Awesome and amazing harmonies from the FF! These guys more modern and youthful vocal styles really lend a timeless quality to the arrangements! Love it.
I saw the 70's edition of the Freshmen. They were great and so are you guys. I hope you tour in the South sometime, say in the Carolinas. I'd be there in a heartbeat. Bud
Is there anyone who knows what voicings are being used? In other words, do we have root, 3rd,7th and a melody note, or are the voicings rootless with 3rd, 7th melody note and color tone? Where might I find a sample of this type of voicing and harmonic movement?
Yes, you are right. Of all the versions since the originals (which I was around for), this one was my favorite, so far anyway. I will get to hear the current version at the end of this month, as they are appearing live near me.
The four FRESHMEN "IM ALWAYS CHASING RAINBOWS" TO JOHNNY BARONE FROM JOHNNY L LANCIASONGS PUBLISHING miss you old buddy; hope you' miss you old buddy hope you are right
Bob Flanigan, one of the originals, had full ownership of the group. The group is and has been for some time a corporation. As part of his effort to preserve the legacy of the group, Bob added rules about participation and ownership. One forfeits ownership by ceasing to be active in performing and recording. Then Bob left ownership to the group in his will. A pretty cool act on Flan's part and a great model for others. Caveat: This is my understanding, I cannot verify the facts.
I can't verify the exact details but I can say that yes The Four Freshmen were and still are pioneers in the music industry even beyond their sound. The current configuration of the group includes a music teacher and the group (and their fans) have launched a charitable foundation to help fund music education in schools. www.fourfreshmenmusicfoundation.org/
Chaz, I agree and am really, really enjoying getting these but I really wish there were no color changes - turning their suits to a dirty yellow was not pretty. Will
I wonder how many people are going to find this post now that it has been reported that the Beach Boys are opening up their current 50th anniversary tour with a recording of the Four Freshmen singing this tune.
lol ..... ROTFL ......yep .......LOL again ......yaaaaaaaa .....welll ..... possibly the best vocal arrangement ever !!! This has always been my fav - not an easy one I might add. BTW ....THEY didn't lose track of the melody. It's there! (beautifully) . Some music is not designed to "hit you over the head" - you have to meet it half way and go to it !!! I think they did this arrangement (long ago) for themselves and musicians - Bravo execution ;-)
ohmygod MrManorAvenue.....I really really don't want to be rude, or mean. But honestly, your comment is hilarious. THEY didn't lose track - YOU lost track. This arrangement, this song, and this melody is SO advanced that it is obviously waaaaaaay over your head, and stretched out into advanced creative and artistic areas that are beyond you. Really, I'm not being mean. I'm being accurate. They are SO right on!! Probably mostly just us music majors can truly appreciate the magic and the excellence that is presented here. I think it almost requires a professional ear to "get it". Maybe you should just stick with the Backstreet Boys or something?
Placeseveryone Sorry, it was just my opinion as I said originally. I wasn't maligning the style of the Freshmen. I think we're all entitled to feel as we do, and that's all I was doing was saying I didn't care for their rendition of this particular song. I have many of their records so I believe that speaks for the fact that I like their work in general. No, thanks, the Backstreet Boys are hardly my style.
