Great to see you back!! So very true that this is the WRONG time to start up in this business. I’ve been running just enough to keep the bills paid for the trucking side. Fortunately I’ve got a couple of other small businesses that keep food on the table and a house over my head. Unfortunately not a lot of others out there are as fortunate as I am so I’m trying to run enough to keep this business until the fuel prices come back down. It’s also sad to see all of the equipment out there for sale because of this economy. Stay safe and keep the videos coming!

I wish truckers could come together like these brokers: they corroborated to bring down rates in this worst time, just to counter us with some wiggle room. Hey Load mizer been watching your videos since day one when I started hotshot. Now I moved up to the semi Flatbed and I couldn't be happier the hotshot is dead now so it was time to get out I was doing to much running around for 2 per mile it just wasn't profitable anymore. I been in the semi 1 month and the whole month I been averaging $4-5 per mile and only running 3 states NC, SC And GA and home every other night, on the hotshot I was driving 2000 to 2500 miles a week, now im only driving 1200- 1600 and making double of what I was doing on the hotshot, best decision I ever made.

Video ideas: 1. How to build relationships with brokers to get dedicated routes and better rates. 2. When’s the best time to start expanding your hotshot business. 3. How you target cheaper fuel/ plan routes. 4. Do you use a dispatcher and what benefits do you see as having one? 5. Car hauler or flat bed? 6. Websites/ forums you would use to stay up to date on the industry and what direction it’s headed in. (Lots of controversy on that subject.) 7. How do you like to run? Weekly, bi-weekly, weekends off? And which one have you found to be more feasible for yourself. My authority went active in February and I’ve been steady since. Not every week has been a blow out but I have noticed with better route planning and being a little bit more strategic, it has allowed me to cut my expenses back some rather than hitting the road with whatever load. I learned pretty quickly that a $5K load that takes 5 days isn’t always better than a $3K load that only takes 3 days. I’m obviously new to the industry but have been very careful with how I run in order to stay afloat. I spent a lot of time in the beginning trying to build a direct clientele and it paid off very slightly. I believe that’s one of the main reasons I’m not drowning right now. I believe those video ideas would benefit a lot due to not being able to find a lot of that information solely for hotshot set ups. Glad to see you back!

good to see you. I passed you not to long ago. PARTS other than fuel are affecting me. My trailer is in the shop. A buddy let me use his Kaufman 53ft trailer. It needed a couple of tires. Stopped in Denton TX at a local tire shop. I will not include the business name because I believe this was an employee issue but they didn't tighten the lug nuts. Got some hours down the road in the mountains and there goes my friends wheels off his trailer and the two brand new 16 ply tires i just bought. over the guardrail to end up who knows where at the bottom of the mountain. long story short it messed up studs, center cap, etc. Ordered the parts to fix it today from etrailer they are on back order until JULY. I need to give his trailer back next week or so when my 8 car is ready.

I am trying to find loads close to home to compare fuel differences in high wind or going up and down mountains. It’s very expensive on getting started just in hotshot. I plan on going semi someday! My big road block with brokers is due to my authority being new. For military brokers I’m still a couple of months short to haul for them. I believe at the end of July doors will open more for us when our authority will be 90 days. So right now I’m getting what I can get without going to a handful of states. I will keep politics out to explain those states. I tell brokers, my authority is new but I’m not, being I’m pushing 50…..LOL! You all stay safe out there and God bless!

Good to see you back! I got my CDL last month and was looking to up my weight capacity by going to a 550 and 22 or 25 GN. The cost and availability of the 40' GN trailers is the real deal breaker - cheaper and easier to buy a 48' flatbed. Then I took my typical non-CDL freight search parameters and checked 40' 20K and semi loads. Here's the results: 18 non-CDL loads, 83 CDL loads and 8057 semi loads. And of course keep in mind that many of the available loads are not profitable to run (non of the non-CDL loads were). But my point is that it just isn't worth the expense of buying a bigger truck and trailer to triple the available loads when I can spend about the same for an older semi and multiply the available loads by 455! So I'm on the hunt. Still running non-CDL freight when I can get a good rate. Been doing far more port loads which I guess most drivers don't take because they can't get a TWIC or they don't like sitting in the queue. That's fine, more for me. Yesterday I took one and was able to put it on my truck's flatbed so I didn't have to drag that 6,600 lb. trailer all day!
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 года назад
That’s where we’re at right now. Doing things we normally wouldn’t do. Be mindful on the semi or any truck purchase at this point. Parts availability will kill a lot of companies this year while they watch their business die because their trucks are in service bays for months waiting on parts.

I’m so out of touch with the freight world at this point it wouldn’t be a very fair review honestly. Lack of parts in both fields are killing small companies right now. The operational cost is still pretty dead on just multiplied by ALOT! I’m willing to bet that on average while semis can gross more per load or week that the money left in the bank account is still pretty comparable. That’s my take on it. I am fortunate to be around 3 states but only one have decent fuel prices in Virginia at 5.40 compared to MD and PA 5.99....... I just started out this month things seem to be going kinda OK but I have very low overhead compared to most guys.... i’ve been watching some of you guys (H.H,H.B and Kendall for the past two years.... don’t quit homie it’s a marathon

Having low overhead is key right now. Everybody’s got a point to where they have to stop the bleeding though. I’ve been there before and I hope to never see it again. Time will tell through this though 👍

Every industry goes through a cleaning periodically. Fuel prices have been very high in the past and those that tough it out, will benefit after Nov 2022 or Nov 2024. Funny thing, when you turn off energy production in America everything goes way up! You are going to find it nearly impossible not to remain nonpolitical if you want to dig in deep to the root cause and solution.
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 года назад
I’ve gone down the rabbit hole. Followed it for years. Came to the conclusion a long time ago that the energy sector dictates most of what goes on in this country. The political side of things is just the sad puppet show to watch while it happens.
@jarretbutenhoff8031
@jarretbutenhoff8031 2 года назад
It’s because our entire way of life depends on the fossil fuel industry from heating ours homes to providing us with electricity. The sad part is, most of these companies have seen record profits over the years and to be honest, that’s all they care about. They don’t care about creating well paying jobs...all they care about is their bottom line. Rather than ramping up production which would lead them to hire more people...they just do stock buy backs to artificially inflate their stock and then jack up their prices. It’s a machine designed for one purpose...maximize profits. And that machine has been in the pockets of these politicians for decades now
@rctjacksonville
@rctjacksonville 2 года назад
@@jarretbutenhoff8031 Ok, you are a little On target, but don't forget of you have a 401K it's making money from their profits. On average over 6.2 million Americans benefit from oil company's profits via their 401K. Over the last decade oil companies have paid out over 194 billion to share holders who have 401K vestiges. I would love to bash them when I hit the pump at near 6 bucks a gallon for fuel, but it's more the responsibility of the current administration's energy policy. Fuel prices are set in the future based on what is going to be not what is because it's not a direct market. Also, tens of millions are made by your neighbors when they day trade the futures markets for oil and then they hire a lawn service instead of mowing themselves. Production is not narrated as much as you think by oil companies, they don't shut down wells as it cost too much. On average a well takes around a million bucks to restart and losses can cost a CEO their job.
@jarretbutenhoff8031
@jarretbutenhoff8031 2 года назад
@@rctjacksonville Don’t get me wrong, for all those people (6.2million) ? who were able to benefit from investing their money in these oil companies and we able to retire with dignity... that’s awesome. That doesn’t sound right to me though especially through a 401k plan. Cuz you have to ask the question, how much money are those employees really investing. I would say maybe 10% of their paycheck depending on how much money they make a year and then as an employee you’re hoping for a company match. Cuz I would imagine that most of the working class people have to worry about paying their bills, like their mortgage, and their electric bill ...oh and don’t forget about gas...therefore, not being able to invest that much money because they need that money to survive. Ya know, whenever I think about investing money, I think about the top players. The people who actually have the money to invest and are able to take the risk. And for all the people (share holders) that are investing their money in these companies are seeing a hella of a return especially when the companies use those record breaking profits to do stock buy backs rather than maybe giving out bonuses or pay raises. As far as the ceo getting the boot...well think about Steve Jobs. He’s a perfect example

The truth is there are too many hotshots that have never driven or knows anything about biz that are a part of the problem. Been driving big rigs since 06 and have some hotshots as well. Everyone can get a dually with personal credit. New hotshoters are taking cheap freight because they have to just to make it to the next week/month. It’s a damn shame. Too many hotshoters not enough freight. You cannot drive down a highway without seeing at least 20 trucks.

Guess I am crazy to wanting to start non-CDL hot shot for oilfield and other avenues as well as hauling cars to getting my own authority. My plan is negotiating directly with customer and get long term contracts instead of trying to use brokers as they are raping people by skimming so much off the top.

Another issue is that some not all but some of these freight brokers are not paying fsc. Some that do, do not pay it all. That fsc is very important these days. I like the lower Midwest simply because that is were the fuel is the cheapest. But I will go outside that zone if the load is paying good enough. Right now it's about keeping the wheels turning!!! But do NOT haul freight that you can not profit from. Sometimes you have to grab a less than desirable load to get you in a better area. Stay away from mountain areas. They are fuel chuggers. Be mindful of windy areas. Wind is worse than weight. Watch your spending habits. Cut back on things if you can. God bless to everyone and keep the wheels turning and you should stay afloat.

I got a question I am a new driver new start up should I register my truck in my business name or my personal name and just add business insurance I opted out of a 40 foot trailer because I hear that could put me over length a few inches in some states and I don’t know which ones they are currently so I bought a 31×5 gooseneck trailer I’m new. I signed up with a factoring company today actually yesterday they sent me a fuel card. I still haven’t registered vehicle yet. I’m postponing putting it on the road till I resigned my current job. Oh yeah I’m already upwards probably 150 K when it’s all done give or take a few thousand lol I do have my clase. I bought a 36K gross vehicle weight Trailer I bought a brand new 23 4 x 4 four-door dodge bighorn truck I believe it shows capability I think it’s 37,000 towing I don’t think you can find the information on dodge sight everything I looked for, didn’t show my vehicle and one similar to mine. I think the 33 maybe towing in 9000 payload I think mines 37 towing in 7000 payload.
