I'm Building a Pick And Place!

After soldering 3,000 components by hand for the Glowtie Kickstarter, I've decided to build a pick and place! I bought an OpenBuilds Acro 55 for the X and Y axis, then I'm using a RAMPS board with Marlin Firmware for a controller. At some point, I'll integrate OpenPNP into the mix for actually telling the machine what to do. Then, I'll design custom pick and place feeder assemblies to supply components for placing. There's a lot to do!

Decided to rewatch this after finishing my LumenPNP kit. Insane how far it's developed in just two years

From touch capacity electric tea lights to pick and place machines, your channel has projects everyone can enjoy! Damn, dude. This is amazing!

If you install a tool rack, you could have an interchangeable head stock. This would allow you to create a 3 axis multi-tool arrangement. Drill head, router head, solder paste head, suction head and hot air solder head. You could also have interchangeable tools, such as different size suction heads for different components and different nozzles for soldering different components.

Try replacing the toy motors with 200/400w motors and fix the gantry properly so it won't shake. Sooner or later you'll hit the 5-10k cph limit

Just a heads up, you should take a look at OpenPnP. I haven't used it personally, but from what I can gather, it's a program that generates the gcode based on your board layout/machine configuration, sends that gcode to a Smoothieboard, does the CV to verify images from the cameras, etc. It's another tool to learn (where you're obviously experienced with GRBL/Marlin already), but it'll probably save you a lot of development time in the long run. For a simple strip-feeder solution, I'd just cut it in 1ft lengths, clamp it to the work surface, and peel the clear film off. It'll require more reloads, but that's fine for development purposes.

You will likely smoke your RAMPS with that setup. The motor is a highly inductive load and doesn’t like changes in current. As a result, you will see voltage spikes when turning off the motor that can kill the mosfet controlling it. You need to add what’s called a fly back diode across the pump motor to counteract this.

Thanks for bringing us along this journey. Looking forward to how you handle feeders. There are a couple really good Google groups with information and like minded people building PNP's. Search "OpenPNP" and "Desktop Pick and Place" Google groups.

Yeah, feeders are going to be interesting! Thanks for the advice on the Google groups, I've been looking for a place where people are working on these types of builds. I've already put 100 or so hours into CAD, circuit design, and research for it, and I still feel like I've got a lot to go.

This is such an awesome project, enjoy! One thing I'm confused about is the soldering, is that still going to be manual?
@stephen_hawes
@stephen_hawes 4 года назад
Thanks! Yeah that's a good question. Most often people will buy a solder paste stencil and use that to put solder paste on all the pads. Then after the components are placed, it gets heated up which actually makes the electrical connection. I'm thinking about putting a paste extruder on this machine and making the entire process automated! (Awesome Electronoobs video showing the stencil process: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uXvXwzQf1gU.html)

@Oliver Hope and @@stephen_hawes i am building one of these machines myself and you can also use a automatic paste head where there is either a stepper or pump putting dabs of solder paste on each pad this is done before parts are placed also on a side note part of the reason i am building one is to make it easyer help the diy pnp comunity grow i was also thining of making a custom controllor instead of the ramps board that has the same functionality with expastion boards stephen do you have a discord where you are puting developments of this project for others to adi you or is it just youtube
