Some say, Kitano's movies are underrated. Underrated by whom? A real artist in any art never creates anything for the sake of rating, money or fame, he just can't help creating what he is up to. He is like a transmitter of heavenly energy, so to say. He is not choosing what to create - there's just one way to do. So he doesn't need any sort of pity or compassion from anyone: he works because he can't avoid from doing so. The joy is in it itself. Inner sort. Who wins from noisy fame? Never anyone had any good from that, its just a habit to think this way. But one day it will go away. Having his part of attention from people, he got less troubles from them as well.
It is underrated because many people where he came from underestimated him because he is originally a comedian. Not a movie director especially action movies. But don't get me wrong this is masterpiece!
realistic? aniki choose to die and before he die, gave all the money to his black brother. it happen in real mafia/yakuza life? hell no. mafia/yakuza always cheating to each other. i like this movie but this movie is so unrealistic hahaha.
@@pensarefare I think the greatness of 90s Kitano is always representing some kind of idealistic, almost delusional, vision of the gangster life. Sonatine stretches this concept so much the message becomes oniric. I hate "Brother", but I recognize that his stoic patriotic vision of japanese mafia over american "shimas" could seem like a tragicomical delirium, like a grotesque fantasy of him that goes beyond what is possible for a human being. It has some "herzogian" elements to it I guess, but that's what I add for myself on the interpretation. Overall, I think that's far from his good movies, like Hana-Bi or Sonatine, that are absolute masterpieces, and really shows the fragility and sensibility of the poetry of Kitano, when it comes to tell a narrative story like this... I don't know, it appears ridiculous to me, I don't understand what his point is, if there's one. He surely is a very, very peculiar storyteller, that's for sure
will never understand why this is seen as one of his worst films. its at least in my top 3! not a perfect film but infinitely watchable for me and always evokes something in me on every watch, whether it's laughter, awe or sorrow
Да... пересечения нравов бытия и консервативных устоев , так тонко отразил Китано в этом фильме , очень сильный актёр и человек я полагаю, холодный , честный и преданный , сильный фильм , столько лет прошло как в первые увидел эту картину и до сих пор с удовольствием смотрю и каждый раз находишь что-то новое , в манерах да и во всем .
Китано долгое время был одним из самых известных комиков в Японии и Токио, но в его фильмах почему-то мало смешного. У его героев много тоски, неизбежности, безразличности и апатии - всё как в мире вокруг.

Brother meant so deep way more than just average family. For their world, we are going to hell, so we got see in the hell. We will conquer there, make devil as a bixtch. Different mentality.
Only thing I didn't like about this movie is that this song was the emotional crescendo of the film, and right as it starts to hit that point in the song, *SPOILERS* Takeshi's character is gunned down by so many guns for soooo long and it's soooo loud that you can't even hear this song over it. Other than that, great film!
Mafia life is scary, as this movie so proves. The soundtrack alone is worth checking this one out, I highly recommend it(though there are a few violently suggestive parts)!
I lived in Japan in late 1990s and often saw Kitano in these crap and absurd TV programmes which were a mix of stupidity and continuos laughter.I wonder why he took part... However behind the laughter Kitano appeared such a deep reserved person , not at all superficial , opposite from the programme intent and the other invited guests. I have watched his films over and over and found them touching and so deeply rooted in human emotions. Still today I refer to them when down. Somehow he is one of the greatest artists of our time...❤😢
apenas habia llegado a este pais lejos de mi casa alquile una cama en un cuarto sucio donde otros como yo habian pasado . me sente en la cama mientras la patrona de casa cerraba la puerta del cuarto . sobre el piso vi un par de zapatilas y al al lado de esta un videocaset viejo . esa noche cuando llegue del trabajo lleno de incertidumbre puse lel caset para verlo : esa noche anikin me mostro que la adversidad va combatida con la fuerza o la razon y que estar fuera de tu patria era un doble desafio
Took me time to know why his Lt took his own life for Cerise but he had his own men and would make his boss more powerful, the way his jaw dropped took him back to his roots. Wish they would have stayed on top a while longer.
