You have to mention which Punisher this is- there was a dolph Lungren one in the 90s, the Netflix series, and some other one I didn’t pay attention to. It ain’t even in the MCU 😂😂😂 can’t identify those half-faces here. One looks like John Cena 😅

Your explanation in the end is what the 1989 The Punisher was, it is still low budget movie, Marvel did poorly with superhero movies, when DC had Batman 1989 . 1986 version The Punisher just appears killing mobster, his cop fried after him and his familys death is shown as flashbacks .

Thomas Jane is an underrated actor who doesn't get nearly enough credit for his talent. He not only did a good job playing the punisher, but he also voiced him in the video game. So quite literally anytime i read a punisher comic, i hear Thomas Jane's voice when the punisher speaks

The Punisher’s original comic origin is that he wasn’t an FBI agent but a retired but decorated U.S. Marine. One day when he and his wife and 2 kids are at Central Park for a picnic they witness a mob execution. In order to make sure there are no witnesses they shoot Frank and his family, but miraculously he survived. The cops wouldn’t help him because they were in the pocket of the mob, so when Frank heads home to mourn his family the mob blows up his house trying to kill him but they fail. Enraged that the fact that the system had failed him and his family, and that no one was going to get justice for him or his family. He decided to take matters into his own hands by killing the mobsters who killed his family and the cops who covered for them. He then dedicated his life to going after the criminals who the system wouldn’t touch. He became The Punisher.

The thing I love about this version of Punisher is just how somber the ending is, there’s no fanfare, no victorious feeling, he succeeds in punishing the Saints, and then goes to video game himself. I think the line about good memories saving your life works really well for a character whose worst memories are what define him the whole movie. The long zoom at the end of the movie, no music, just monologue and he puts his head down at the end of the shot. As if to say, there’s nothing to be proud of or happy about here, because there isn’t. The world is dirty and sometimes for Justice to really be done, someone has to get dirty, and that shouldn’t be necessary or celebrated. Glad you watched this one! Thank you for a great reaction as always!

The Punisher is based on a series of Charles Bronson movies called Death Wish. The reason why Marvel created this character was so that they could show people that their main Heroes wasn’t violent. An activist group was going after Marvel back in the eighties claiming that their comics were to graphic. And their characters were violent. One of the writers wanted to create a character that was supposed to be super violent and was only to be in one issue to show that the main character was not really violent. At that time there was The Death Wish movies these movies were considered to be the most violent movies of the time staring Charles Bronson. The idea was to have The Punisher show up in the comic have a quick fight with the hero and then have a change of heart after the fight over weather he should kill the villain. This obviously backfired when Marvel received lots of request from readers to bring the character back.

The Punisher is inspired by a fictional character called "The Executioner," a Vietnam vet (Mack Bolan) who lost what remained of his family to the Mafia, and he began a war against the Mafia. While the original writer penned 37 novels for the character, it apparently has gone on to where there have been hundreds of novels printed. Near as I can tell, this novel series was also an inspiration for concepts like "Lethal Weapon," which was probably also inspired by a 1973 book / 1974 movie called "The Super Cops," which launched edgy buddy cop shows like "Starsky & Hutch" in '75 (as opposed to by-the-book shows like "Dragnet" or "Adam-12"). "Serpico" is a classic early movie ('73) in this "edgy cop drama" vein.

I think the reason why it is rated lower than you thought Mary. Is because of the difficult mix of how the Punisher sets about his revenge. I understand what the director was going for, and it is clever. But the Punisher is a character who would straight out kill the bad guys! Him “punishing” people is what he learns to do! I believe the prop master screwed up and left the real knife in. When I found out about that then rewatched how Kevin Nash just took that like it was nothing, amazing

They forgot to swap out the knives, I believe. Thomas Jane apologized, and Kevin Nash just asked for a case of beer if I remember the story correctly.
@Blackflame24
@Blackflame24 4 дня назад
Yep. They had a rubber bladed butterfly knife so Thomas could practice with it without cutting himself. They forgot to swap the real one with the prop knife during the fight and Kevin accidentally got stabbed. He was a good sport about it though and knew it was an accident. Case of beer later and all was forgiven! Lol

The Russian is criminally underserved in this. He is one of the funniest Punisher villains. He gets his head chopped off, then has Frankenstein-esque surgery which leads him to develop massive tits ! The 80s Dolph Lundgren one is well watchable also.

I’ll always love this movie and Thomas Jane’s portrayal, even though they didn’t let him make the type of R Rated Punisher movie he originally wanted. I never wanted anyone else as Punisher, though I have accepted Jon Bernthal when he debuted; he instantly crushed the role and has been amazing since.

Fun Fact: In the comics, the Punisher first appeared trying to assassinate Spiderman under the assumption that Spiderman had went rogue. The writers added a touch to him by showing his outrage when he found out Spiderman wasn't rogue. Which showed what kind of character he was and the rest is becoming history.

I've always enjoyed this movie, and The Punisher as a character. He has always been a darker and more realistic character because he is not a superhero, but a man who had to become the best at delivering justice/vengeance against the worst of the worst. There is an extended edition of this film that fills in some gaps in knowledge and there is also a short film entitled The Punisher: Dirty Laundry also starring Thomas Jane (the same actor). Nearly all the stunts were practical in this film as well, even the flaming man flying through the air during the family reunion massacre, which just doesn't happen in today's movies.

The "Where's Waldo" looking guy is called The Russian, played by Kevin Nash. Also in the scene where Thomas Jane stabbed The Russian, he accidentally grabbed a real knife instead of the prop. Kevin Nash stayed in character and didn't flinch when he was stabbed. It wasn't until the called "CUT" that Nash said they accidentally used the wrong knife. He laughed it off while everyone else was concerned for him, and Nash just asked that they bring him some beer to his trailer.

It actually was supposed to be filmed in a bigger city up North. But Travolta didn't want to commute. It also one of Seethers best songs ever featuring Amy Lee. (The songs objectively much better than the movie and was Waaay more popular than the movie.) I always love watching this movie. Being very familiar with Tampa there's several notable spots I recognize from filming. Unfortunately a few of them, including Frank's loft apartment are gone now.

The giant Russian in the Waldo shirt is pro wrestler Kevin Nash. In the scene where he gets stabbed, Thomas Jane actually stabbed him because the prop knife malfunctioned. Kevin took it like a pro, pulled it out, went to the hospital, and was back next day filming. So the next time you think pro wrestling is all fake, remember Kevin Nash. FYI Nash and Jane are still good friends to this day, he knew it was an accident.

Fun Fact: Punisher lore goes much deeper and further back than just his family being killed by mobsters. Frank Castle is a deeply disturbed individual, someone who was a little TOO good and TOO comfortable with being a soldier. He was in several wars and had seen some very messed up things, along with that saw the worst sides of terrorists, governments, police, civilians, criminals, he literally had seen the worst sides of humanity EVERYWHERE. Problem was he wasnt someone who had PTSD.......he was someone who struggled to confirm to normal life, someone who was too adapted to war. Frank Castle was a Full Glass Of Water just BEGGING for a reason to spill out. The mobsters gave him his dark purpose back in life......at the cost of his loved ones. He is the pinnacle of anti heroes. No one tops The Punisher when it comes to a hero that you SHOULDNT be rooting for.

There was a storyline that was deleted but available in the extended cut. It shows that Frank's partner in the FBI was a gambler and in debt. To pay off that debt, he tells the Cuban brothers everything about Castle. They, in turn, hand that information over to the Saints. That's how they knew everything about Frank and where he was. In the end, that partner kills himself because of the guilt.

Thomas Jane was the 2nd actor to play The Punisher in live action . The 1st was Dolph Lundgren in the 1989 Punisher movie making it the also the 1st R rated Marvel movie. The third actor to play the character was Ray Stevenson ( Ahsoka series) in Punisher: War Zone 2008; 3 years before playing Volstagg one of the warriors three in the MCU THOR films. Actor Jon Bernthal from The Walking Dead also played the character in DareDevil live action series before The Punisher 2017 series which is kind of funny because TWD actor Norman Reedus voiced the Punisher in 2013 animated movie Iron-Man: Rise of Technovore.
