I Love Free Software...But I Still Use Proprietary Software 

Adobe has good integration between software but few cases of software most times foss is better.

Getting into FOSS, I actually came to do things on computers that I had never done before. So I don't miss the proprietary software that I never used anyway. So much of the stuff on Windows would say FREE (as in no price), but it was time after time trial disableware.

Except.. when you really need something to work well, and we're talking programs for dedicated things like script writing, audio processing, manipulating photos, and so on, the commercial products simply work better. Often many levels better. I do music production on the side as well as composition and the tools available are.. they work I guess, but when time is money and conversely, money is time, you spend the money to get the real thing to get out of the studio that 10 minutes faster and get on with your life.

I have a simple condition - if a FOSS software has 95% or more of the capabilities of its proprietary counterpart, with similar ease of use, I am switching to FOSS. Otherwise I'll stick to proprietary.

"Most others couldn't care less". I would add "as long as they don't have to pay for it". In my experience, people who use lots of proprietary software use pirated/cracked variants of it, which didn't cost them a dime. If they had to pay.. I can assure you they'd be a lot more interested in trying out FOSS alternatives.

So long as those games are source-available (e.g. minecraft is proprietary but basically source-available). Being art, or software, or merely a flaming pile of shit doesn't change the fact that people have a fundamental right to the complete source of what they use.

GIMP is good for basic stuff, as long as the projects aren't so demanding when it comes to features you need to achieve them, but once you get to make something more professional GIMP just doesn't suffice. Graphic tablet support on GIMP is terrible. It has huge problems with input lag, messing up your line shapes. GIMP doesn't offer non-destructible effects pipeline that is rendered in real time and possible to edit at any later point in time instead of being rasterized into the image. Last time I checked, it also didn't have support for 3D shapes and effects. And last, there is just much more 3rd-party resources like brushes, textures, templates that support proprietary editors, but not GIMP. All those minor problems just pile up, making GIMP not reliable and making it just feel like designed by developers that never did any graphic design or even talked to a graphic designer. And this is a problem that's unique only to GIMP. Krita is great and really capable when it comes to making art with a tablet, Inkscape while not as feature-packed as Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Corel Draw, it's still very reliable and get all the most important features right. Blender is just a masterpiece among free software. GIMP... is simply bad. So while I get that there are people who use GIMP, find it useful and even prefer it over Photoshop, the undeniable truth is that GIMP is only sufficient up to a certain point. Beyond that it simply doesn't deliver. At this time I don't even hope or expect anymore for GIMP to become better. Personally I'd rather see a brand new piece of FOSS for retouching, photo-manipulation and graphical design that matches the PS user profile.

@@NidraxGaming I mean, the thing is that Adobe started and for years was only available on Mac. The design interface and workflow is noticeably better on MacOS as well, than on Windows. Such that almost all of the publishing world uses Mac workstations or similar ( ie - insall MacOS on your PC ). Lightroom for example, simply does magic with photos, and Pagemaker is.. well, you get the idea. It's why I still have a Macbook Pro. In my case, it's even more critical as it's music editing and publishing software. There is no analog to a tool like VocAlign. Most MIDI software tools are also simply not reasonable to use in a production environment. Yes, we are always looking for a cheaper alternative. Cakewalk is a good example, but plugin support (say for the above tool) is.. kludgy. The interface is also seriously like something out of 1998. lol.

if i cant get paid for it (if thats what i wanted from a project) then i wont create it. sure some small fixes etc id happily give away for free....but if i fixed a major thing or created a major thing id charge for it........ and id rather let the world suffer than myself go without food because greedy people want it for free. sure, not every creation is worth a million dollars...but why CANT I make $60k/yr?

Paying royalties would inherently go against copyleft and freedom aspects of foss. Paying upfront or asking a subscription for getting that software and as the whole Red Hat situation has shown that even the GPL only requires you to provide access to source code to those customers, so all that is fine, but you don't get to claim royalties if someone else forks that code and releases it for free or as their own product.

Fun fact: what was it dual boot with? Windows 98 on a 10gb hard drive. Same pc with which i learned c++ and dabbled in java.

@@MH_VOID It doesn't matter how you pay but how much, you submit every payslips you do. Those software helps you automatically calculate everything from holidays, sick days and superannuation (which is the pension system here). If you actually pay workers or your obligations with the taxation office is a different story. But they know "your movements" for sure and they can cross-check it with your bank accounts if something goes wrong.

If your free then your free, most people will never be able to understand the code to modify a software. Everyone is free to choose a Non-FOSS option if it suits thier needs or FOSS if it hopefully works out that way. You say Lazy but this makes no sense, you didn't spend possibly years developing something. You spent 5 minutes downloading thier work but say they're the lazy ones.... Ok lol Developers are free to have a choice to do what they want with thier work and your free to not use/buy it.

Sue them or at the very least call your credit card company and make them forcefully cancel for you! That completely falls apart if your usage supports it. FOR EXAMPLE, if you want to play a proprietary videogame, you are within your rights to choose to do so (though it's extremely frowned upon), but you must make sure not to pay the makers of that game, and should also try to spoof any data it collects and be as hostile a user as possible, and generally try to be silent about your usage of that game

@@MH_VOID i feel the example of video games is a bit extreme. if you're talking about aaa games: sure, pirate it, be hostile, since most of the bigger publishers dont give a shit about the consumer and it's not like one person not playing their games is gonna bankrupt them. but even most of the games i play (indie games or games by smaller studios) on steam are proprietary, and the LAST thing i want to do is steal games from independent creators who spent years working on their games so they can both support themselves as well as show their creative vision to the world. the asterisk is kind of warranted there

@@shotzitd for those smaller games, you look for the source code online and if you don't find it, contact the creators and say you're interested in buying their game but first want to ensure that the source code will be made available to you as is your right. If they respond positively, or you found the source code online yourself, go ahead and buy the game. In the unfortunate but all too common case otherwise, the game is effectively considered taboo no man's land, owned by nobody, created by somebody who should be repudiated and shamed, and of which everyone should stay away from and forget about. If you decide to play it then, at the very least make sure to not support the creators of such evil, and to not help that evil grow. Being small is no excuse for violating people's rights.

I haven't played Minecraft in a long time but MultiMC I think it was called was pretty much just a straight-up better Minecraft launcher, and open source to boot.

that's not even to mention the ones that have straight up shown their faces on camera, and in my experience they're usually fairly attractive (see: kson)

Nope. The fundamental difference is that free-software is far closer to ethical than 99.999% of non-free software. Travel back in time and swap the backers of a free software product with the ones of a non-free software product and choosing between the two, and I'd still always choose the free-software product even if it's by the most evil company in the world and the non-free one is by what's otherwise the most benevolent human-serving organization to ever exist, unless this was one of the insanely rare cases where the free-software product itself is more unethical than the non-free product itself.

Yeah it is extremely unethical to pay for that proprietary (source-unavailable) software. If you're going to use it, you are obligated to "pirate" it. Actually kinda makes it less unethical to play a pirated $60 AAA game than a free-to-play game.

I think the ones he saw were not meant to be taken seriously and were some of the annoying ones, these ones have made him believe every single one is of the same kind, but I wouldn't blame him for it. I have seen quite a number of annoying ones and it's not a way I'd like others to be introduced to it TwT The anime style is also my favourite, and it seems to be the most commonly used one, which is good for me tbh, I just never liked showing myself on the Internets. Having a made-up character do it for me is helpful, not only because it gives others something to associate with me, but also because I can draw it and make it do almost anything some bad apples have tainted the public's view of anyone who uses a vtuber anime girl or furry or whatever to represent oneself, I've seen others who show themselves on the Internet dismiss the whole idea similar to how DT does and show no interest in it (which is fine by me, but would be better with less assumptions TwT )
