December 31st 2016 Episode 2
Off to a bang on the very first day of my Oman solo tour on a giant kawaski KLR 650. All packed and ready to go, I head off from Muscat through Rustaq and into Wadi Bani awf to spend my New years camping under a million stars. By far the toughest roads I've ever ridden. SUPER steep narrow tracks, hairpin turns all in deep soft sand and rocks. To end the day I drop the bike in the middle of the mountains..... Wait to see what happens next !
This was the first time I've ever attempted roads of this sorts. I don't claim myself as a professional adv rider. I'm an avid adventurer who likes to do things my own way and its been working for me for the past 12 years.. Yes there are "better ways to do it" but I like my way :)
FYI- This was a borrowed bike and helmet. We tried to lower it as much as possible. It wasn't ideal, but it was the only way I'd have a bike for this trip. Same went for the oversized helmet- Yes I knew the risk.
As far as picking the bike up. I know how to correctly pick up a bike, I've watched many tutorials.. HOWEVER.. I have a very bad disc problem in my back. the "recommended" way to pick up the bike immediately gave me the "no no feeling" The 6 km bag on the back did not make a difference, so wouldn't have helped taking it off. After dropping my bike nearly everday on this trip ( due to the height, mostly standing still) I decided at the end of the trip to try my own way to pick it up. which was NOT the recommend way. but it was the perfect way for my body and this bike. Goes to show you , not one technique for all bodies. I made a fun little video about that experience and will release it at the end of all of the episodes. I appreciate all of the concern and tips, but its all good .
Thank you for watching !

A can-do attitude is one of the most important things to riding a heavily laden bike long distance. You go girl! My brother was following my BMW R1150GS ADV on 7 miles of truly rough washboard and potholed gravel road in western Montana a week ago. When we got to our campsite, I said to him "Congratulations. You just completed the BMW off road training course... on a Harley Davidson!" :)

My wife started riding two years ago and my oldest daughter, who is transgender, so now my son; and my youngest daughter I have encouraged also to ride. doing the mc safety courses. Hi . great vid. but please if your going to put a helmet on the most important part of your body first make sure you bought one that fits properly and second the strap is pulled tight enough so it dos not come of. no matter what happens. a close friend had a crash his helmet strap was to loose it came of on impact he's now totally blind. he was under 20 years old so make sure helmets are tight enough.good luck ride safe.

Thank you for being so honest about how you felt before your ride and on the ride itself. Most of these I see on here is like " I'm taking my bike on a journey come watch me and I'll edit all the crap I screwed up on" type of people . It's nice to watch someone experiencing what truly happened not just what looks cool to them. Suggestions from a professional... If your going to ride the adventure life grab a adventure helmet full face with a visor, make sure its snug and light weight, your neck will thank you each night. There are a million choices out there in every budget. Up grade, when you can, to some cans for the sides of the bike to hold your stuff and protect your legs when you fall and believe me we all fall , there easier to put on then you might think, don't forget to take a little gas in those just in case. It looks like your riding in remote areas so be a "Boy Scout", they live by this quote, "always be prepared." Prep is everything, you always need something you didn't pack I've found. I fill my side cans with what I think I might need and pack a back pack with hydro tube and light weight, protein packed dry foods. Stop and snack to stay sharp, rest often on long journeys. Your bike is perfect for what your doing, it is very reliable and can be upgraded very easily to soot your riding needs. Riding is the best way to learn what you can and what you shouldn't do. Keep riding, you did amazing on your big adventure, more people screw up way worse on there first big journey. Keep the rubber side down, but don't ride any faster than your angel can follow. ( ;

Just found you on the web. Congrats, you are brave and have an amazing attitude. Here's something for your consideration at some point in your moto adventures. The KLR 650 is a huge bike with a high center of gravity. It has a 35+" seat height which makes getting on and off a bit challenging. It weighs over 400 pounds dry and is hard a hell to pick up when dumped. That configuration is going to make you feel on the verge of losing control when the going gets tough, as I see in some of your videos. I have owned a number of dirt bikes and dual-purpose bikes, including the KLR 650. The KLR was a handful even for me and I'm 5'11" - 185 pounds. Yes, people rave about the KLR, but I never got comfortable with it due to its weight and high center of gravity. My point of reference for an off-road adventure bike is the 10,000 miles I've ridden in Baja and the Copper Canyon area of Mexico on a Husqvarna that weighed 250 pounds (dry) and had a seat height of about 32". Unfortunately, you can't get Huskies with low seat heights like that anymore. That said, there are a number of bikes that you would probably find a lot more comfortable and forgiving, compared to the KLR. The Yamaha XT250, for example, is 100 pounds lighter and the seat height is 3" lower than the KLR (www.yamahamotorsports.com/adventure-touring-dual-sport/models/xt250). You might even consider the Honda CRF230F (powersports.honda.com/2017/crf230f.aspx). It's got a lower seat height and lower center of gravity than the KLR and weighs an incredible 160 pounds less than the KLR (that's the equivalent of removing the weight of 3 bags of cement from your KLR). These Yamahas and Hondas are relatively inexpensive and have an awesome reputation for reliability. Don't let anybody BS you... these 250cc four-strokes can take you anywhere in the world. Of course, you would have to make some mods on bikes like these (larger fuel tank primarily), but you would be far more comfortable on one of them on bad roads, compared to the KLR. And, the really bad sections of road would not be nearly as treacherous and frightening as they are on the top-heavy KLR. Just food for thot for the future. Keep on adventuring!! Enjoy following you.

Adventure before Dementia. Common saying in Australia. Saddle bags are better as lower center of gravity. Pack camping gear one side gut luggage the other then they can stay on bike. Tank bags are awesome. That tail bag looks heavy!. Good to see a honest to god female traveller hitting the trails. Iron side up! Subbed

Those kids were adorable, and so lovely to hear Arabic. I've taught many people from Oman here in the US. They are great & it's a gorgeous country. I'm looking forward to more, Rosie. Thanks for linking in from your Instagram! ❤️

Rosie Gabrielle I hope I can get on a bike for myself one day! I'm a little sad to report that a friend just lost her 25-year-old son to a freak bike accident last weekend. It made me remember that it's always safety first on a bike, but even with safety, shit can still happen. 😓 The feeling of freedom on a bike is like no other, though, and I'm pretty sure he died loving what so many also love. I still hope one day to learn how to ride. Be safe out there. ❤️

Karin B -Look up Motorcycle Safety Foundation- they teach courses all across the US, from beginners to intermediate to advanced. MSF has been around for decades, they will teach you how to ride safely. Also a great idea to take a course if you're getting (or thinking of getting) back into riding and it's been a while... I know some riders up north take a refresher course every spring after a long winter season off the bike to stay sharp (and safe). I can't say it's available everywhere, but in many areas they even supply bikes/equipment to learn on- if you really decide it's not for you, you haven't wasted a lot of $$ on equipment/a bike, but once you've learned how to ride safely, I'm pretty sure you'll be hooked! You can do it!

Gain experience and confidence by training on an MX bike on an MX track and you'll be on the rear wheel down that one track in no time. Six monthes on an MX bike really pushing it and you'll find places inside of you that you never knew existed. This type of training will only make you a much safer rider in the future. If your interested I suggest maybe an 80 or 100 cc two stroke bike to start with considering your height. Maybe you can hook up with someone willing to let you ride there bikes with them at a track or in the woods. I make this suggestion to any rider that hasn't done any type Motocross because of how much you can learn and how quickly you can learn it. After a few weeks of giving it what she's got on a quick race style dirt bike and you'll be bursting with much more skill and confidence. Your absolutely awesome I admire what your doing very much. I just turned 37 & I've lived and travelled the U.S. and have only seen a tenth of what id like to see but I will be seeing the other side of the State's soon. We are making the leap from the East Coast to the west permanently and I completely look forward to biking Washington, Oregon and of course Cali. After I've seen all of our United States and Canada (ive been to 37 states so far) I'll take an adventure trip down to south America. I'll probably choose the KLR too considering its a fantastic bike for these types of trips. Happy journey and safe riding!

Enjoy your riding. You'll enjoy it longer with proper gear. They make it for all winds and weathers and it will only add to the adventure. That big lid is wrong in so many ways but you knew that. The rest is what you find out you needed after it's to late. Stay safe and enjoy.
