I can say for sure I will miss the C4. I am seriously considering adding one to my fleet as soon as I can, and your videos sure did encourage that decision! I also got to borrow a coworker's Disco 2 with a manual diesel while I was living in England. It was a great drive, but the headlights didn't work. The trip to buy my mini took longer than expected and I had to hardwire one of the headlights on just to get home that night.

Sold my '13 GT stang for a '89 convertible vette with the ZF manual. Clean, 50k miles. Drove it 1600 mi back home. No issues, its honestly a vibe. Going from a 450hp car to a 240hp honestly does not feel different because of how torquey the L98 is and the light body. No regrets. Plus 10K more in my bank account. Do it, there will be less of these for sale as time goes on.

Many people often forget about the Camel Trophy which actually used Discovery 1 and 2 vehicles and put them through some of the worst off road conditions possible. So if at all, this will make a great trail rig and you can take care of the known issues preemptively since you know all of them. I will miss the C4. My fav Corvette.

I do think this is a cool vehicle. I remember climbing into the back seat of a brand new one at a car show and how I jammed my hip into the rear wheel arch because it was just so awkward to step up into. I love how this is just gonna be your run of the mill everyday get around town winter vehicle that you immediately plan to modify and turn into an overlander! I would have said the same thing when I was younger. Have fun with it. I always loved the Defender 90's.

I understand the draw bro. I do. But I learned my lesson on my second “reliable” LR4 that ended up costing me about 20k for 1.5 years of ownership. And it still had issues that not even the best Land Rover shop in Denver could figure out. Doesn’t matter how nice a vehicle is on the trail if you end up being too scared of braking down on it to ever take it out.

So, my gf used to have an lx450, and while it was phenomenal off-road,I hated driving it. Aside from being sluggish, which is fine, it was one of the most uncomfortable vehicles I've driven in long term. The trans tunnel is so recessed, it cuts into drivers foot well, and forces the gas pedal over about where the brake should be. So you end up riding with your hips twisted to the left. Seats were also meh, and couldn't adjust far enough back.

Mine has 460 thousand kilometres on it and has not once broken down. There's a very good reason why people have issues with them, they're sophisticated for their time and most don't know how to maintain them. For example, the manual transmission has an oil pump pressurised lubrication system which uses automatic transmission fluid. Most failures are caused from incorrect fluid. They're still extremely capable in standard form and with correct knowledge and maintenance are extreme value.

Do the preventative maintenance for known issues, and it will be your favorite vehicle you’ve ever owned. I have an ‘03, & immediately put in a Tom Woods front driveshaft, 180 degree inline T-stat, fan/fan clutch mod, & it already had the 3 amigos mod done by PO. That’s ~$1,000 and eliminates your catastrophic failures. Keep her cool and engine problems are avoided. Yours has sunroofs, so probably need to check the drain for clogging so you don’t lose your headliner. Enjoy!

I had a 2000 4.0 and it was a reliable and great truck. Bought it when 3 years old and was good for 9 years. Yes it did need head gasket about 180k kms, 3 amigos got fixed. You do need to keep an eye on double cardon on front drive shaft but with regular maintenance they were pretty good. 2" lift and 31s and put 2004 cdl on they work well off road.

Indeed sad to see the C4 go... in my twenties I wish I had gotten an old '78-81 C3 with the SBC 350, that was the mid-2000's, because my dad owned a white C3 from '81 to '84 just before I was born. I didn't, I went for a 2000 Maxima SE instead and got sucked into Nissan VQ's. Been driving VQ's since 2006, but sometimes I think about that fun Chevy 350 path I didn't take. 😐

The disco 2 is a pretty darn potent off roader right out of the box. Toss some proper knobby tires on it and you can go almost anywhere anything else can go with no further modifications. And without going huge and heavy on the tires and wheels, the rest of the driveline needs minimal beefing up. It’s just all the other body related breakage you have to deal with like all the interior plastics and fabrics.

My wife was never really into cars before she met me. But she had always wanted a Discovery 2. So naturally when she wanted a cool car to drive and enjoy it was the top on her list. Knowing they were unreliable I let her get one and years later she still loves it. Somehow it's still going strong with 150k+. I have done a bunch of maintenance and the back 1/3 of the frame had to be replaced due to rust. But otherwise it's holding up pretty well .

Have you ever considered buying a Yugo or a Trabant? Those are 2 cars that are so horrific that you almost have to get one for the sheer shock value, even if they just sit in your garage and never go anywhere, it’s still a great conversation piece when you have friends over. They’re also both so inexpensive that they won’t break you financially.

Had a buddy of mine who owned an 02’ Kalahari Edition D2. (1 of 350 special editions made). He loved that thing to death and that thing would turn heads everywhere. He would go as far as to make fun of me for being a Jeep guy and we’d have our little competitions and butt heads off road. The thing ate head gaskets for breakfast. 2 engine overhauls, 3 different overheating-related breakdowns on Colorado trails, melted parking brake cables, almost an engine fire under the hood, multiple flipouts and cursing in the garage, and a total of 6 years of headache later, he sold it off. Turned a full 180 and now he turned into a Jeep guy just like me and owns a Jeep JKU. 😂 Good luck with the Disco. …seriously 👀 I know some serious hardcore LR fans who eventually turned their backs.

Discos are awesome. They are quite special to drive. Nothing quite like it. Front and rear solid axles, stadium seating, mad room inside for camping gear and only a 100 inch wheel base. If your block is not cracked, it will be dead reliable after you sort it. You must love re-engineering things though. Gotta do the CDL mod though - transforms the off road capabilities.

havent looked at the video yet but that silhouette? guessing a Land Rover. probably Discovery 1 or 2 ok now ive seen it, i really dont get the issue with the Discovery 2. yes the chassis rot is an issue (or they are in our climate) and many of the 'options' mentioned(heated windscreens etc) are pretty much market specific (they never had them here until Land Rover was under Ford ownership as they had the Patent for the 'quickclear' heated screen) the mechanical issues are DEFINITELY market specific. its near impossible to find the discovery 1 or 2 with a V8. they exist but theyre rare. 300TDi was the common engine, and auto transmissions are rare too. so in some ways, the American theory that theyre unreliable are, in part, due to the fact that they mostly seem to insist on having large capacity petrol engines instead of a 2.5 turbodiesel which, apart from changing timing belts, is almost indestructible, from experience. i also believe the 4.0 V8 was a BMW engine, not the Buick based Rover engine. also pretty certain that the centre diff lock was also always operational here.
