks 😂 the other cafes in my town use a different brand of coconut milk that needs to be refrigerated while the shop i got the latte at was using a shelf stable one, not sure if the brands are available outside the UK but next time im in town & remember ill reply to this comment with the brands
Milkadamia has a barista version that is much creamer and goes better in coffee. I personally like it best for my cereal too. Mostly moving to drink rice milk now.
My gut is very sensitive to dairy, I can't drink normal or store bought organic milk. I've tried a lot of alternatives, but I don't really like any very much. Almond is alright, but I don't like the thicker consistency and how it's not very sustainable to grow almonds. I liked the oat milk, but that's honestly kinda a scam because it's super easy to make at home! Coconut milk makes me wheezy by itself, and I HATE soy milk. I've given up plant based milk lol. I can drink the expensive Fairlife milk though!
I have found that the creamline milk (basically as unprocessed as legally allowed, to my understanding) is sold by a relatively local creamery, to my local co-op where I buy it. It's about the only milk I can drink with minimal consequence. I only use it in my coffee, but using regular milk even from them, I can tell. I wish you luck on your lactose endeavors.
I'm lactose intolorent so I mostly use oat, coconut, or almond milk in my smoothies, i dont really drink milk stright anymore. Soy milk is super popular in Thailand and I drink it pretty frequently these. My partner drinks cows milk and i always forget what "gone off" dairy milk smells like so if i ever need to bake with it I always have to ask my partner if they think it's gone off. If you come back to thailand I know you like going to the fruit markets, but if you go into the big supermarkets like BigC or Robinson theres a really good selection of non-dairy milks. Vamino is my chocolate milk of choice but lactoysoy is very popular with students.
Just popping in here to say that if you’re vegan be sure to buy a milk that is fortified with calcium. If you’re making your own you’re missing out on very important nutrients. If your not vegan of course do whatever makes you happy :)
Jared, the best plant-based milk is... the one you do by yourself at home. It's easier than people think, it tastes better and it's not sterilized. You just need a blender or a juicer (depending on the nut or seed you choose) and a nut milk bag for straining.
