@@MadMorph baba yaga is rooted in slavic mythology and folklore, from ogress thru time she become a human female, usualy witch or some kind of sorceress. from a creature or a wich who eat kids to guardian of waters and fountains, think my generation is last generation of slavic kids who were forced to be good or baba yaga will come for you to cook you. also our grandparents trumatised us for life with both baba yaga and water man, so til oday we have irraional anxiety around wells fountains, lakes etc... here is litel about baba yaga.. it also dependes wich part of slavic region we talk, baba jaga is baba roga in croatian.. in Lithuanian and Russian mythology, she was seen as a goddess of regeneration. Furthermore, Baba Yaga was transformed into the terrifying hag in Russian folklore, a witch-like woman who rowed across the air in a mortar and pestle, using the pestle as her oar, and swept the traces of her flight with a broom Baba Yaga appears frequently in Slavic folklore, typically as an elderly female figure with a long, hooked nose and metal teeth. At turns a monstrous witch or a benevolent sorceress depending on the legend, Baba Yaga lives in a house perched atop gigantic chicken legs, surrounded by a fence made of skulls and bones. Baba Yaga, in Slavic folklore, an ogress who steals, cooks, and eats her victims, usually children. A guardian of the fountains of the water of life, she lives with two or three sisters (all known as Baba Yaga) in a forest hut that spins continually on birds' legs. Her fence is topped with human skulls. Etymology The name varies among Slavic languages. In Polish, it's spelt "Baba Jaga," and in Czech and Slovak, "Jeibaba." In the Slovene language, the words became Jaga Baba. The Russians, the Bulgarians and the Ukrainians alike transliterated it as Baba Yaga. Moreover, Baba Yaga's name is formed of two components. Baba (originally a child's name for Babushka) refers to an "older or married lady of lower social status" or simply "grandmother" in the majority of Slavic languages. Yaga (Jaga/Jagusia/Jadzia) is a diminutive variant of Jadwiga, a Slavic given name. However, some etymologists detect a relationship between the word " iaga " and Baltic phrases denoting " strength, force " or "comprehension ". This etymological meaning links Baba Yaga to positive, beneficial forces and implies that the negative names in Slavic languages that are similar to Iaga are later additions. Other etymological theories revolve around words used in Western and Southwestern Bulgaria (eza, enza, endza, iandza). The Western and Eastern Slavic words have evolved to designate bad women, witches, or witch-like beings, implying a "female demon of illness" or " illness." In West and East Slavic folklore, the demonic female entity with this name became a folktale figure and lost her dangerous aspect. Baba Yaga's description Depending on the region, the legend of Baba Yaga will differ. Most of the descriptions are highly similar in that she is an ugly old woman who is fierce or an ogress. Her prominent hooked nose and long teeth, and her long bony legs are among the traits that have been mentioned often. Baba Yaga is exceedingly emaciated and bony, like a skeleton, despite eating as much as ten men. Accordingly, in folk tales, Baba Yaga is frequently depicted as having at least some iron features, such as an iron nose, an iron leg, or iron teeth. Baba Yaga's assistants As is the case throughout myths and folklore, Baba Yaga has at her disposal some assistants. The most distinctive ones are The White Horseman, the Red Horseman, and the Black Horseman. In the tale of "Vasilisa the Fair", she names them as 'My Bright Dawn, My Red Sun, and My Dark Midnight', because they rule dawn, morning or noon, and nightfall. Other devoted servants are represented by three bodiless pairs of hands that emerge from nowhere to carry out her whims. Baba Yaga and her Hut Her house is a cabin hidden deep in the woods, difficult to spot unless a magical thread, feather, or doll points the way. The cabin has its own personality. It can move around and stands on colossal chicken legs. It has eyes in its windows and teeth in its lock. Around the hut is a post fence. The stakes are made of human bones and are topped with skulls with glowing eye sockets that illuminate the woodland. Hungry dogs, wicked geese, swans, or a black cat are frequently seen guarding the cottage. The hut has the ability to spin and move around the woods. It emits a series of blood-curdling screeches. The fate of individuals who visit her house is in their own hands in many tales. Signification and symbolism Attached to the symbolism of regeneration, Baba Yaga is typically represented as the last sheaf of corn in agricultural festivities. Nevertheless, the complexity of Baba Yaga is established by the numerous folktales, illustrations, fables and other oral accounts that have been either lost or appended with other influences, modern or pre-modern. Symbolically, she is associated with the Triune goddes found in other mythologies, usually depicted as personifying the crone aspect. This association reveals her as the goddess of life, Rebirth, the moon, time, cycles, thresholds, and nature. Thereby she can be seen as Mother Earth, too. Baba Yaga is also referred to as The Great Teacher as she guides the soul to the afterlife. She serves as a guardian between the worlds of the living and the dead; therefore, she acts as a psychopomp. She is all-seeing, all-knowing, and all-powerful. Correspondingly she is seen as The Goddess in Russian fairy tales. Another instance for Baba Yaga is her representation as a wild and untamable soul of nature. Moreover, Baba Yaga and the mythical serpent are identical figures in Slavic folklore: what is ascribed to the snake in one iteration is performed by Yaga in another. Nonetheless, in Ukraine, a witch is frequently referred to as a snake. As with a snake, she conceals the springs of living water, copper, silver, and gold, which are the sun's treasures. As a result, she is able to summon either terrible or fine weather at will. Iron is also associated with Baba Yaga and her equivalents. Additionally, Baba Yaga's role as mistress of the forests, birds, and animals has also been considered. Not just beings, but also natural elements, are subservient to her command. She "hisses like a snake," "roars like a beast," and has the ability to transform into various animals, reaching impressive sizes. Consequently, it is said that Baba Yaga has two other sisters, who are also Baba Yagas who live in Her hut. Baba Yaga becomes a Triple Goddess in this fashion, embodying the Virgin, Mother, and Crone. The "Keeper of the Water of Life and Death" is another name for Baba Yaga. A common pattern encountered through myths and folklore is that when a hero is assassinated with a sword or by fire, he or she is sprayed with the Water of Death, which instantly cures all wounds. Then they are bathed in the Water of Life, granting Rebirth. The cottage itself can be interpreted as a symbol as it evokes old totemic rituals or those related to the burial of the dead. Another reference to this idea may be found in her revolving hut, which is surrounded by 12 posts, representing the passage of time through the 12 months of the year. Baba Yaga is also an accomplished weaver, frequently seen at her wheel, which is almost always associated with 'weaving time.' Conclusion With this in mind, it is reasonable to conclude that Baba Yaga was a pagan goddess of fertility who gave birth to all of nature and set cosmic rhythms. If we are to ascribe to Baba Yaga, only the appellative " the goddess of death" would not be sufficient. She synthesises numerous goddesses and archetypes with a dash of witchcraft, which distinguishes her as one-of-a-kind. She is the goddess of duality; she is the goddess of "death and life, Rebirth, senility and fertility, destruction and rejuvenation, villainy and compassion, masculine and feminine." As a result, she serves as the intermediary between two universes, also acting as a psychopomp in some instances. Therefore she is the gods' intermediary instrument - neither divine nor human. As a result, she is a mother but not a wife, a mother of beasts but not of humans, and so forth. As with every mediator, she possesses no free will of her own; instead, she transfers it to humans, though not to everyone, but to the chosen...

3:03 Yes, birds can get used to scarecrows. That’s why you move them to a new spot or switch them out with another scarecrow. People would dress them in their old clothes so they’d smell human. (My family had a farm.) 😅 I like it in scary films when they show birds landing on scarecrows to build suspense because if birds are landing on the scarecrow that means it hasn’t been moved in a long time…

Baba yaga is really old folklore. She was a goddes who lost her position and turn into a witch/sorcerer. She look like an old woman with a blueish nose to cath her prey and iron teeth to eat them! Because her responsability was to safeguard the wordl of the living from the spirit one, one of her legs is all bone. Instead of a broom, she uses a giant mortar to travel, apart from her chicken legged house.

My mom bottle raised goats when I was a kid. Goats take a LOT of land with a LOT of overgrown grass and shrubbery because they eat EVERYTHING. We had 4 and they stripped all the greenery down to the dirt. Eventually had to sell them when they started eating the bark off the trees

Why didn't you just keep them penned in and feed them goat feed and hay? Though, I definitely understand that it could be a struggle. I feel like people often forget that deer will do a similar thing unless wolves and other predators keep the population down.

I've heard of people rotating their goats. Have them fenced in one area till they eat the grass short, and then put them in a new spot to allow the old patch to regrow. Cycle through 3-4 and you never have to buy feed and the land isn't harmed 😊

But instead of the wicked mother and step sisters being cast out. The character that would be Cinderella kindly helps baba jaga and follows her instructions. She's given a token of gratitude that from what I remember baba jaga was going to use to take the soul of the Cinderella character but instead is instructed to give to her step mother and sisters because baba jaga like the little girl and burned the stepmother and sisters instead. Good news about the misshapen produce: it doesn't get thrown away! It gets used to make juice, jam, chutney, tinned fruit and veg, and other sorts of things where the appearance of the fruit itself doesn't matter. A lof of the time, misshapen fruit *can't* be sent to the supermarkets, because being an irregular shape or damaged will make it spoil faster, and the spoilage can spread to the rest of the batch. So you're still getting use out of "ugly fruit" every time you have strawberry jam on your scones, or a glass of orange squash, or a pack of frozen mixed veg.

Since Baba Jaga is Slavic Im assuming the gane is set around 18th century Russia. In the 18th century no one was allowed to be smarter than the King/Tzar, (George in UK, Peter the Great in Russia), especially peasents/serfs. Serfs were uneducated so if one was suspected of being smart or unusually into herblore etc (mostly female in the Catholic West and mostly male in the Orthodox West) they were deemed a witch/sorcerer. Also I agree with you re the graphics. Sure, aim to make them great in the next gen specs, but don't be afraid to add your unique style to the game that you (game creators) are making. Its said that stylized games are mostly indie and most AAA games arent so unique anymore,

My knowledge about witches and witch accusations are mostly about western Europe (if you split it in two equal halves), so it may differ, but the main witch accusations were around the late Middle Ages (1400s?) into the Renaissance and onwards. 17th century was bad with it. In the earlier and mid-medieval period, where we usually think the biggest witch craze should be, there was a slightly different view of things. Necromancy was the big no-no, speaking to the dead and all that. The best place to get medical care at the time was with religious institutions, yes. But if there wasn't a hospital (the origin of them and mostly in bigger settlements and cities if I'm not wrong) or a monastery or nunnery about, you had to have village healers to help you. Honestly, as long as you claimed all your knowledge and skill came from God, you were probably pretty safe. The reason religious people had the trained know-how was because they were in places of learning at the time and they had the texts to read about this, both the earlier texts (Roman, Greek and Arabic) as well as more contemporary, which might have in many cases just been the older texts but updated and continued. That's why humour theory persisted for so long. But yeah, don't know how different or similar it was in the eastern half of Europe and Russia during the ca 1400-1800s. I would love to listen to a deep dive into this subject.

I participated in a playtest for this game and was so intrigued! The premise and aesthetic had my attention immediately, that bird-leg cabin instantly caught my attention looking like concept art from the first Alan Wake, and this being a new perspective of Baba Yaga than I’d seen made it really interesting! Also, who doesn’t enjoy some spooky witchy vibes? 💜

2024 real MadMorph voice reveal. Nice. XD This looks like a cozy game, indeed. Just added it to Follow on steam. Think I heard about it some time ago but had forgotten about it til now. :) 'N I was thinkin about that the other day when we were at a store; how all the fruits and vegetables look 'perfect' but elsewhere they may sell others that aren't 'nicely shaped' at a discount; like they're still good but don't look nice. Dunno if there's any little stores around here like that, though. Or then ofc they may toss them because people won't buy them...

That period of time still exists. This is no exaggeration--when I worked at a medical office straight out of college (2013) I ended up doing all of the IT work in addition to medical billing/office management. All of the medical assistants were super religious. I had a really good day once and fixed two printers and de-fragged one of the computers so the slow-down issues stopped. One of the MAs literally ran into the senior manager's office and wanted me fired for 'witchcraft.' Keep it classy, America.

"you could be the most accomplished woman and smart" actually that's unironically what got you accused and dunked XD edit: also Morph I have chickens if you wanted an answer to your question "do roosters have the red things on their head?" Interestingly enough, hens can have combs too, but some males have little dangly bits under their chin area. What actually dictates the red comb length on their head is the breed. And usually, the chickens with longer red combs are found to be in warmer climates. Chickens with almost no comb or extremities on their head or face are called "winter hardy" chickens, because during the frigid winter months chickens with combs can experience frostbite because blood flow and circulation leaves everything except the core parts of the body. The same happens with humans our fingers freeze first in frosty climates. It's not a lethal issue for the chicken, but the comb will turn black and fall off and a lot of people just don't want their chickens to suffer. So over time we have bred shorter combed chickens so that everyone is happy.

As much as I like to witness cute little animals, I know too well to not touch them. Wild nature is supposed to stay wild without human interference, or at least as little of it as possible. Some animals won’t recognize their little ones if they scent anything like human. Some animal parents may instead consider you a threat to their offspring and become very violent.
@arat1869
@arat1869 4 месяца назад
the scent thing is a myth to prevent children from touching wildlife. if it was true, animal populations would be incredibly minuscule. humans aren't the only thing capable of leaving smells on animals, predators or the environment can too. animals are way smarter than we give them credit for

Its quite a beautiful game. We have a special crosswalk by our local swan and duck pond. Generations of ducks and swans have crossed it. Seagulls are not allowed to be harmed here either as they are the Queen's bird,( yup Queen Elizabeth liked seagulls i suppose). We have a lot of old areas and theres one that is supposedly haunted and a witch lives there. But as i know because of my ancestry witches were mainly healers using natural ingredients and herbs for syrups,rubs,poltices, foods,etc. Knowing weather changes coming. Different things. There was one man who was accused of witchcraft during the salem witch trials. He was pressed to death. Think of it like a giant stone sandwich😮. It is very interesting to read about.

In the first house you called it a kiln. It's just the stove for heating. The kind I'm used to are cast iron but in Germanic and I guess this is Slavic places you see these wonderful giant clay stoves with decorations and colors baked in.

We have the same goals and wishes haha I also want to live on a lot of land, but still have good internet, and also not be too far from the grocery store and at the same time have land for animals. I actually found this place about 30ish - 40ish minutes away from where I currently live. 5 acres, a little house... and its only 170k I live in california... This is RARE which tells me it must be extremely haunted or something. I look at the listing every day and just dream.

From what I know about Slavic myths, legends and folk tales, they are pretty dark and most creatures or entities that appear in them are to be feared or at the very least not to be trusted. So you're right, Baba Jaga is not a nice witch.
@Painfulldarksoul
@Painfulldarksoul 4 месяца назад
Witches had a bit more respect in Slavic mythology. A great knowledge of the woods and swamps, poison and medicine. Some of the few healers available and not beholden to the tyrannical czar or greedy church(Once it emerged.). You could get eaten, or if you're polite and not naive, you might get advice to become a hero. ... You might still become a hero even when naive, but you also might get eaten, even if you do everything right it might happen. Generally, you listened to them. A new witch... It was good to be wary. Might be better to kill her, but not advisable.
