Actually, many women worked. Ricky made good money. So did Daren from Bewitched. This was the fantasty for many women. To get to stay at home. But the reality was you needed the money. My mother worked. My grandmother worked. I worked. Split shifts, 10 on, two off. Would have loved to have stayed home and did the first few years when my children were young. Then my husband had a 400 dollar a month drop in income. So I needed to go out and work to cover luxurious like food, toilet paper, soap, gas, electric bill, etc. My mother and grandmother wrote housewife on the census, but they still worked outside the home. My dad could cook, clean and even unravel a sock and sharpened two pencils to teach me how to knit. My best friend growing up remembers her Dad braiding her hair before school, as her mom was at work and cooking suppers. We are both Boomers. The men back then really stepped up and helped instead of pretending to be incompetent.
