As a gen 2 Griso owner your assessment is spot on. The triple espresso power rush above 5000 arps is quite satisfying. The Guzzi big block w/open pipes sounds like a muscle car. This is a bike with a soul, and it lets you know it’s alive.

Moto Guzzi have been running the experiment of "what if a Harley Davidson was made by an Italian company" for a while now, so it's no wonder you've fallen in love with the Griso. Hopefully you're trading in the Ducati in the time honored tradition of being right before it's due for a Desmo service.

The guzzi is properly engineered...the cylinders out in the cooling breeze Not a v twin bilge pump pushed into duty as a motorcycle engine...Harley choosing to mount that engine as it did....lead to all manner of cooling and thermal issues specifically the rear cylinder...HD SUCKS!! Moto guzzi rocks!

@@rleerm HD genius is marketing.. And tapping into that pro America bigotry... It's history is clear...the needed a motor. Bought rights to a v twin bilge pump off great lakes!... They should have oriented like moto guzzi with cylinders out in the cooling air...but I bet they were not keen on developing a shaft drive to work with a motor oriented in that fashion.... Would be very inefficient to orient engine to prioritize the cooling of the engine....and still try to have cheaper chain drive...

I bought a last year red Griso for half price at a local NorCali dealer at just under 8k. They were doing their best to get rid of the last 5 Griso's. This is a tough bike to own. The ergonomics are for 5'8" riders and below. I was at around 6ft and your knees are VERY far forward and you have to lean forward so it feels like you are cramped. Even more than a sport bike. Although that is an issue, this is an awesome bike.. I road the R9T and this bike while trying to decide between the 2. The R9T is better, handling better, ergo's better, power the same. But the sound is much better than the T. I wanted a bike without rider aide's, etc, After starting the bike and giving it a short rev I realized this was akin to sitting in my 1970's V8 Chevy with Glasspacks and saying this is why I wanted a bike like this. No rider aid's, no ABS, etc. I actually went to the dealer which sold both BMW and Guzzi with the intent of buying a bike without the aides, I just wanted to experience riding when I was a little younger.. The price difference at the time was 8k. I own a R1200RT and know everything about that motor. It is a great motor but the Griso has twice the character. I would reco this bike but it's an occasional bike, not a commuter. I ride it to just remind myself how it used to feel to ride a 1980's high HP bike which is why I choose it over the T. Get the red, not the silver. This is a great bike with a great transmission. If you are coming from a HD bike it will be much better, if you compare this to a Japan bike, it might be a little different but forget what he is trying to say about comparing it to a Kawi, that doesn't make sense. This will embarrass a HD and in the twisties on 128 in Norcal it will keep up with metrics with more HP once you get used to it. I regularly keep up with these bikes through the twisties and keep up during the straights. He's right about putting the new motor into a Griso, just fix the ergo's. If you ride most of the V7 variants they scrape at 15 degrees or less. It's like riding a HD, you can't get aggressive or you will kill yourself, the Griso is a lean all day moto and although I hate the ergo's it is a much better moto than the perceived competition.. Is there competition, not really, I keep searching for a competitive bike but none have come along...and yes I launch the bike, front wheel comes up, the revving guys at lights just decide that was a dumb idea, don't rev a Griso again :). What is Olive Garden. Is that some coffee house or something, nothing I do. See you at the light.

Spite continually brings up the MT-01. He would definitely like a Buell XB12 as a holdover until the Yamaha is importable. Chunky, stumpy, little naked bike with a torquy air-cooled cruiser V-twin! All torque all the time. And it'll make fantastic noises and be that quirky, weird thing that stands out. Spite's gotta get a 1200 Lightning on the channel. It'll be way more up his alley than the XB9 he rode on Yammie's channel.

God I want a 1200 Griso so badly now! I'm so hyped things worked out the way it did when I probably mentioned the Griso a half dozen times after you had just made the Discord! I will say definitely check out the aftermarket seats I'm not sure who makes it but there's this one gorgeous and plush brown leather one I have seen on a number of Griso that have come up for sale.

You're probably thinking of the brown leather seat fitted to the green 'Tenni' SE model. They were available quite cheap a few years ago. No idea why. The Tenni seat is actually the same pattern as the 1100 seat. The stock 'Regular' 1200 seat is a bit narrower. Corbin make a very nice seat for them. I have both a Corbin and a seat made locally by a bloke in Goulburn NSW, (Australia). Both are excellent and to my mind superior to the stock seat. I did have a 'Russel Day Long' at one point but it was so eye-hurtingly ugly I couldn't bear keeping it on. I sold it to some random, blind, nutter back in the US. I think he loves it!😅

I bloody love my 2014 8V SE (same grey paintwork you’ve just reviewed). Really good review and I agree with all your comments. Don’t worry about cooling. I’m in West Aus where its gets over 35 deg C often, and I’ve never had an issue with overheating. The 3+ L of oil, massive oil cooler and those sideways heads keeps it plenty cool even when stationary. The cramped lower section was sorted with some Knight Design 50mm lowered rests and it made a huge difference. I have the same issue with the front brakes, and I suspect could be sorted with better pads. The Griso is easy to work on too, as long as you don’t mind changing 3 types of oil. Valve clearances can be done in an hour or even less if you know what you’re doing. These are getting hard to find. In Aus right now there’s only 4 for sale, and the later Gen 2’s are holding their value. Please please Moto Guzzi, bring us a Gen-3 with the Mandello plant. That would look awesome, and meet the stringent Euro standards I’m thinking. Great review and Chanel mate. Love it.

I had one for you thirteen years and I miss every day!!

Just a few notes to consider: -I've been advised to keep rpm above 4k to spare the cardan linkages. These are note cheap to replace when worn out. -Check if the engine is rollerised. The cam coating are prone to wear and this mod is a must. -Aftermarket exhausts exept the Mistral high oval seems to reduce low and midrange. Add the stock airfilter without snorkel and Beetle mapping is the best you could wish for. -The instrument panel does not seem to be waterproof. I have the Griso cupracer front, bottom and seat fairing, cardan license plate holder +led indicators and bar end mirrors for cosmetics and that's about everything one could do with the Griso. Enjoy!
@peterroper617
@peterroper617 9 месяцев назад
No need to keep the engine speed above 4K although it will be a bit gutless below that with the last factory map. The earlier factory maps were awful. The Hookes couplings, (Crosses.) for the shaft are inexpensive and readily available. As I mentioned before the changeover point from flat to roller engines was mid 2012. Any '13 plated bike will have rollers ex-factory.

Welcome to the Guzzi Family (I’m the proud owner of a 2017 V7III Racer w/ almost 12,000mi)!! I thought a Moto Guzzi might be a good fit for you because the brand’s history is essentially the ‘Italian’ Harley. And the Griso is like the precursor to a Sportster S that is air+oil cooled (rather than being water cooled). I wouldn’t worry too much about engine heat because the cylinders are in front of your legs & body (rather than under your crotch) and they stick out in the wind getting ample airflow.

I agree with your opinion regarding which side you want to look at when the bike is parked. I had a BMW that had a similar situation. It seems that some manufacturers put the exhaust on the down side/kickstand. Maybe it's done this way to prevent people getting burned on the pipes after first parking?

One of my most memorable rides was borrowing a friend's V11 LeMans for a ride, a couple of decades ago now. I have LONG wished the 8-valve (quattrovalvole is the term for 4 valves per cylinder, I think...) CARC platform could have made a V12 LeMans. I have a cunning plan for making one out of a Breva or Norge with some Griso bits... but ever since the V100 platform arrived, I have wanted a Mandello. A liquid-cooled V100 Griso would be highly interesting, as well... shorter engine, longer swingarm, and the good looking right side... those Mandello wheels... pared down lighter with a single seat tail, no active aero, and either no fairing or a new version of the old-school LeMans bullet fairing around a circular headlight. $12-13K, under the base price of the Mandello. That would make Diavel 1260S a moot point in my book, as well as any BMW R-NineT or R12 rumored to be coming out.

This is my bike, good to see this review. This bike checks all the boxes for me, phenomenal torque, more than enough power, glorious roaring 90 degree V-twin exhaust note, comfortable seat, and unique aesthetics. I love my Griso but the clutch has a bit of an issue with dragging sometimes while i'm stopped at traffic lights, but the motor is strong enough to not stall on me at least. Just be aware that it is a common problem for the bolt that holds the shifter lever may snap, it happened to me, so maybe order the part in advance so that you can easily fix that. Now that it's yours be sure to give the pipes some attention with metal polish, mine started off that dirty and now they're the glorious silver they should be after just 90 minutes with Autosol, fine grit sandpaper and a buffing drill bit followed by a WD-40 wipe-down. With relation to the transverse/longitudinal debate. The correct topology is with relation to the crankshaft direction, so this motor as well as the boxers in Honda (Goldwing & Valkyrie) and BMW and Triumph Rocket 3 are all longitudinal (parallel with direction of travel), almost all other motorcycles are transverse with the crankshaft running perpendicular with the direction of travel. People just get confused with V-twins because the layout of the cylinders isn't side-by-side like other transverse crankshaft engines, it's not exactly intuitive that a parallel twin and V-twin are both transverse. My dream bike is also the MT-01, they are unfortunately super rare in my country but I found one available at the beginning of this year, and while I was getting my financing paperwork they sold it literally the day before I went back to them ready to sign the papers (asshole employers took their time giving me my payslips needed to apply), so then when I found the Griso for sale I considered it a fair alternative at the price point without going into the territory of a Triumph Rocket 3 or a Honda Valkyrie 1800 which are double to triple the cost.

The clutch dragging can be addressed easily by adjusting the length of the plunger that bears on the piston of the master cylinder.
@calvinlondt3037
@calvinlondt3037 9 месяцев назад
@@peterroper617 I will try look into that, thank you, it would likely be a much cheaper fix as it's not as tucked away as what i think is causing it. My suspicion is actually the slave cylinder seal may be slightly compromised, the pressure is intermittent, so sometimes the clutch behaves perfectly, sometimes it drags slightly and other days it drags so hard I have to kill the engine, switch into neutral then restart. I've found that I can jerk the clutch into disengaging by rear braking harshly while the clutch is pulled in, and I have to rev match downshifts as if i'm clutchless shifting otherwise it won't change gears.

@peterroper617
@peterroper617 9 месяцев назад
@@calvinlondt3037 If the problem is intermittent it is almost certainly the bore and seals of the MASTER cylinder that are the source of the problem. All the CARC bikes, (And the V11's.) are murder on their clutch fluid and if it isn't changed every service or yearly it's degradation will kill the seals and pit the bore. Luckily with the CARC series bikes the clutch bleed is remote, the braided steel line with a bleed nipple at the left hand frame rail under the seat is the bleed point. Purchase a one-way bleeder valve off the bay of fleas and use it in conjunction with the bleed line and clearing out the old fluid is literally a five minute job! If your master cylinder bore is OK then simply rebuilding it will cure the problem. If the bore is damaged? Sleeving or replacement is the way to go.

@calvinlondt3037 9 месяцев назад
@@peterroper617 i've bled the clutch fluid with my vacuum bleeder about 3 times in the space of a month before i concluded that the fluid wasn't the issue. I think because the previous owner didn't ride it often it didn't get the necessary annual service, or maybe the guy before him. I've also found the clutch pull is quite heavy, would that also be caused by the master cylinder?

I had to take my 1" peg drops off because I kept locking up the rear wheel. Putting a set of flat pegs, getting off the bike more often during 500-800 mile days and putting a sheepskin seat cover on made all the difference. To speed up the steerage I dropped the triple clamps on the forks to the fifth line on the forks. As to looking like the BMW R9T the Griso is 7 years older. I ended up putting the 1" drop pegs on my V11 Lemans Rosso Corsa which made all the difference in the world because I'm an old rider (presently 70).

Very cool. I love a Moto Guzzi. So unique & different. It's a cliche but it's all about that unique character.

I love my gen-2 Griso. It has the retro cues I like including spoked wheels, round headlight, air-cooled engine. But it’s modern at the same time. Plus it has beefier proportions than a Bonnie, R9T or V7. Suits my 6 foot frame much better than my Bonnie SE and certainly pulls my weight down the road much quicker. I agree that Guzzi would have a hit with a modern version. Imagine a naked Mandello with spoked wheels and a single roundish headlight.

I don't even see that stuff as "retro". It just has great style. But I'm stuck in the 70s time warp where one of my first loves was an original Z900. All my favourite bikes I owned were air cooled and unsophisticated but they had gobs of character modern bikes cannot hold a candle to.

Living in Australia ridden Guzzi's in that kind of heat on numerous occasions, can be prone to leaning out a bit at idle after extended sitting in traffic (i.e. hours not minutes) otherwise no problem and it's likely the fuel injection will start cutting a cylinder before anything gets dangerous for the motor (Ducati does the same).

The handling on this and the new mandello...is quicker than anticipated due to the fact.." every motorcycle is a system of three gyroscopes...and their relationship to each other... On guzzi ..one gyroscope ( crank shaft )spins at right angles to the other two! This makes for great agility...but instability if you lock either wheel. It's why j live motoguzzi and bmw...it's also why the goldwing is so easy handling despite its mass

I had a Moto Guzzi Mk V 1000 in 1989, sold it because I was speeding too much and cruising at over 100mph all the time. I have very fond memories and I wish I had not sold it now.

I just bought a 2023 v7 850 and love it so far. Its a great do it all bike. I think it would be sweet if they did an 8 valve head for the 850's with like 75-80hp.

The V100 has its swingarm on the other side because the driveline is different. There is a counter rotating wet clutch geared to the gearbox input shaft primaries so the transmission spins 'The opposite way'. The simple engineering solution was to transpose the driveshaft and bevelbox to the other side of the machine. BMW I'd the same with their uglier version of the same machine. Engineering, not cosmetics.

I'm super bias since I got into riding around this time, but am a big fan of most 20teens motorcycles because on the front half they weren't unbelievably expensive, have all those wonderful performance pieces from fuel injection, we're not desecrated by euro5, and did not have loads and loads of useless features.

The Griso has a wheelbase of 1554 mm. That is actually 53 mm less than the nimble Ducati Desert X with its sporty 1607 mm- Go figure 🤔. The Griso looks great.
