the"no Shields" has two reasons in the first movie they mention it attracts the sandworms and drives them into a frenzy and the other from the book if one of those laser beams hits a shield it can cause an atomic explosion. you notice how they didn't use the lasguns on the shielded Thopters but they did use it on the harvester after they had removed the air over

When they snipe the Harkonnens up on that rock the officer is shot with a maula projectile, not a laser. They were checking if the shields were on.

No worries, you're far from the only one who finds Javier's character hilarious, even in that last scene. He plays it so well, but with just enough goofiness to make it special.

This movie does not hit the way it does if the first movie doesn't take the time to set everything up the way they did. IMO of course.

Not particularly a fan of Chalamet, however I think he pulled off tbis role pretty well. He's in another movie on Netflix titled "The King" that shows his range in a similar way and is quite good.

Turning on shields in the open desert drives the worms into an insane killing frenzy. You don't turn on shields in the desert. Also, if someone uses a laser and it hits your shield, then you get a small scale atomic detonation on each end of the beam. This is why there is such a focus on melee weapons and skills, because oftentimes projectile/energy weapons are useless in a fight against a shielded enemy. The Bene Gesserit tracked the bloodlines and decided that their human eugenics program would yield the mother of the Kwitzatch Hadderach through Vladimir Harkonnen, and then the "Chosen One" through Leto Atriedes. The Reverend Mother in the two films (her name is Mohiam,) went to Vladimir when they were both younger to get him to impregnate her. For context, Vladimir was incredibly handsome and fit, like a cover model or something. Vladimir knew what she was doing and engaged in an extreme case of, "malicious compliance," by savagely raping her. She got pregnant with Jessica, but altered her body chemistry to poison Vladimir with some kind of virus or something that made his bones deteriorate, caused him to gain enormous weight, and break out in weird sores and pustules all over his body.

Same! It’s epic! Gives me chills every time I see it. Chalemet killed it and the tension he, the music, the lighting and environment is palpable and so unsettling; yet you feel so charged and elated at the same time. It did a great job of allowing you to be happy for “the good guys” but also having that gut feeling of “uh oh, this can’t be good!”

I think you aren’t alone with feeling that Pt 1 didn’t hit the way you were told it would. In my mind, it’s because it’s basically the first two acts of a story without the 3rd act resolution you get here. The book is set up that way too, but I don’t think you can tell a story like Dune in a single movie without really taking a hatchet to the world building and some major plot beats. As it stands, Villaneuve still had to trim some shit out with *both* 3 hour movies. The next book is much more straightforward and shorter, so it should adapt well to a singular 3 act movie

I read the first three Dune books as a young teenager. I never perceived Paul Atreides as a "hero" or "good guy" in the books. His enemies are bad guys. He's simply a presence, turning into a power no one has seen before. While it's a good thing he's obliterating them, in the books he becomes quite ruthless. Not evil, just capable and ruthless. And eventually, what he evolves into becomes even weirder. I will say no more.

22:15 , There are three character rich conversations from the book are missing from the showdown scene with the Emperor. 1) Thufir Hawat (the older chubby man from the first movie) Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was still loyal to House Atreides. So when he found out that Gurney was still alive, he started feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnen's spice trade. In this final scene, Thufir is given a poison needle to jab Paul with. Instead of betraying Paul he stabs his own hand with it. Thufir lives long enough to stand in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. He had served Paul's grandfather Paulus Atreides and then his father Leto Atreides. So with his last breath Thufir let Paul know "I'm still your loyal man now and for always". As soon as Thufir dies, Paul stands up, wipes away his tears and calls out Feyd Rautha. He wanted to make sure everyone responsible for the death of his father and teachers would get it. Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. Steven M. McKinley who played Thufir Hawat gave an interview about being disappointed that his work was left out of the second movie. 2) After Paul defeats Feyd, the Emperor Shaddam asks his best friend Count Hasimir Fenring to challenge Paul. Fenring is the husband of Margot Fenring the Bene Gesserit who got impregnated by Feyd. Fenring despite his mild manner appearance is the Emperor's personal hitman. Fenring is almost a Kwitzach Haderach like Paul and has been trained by his wife Margot in Bene Gesserit ways. So with all of those skills Fenring could potentially defeat Paul in single combat But when Fenring and Paul looked at one another across the throne room, they experienced a shared moment of kinship. Fenring sees in Paul all he could have become had he not been born a genetic eunuch. Because of this birth defect Fenring can't father children with his beautiful wife or any woman. Paul also sees what Fenring is seeing in that moment and conveys back to the Count not pity but brotherhood. After that shared moment, Fenring turns to his best friend Emperor Shaddam and says "No". This was the first time that Shaddam was ever turned down by Fenring and he is shook to his core. Denis Villanueve also filmed this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor. Actor Tim Blake Nelson who played Count Fenring has also given interviews about his heartbreak with being left out. 3) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries Irulan then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only. David Lynch the director of the 1984 version of Dune actually filmed both the Thufir and Chani scenes and they can be found on RU-vid.

Austin Butler (Feyd Ratha) is one hell of an amazing actor. If you thought he was good in this you got to checkout his Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning performance as Elvis Presley in Elvis. He absolutely becomes Elvis in that film. Also, Tom Hanks plays one of his few villain roles in this film as well as Col. Tom Parker, Elvis’s manager.

On your Dune video, I commented that Paul's character was one that really only became interesting in the second half, because you understood better what his character was supposed to be. In a lot of ways, Dune is Frank Herbert's cautionary tale about the dangers of following messiah-like leaders.

🤨Wait……WHAT!? 😳 Well damn…I can, with absolutely no doubt whatsoever, say that you are definitely the first person that I’ve ever heard, say that Timothy comes across like an asshole &/or has a jerk/villain vibe. In fact it’s always the exact opposite of what most people say about him! 😅 I mean like seriously my dude…whenever the topic of his casting as Paul is brought up, it’s always the other way round…they’ll say that they were doubtful that he would be able to be believable as the…🤔(idk the best way to word it)….? “Darker/intense” ish version of Paul that he ends up being 😅 tho imo he absolutely killed it (so far) as both and honestly I can’t give him enough credit for just how freaking great of a job he’s done here…it’s certainly made me respect him as an actor, as he was just not really on my radar prior to this.😉👍 ……for the record, I loved part 1 so much but it’s all good my dude, as unlike some people I understand that we’re all entitled to our opinions and there’s no “wrong” opinion imo😉 great reaction btw 👌

As a whole, I was sad that Dave Bautista and Josh Brolin were so underutilized and thought Austin Butler was pretty thinly written and the emperor as a character was non-existent, but Javier Bardem stole the show and ran with it in every scene. Best part of the movie is when he is so keenly watching Paul, that Brolin needs to snap him out and he's like "oh right, Lisan al Ghaib" 🤣🤣

Pretty common viewpoints all around. My criticisms of Part 2 are small, but they do itch a bit: Didn't get enough time with Irulan or the Emperor, I would have let Florence Pugh speak in her natural accent, and they rushed the throne room scenes. And I'm not comfortable with making Stilgar into a joke. It's not like that in the book. I'm reasonably confident you'd love the books (the six core books, and nothing else). Could be wrong, but it's seriously brain fuel.

They broke Zendaya’s character - they got rid of her kids (one of them is killed) which is a big part of the emotional arc at end, also she was down with Paul being the one as it ensured her peoples freedom and was ok with being his consort (she has more agency in books imo). Instead writer and director used her to be a counter to Stilgar (who i thought carried the film).

Religion was not created by man to "control" people, at least not in the sense that I perceive when you made your statement. Religion codifies a people's spiritual apprehension that they have gleaned through interaction with reality. People throughout history have attempted many modalities of living in harmony with reality; to the extent that is possible. When certain modalities are found to be useful over time, they tend to become codified in this way. Christianities admonition regarding the coveting of your neighbors wife, for instance. Over time, the modalities that are successful, along with the spiritual yearning that all people feel, coalesce into what we call Religion. Of course it's a bit more complicated than this, but seeing as this is only a comment on a RU-vid reaction, I'm trying for brevity. This resulting religion is not in and of itself evil. It is simply a tool that cultures throughout history have used to survive and even thrive. Any system of thought or belief can be high jacked towards self-serving or tyrannical ends. Religion is certainly not alone in this.

29:49 Paul isn’t breaking up. He really meant he would love her as long as he breaths. Chani is his official concubine but his true wife. Irulan will be his official wife and nothing else. In the books the Fremen were used to guys have multiple wives out of necessity. So Chani getting bent out of shape is just them trying to push current sensibilities into the movie. For example, by Paul defeating Jamis he inherited his wife Harah, his children and his property. Because of his love for Chani, Paul never exercise any marital privileges with her. This subplot is left out of the 1984 and 2024 adaptations. In the 2000 SYFY adaptation you actually see Harah interact with Paul, Jessica and his sister Alia.
