Mosquitos are definitely bad here, especially during rainy periods. I always make sure to wear an organic bug spray when I go outside. I also like to rub lemon balm on my arms and legs. It seems to keep them away for a little bit, and I just have so much of it!

For whatever reason the ones in my garden here in Georgia just don’t care. I’ve rubbed catnip, the citronella plant, basil, lavendar, and lemon balm on me and I still get over 20 bites in like, 15 minutes. I also use a natural bug spray, any recs on what type works for you? I don’t have standing water so I’m just confused as to where they’re breeding and why they’re so darn bad. I’m trying the mosquito dunks in a bucket of water right now… hoping it’ll help. Thanks for the advice!

I am replanting tons. We have had an issue with all the rain in 8b causing almost everything to die off. Ironically my onions are still hanging on. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and all melons, squash and most of my pumpkins gave into powdery mildew. Round 2 of planting. This makes me think next year I will succession plant the same crops all summer long.

For one to shame people for not gardening the way s/he prefers is arrogant. Everybody's resources are different. Starting from seed is less expensive and you have a much larger choice of types and varieties. But one needs the time, space and setup to do it. Starting from transplants takes advantage of the fact that some people enjoy seed starting and has the resources to mass produce. Mass production of plants is necessary for genetic diversity and development of locally adapted varieties.

I'm glad I found another Nc garden channel. My other one I love talks about plants like flowers and bushes. You have been my encouragement and lifesaver though. So much stuff has happened and I didn't even get my beds up yet. But I have some stuff in the ground still.

What is the other one you follow? Always love meeting new NC gardeners! Don't worry, you still have some time! Even if you miss summer plantings, you still have fall!

14:54 Hey! That's a catalpa tree back there! One of my favorite trees that grow around zone 5a near me

Hmm I just looked that up, and I don’t think they’re the same tree! Mine doesn’t flower like I saw online that the catalpa trees do. Maybe it’s just a lookalike! Not sure what exact tree mine is

@@meggrowsplants yea a closer look at the leaves and those are slightly serrated. Catalpa leaves are more like hearts. You could plant one there though! They do well in zone 4-8. I have them scattered in the woods behind my house, very pretty tree

In a hotter climate, straw mulch is better at reflecting heat than a dark mulch like wood chips or compost. Keeping the soil cooler (and damper) makes plants and soil life happier! 💚

Yes!! Thank you for that addition, that is very true. I feel like it’s the best option for me in my climate because it just gets soooo hot here!
