From the archives -- I'M A TEAPOT by Geisha Girls, 1983 - the first music video I ever directed. It was featured on Channel 4's The Tube one memorable night in 1983 when Frankie's Relax was first screened, then us, followed by Queen's Radio Gaga -- three very different debut videos which proved how eclectic the music scene still was then. I believe the other bands did quite well after - our vinyl single eventually reached no. 10 in the Indie Chart in 1984 but we'd run out of steam a year later.
That was quite a night -- 4 hours after the girls were broadcast live from Newcastle we were performing on stage at Reading University -- great memories...
The line-up was Anne De Lima, Lez Hanibal and Jilly Myhill on vocals, Greg Muden on guitar, Mark Chapman on keyboards, Iain Aird (Sprog) on bass and Kevin Drain on drums. Mark Chapman

That's so awesome! Reminds me of the outside street shown on The Young Ones?! I'm wondering where the band are these days.

I think the Young Ones street is in Bristol - which makes sense that it looks similar as the houses on Eldon Road (Reading) are clad in Bath Stone. Lovely seeing the street in the 80s. And, of course, the song is annoyingly catchy too.

Yes,the Reading University gig was Geisha Girls supporting The Fall.As wellas Caversham by the river, bits were filmed on Eldon Road and Eldon Terrace (road sign clearly visible). At their hexagon gig the band stripped off during "Dancing in the nude".Guitarist Sprog who played the waiter and the soldier was also in Dog Breath and the K 9's.

Yes! This is the stuff! I went out and bought the single after that Tube appearance. 1983 really was THE year for inventive indie pop, and for a brief period the Tube wasn't afraid to take a few chances with the acts it featured. (The B-side was "Hey hey hey")

Didn't Jeremy Jones direct this? I remember him getting a cheque from Channel 4.

Just to be clear, Jeremy kindly put up the money to hire kit so produced and shot the video which I directed. Thanks Jeremy.

@@thokigoo Poor Jeremy is no longer with us. But I think the day he got that royalty cheque was one of the best of his life. We spent a bit of it in the Roebuck in Wokingham drinking lager while watching OMD and Ultravox on the video jukebox.

Hey kids, don't play a mains keyboard in the bath, with 80s electrics it's suicide.

I hope that keyboard wasn't plugged in - or hadn't Health and Safety been invented in 1983?
