Man...oh, MAN!!! This hits ya DEEP in your soul! Ain't got no soul...you will after you listen to this! And in 1959?? Timeless!!! Take me with ya when you go. PLEASE!!
Without question there's no other group of singers like this family of true musicians. My soul feels peace and my spirit free when listening to Mavis. She gives me strength.
The haunting high voice of Pops, and the deep contralto of Mavis, with Purvis and Cleotha filling in the middle, take you to another place--a better place.
I knew Pops from when I waited on him in a music store on Michigan Avenue on Chicago's so' side from '68 - '72. I was a young drummer (an inexperienced kid) and realized who Pops was, but never thought about that fact because I just enjoyed him coming in and being his kind, mild self, kindly smile and soft smooth voice. He'd always spend a few minutes small talkin' with me. During that time he'd been on the Carson show and brought his Fender Twin Reverb amp in as a trade in, which my brother bought. Now I look back and regret not talkin' more music with him, and, knowin' his kindness, maybe he'd have even let me sit in some time. I do miss him and look forward to seein' him again in the" by-and-by".
The sounds are incredible! The backup vocals compliment and the lead singer reacts replies. They take on each other’s style in their own soul. Her vibrato is great.
^ She was billed as "17" when she was really 20. Show business changes stats to enhance publicity appeal. Met them when I was 14 @ The Holy House of Prayer For All People, Brooklyn, New York. Elder Isaac O. Miller, Pastor and E. D. Sangster, Sr. Assistant Pastor. During that time we had a new emerging firebrand-powerhouse pastor. Bro. Landon Penn who with his lovely wife Miss. Cynthia went on to do great works in the name of Jesus. As for me and Mavis? We are 6 years apart. 💕
^ I was a Program Director for Joe Bostic, Sr.'s "Gospel Train" radio show on WLIB. He and his son, Joe, Jr., promoted many Gospel Shows throughout the New York area. Mrs. Bostic owned and operated a private school in Brooklyn, NY and their other son, Lee Bostic, became an attorney. There was a daughter who stayed out of the limelight as did Lee and Mrs. Dorothy Bostic. Interesting family. Quite prominent among well-to-do blacks in the 50's and 60's.
Jason Walker Reverse the order, cowboy. Janis sounds like this...this was first, THE ORIGINAL!! From this (gospel), came the blues, from the blues came rock (even country music). From this, came R & B, from R&B came all forms of popular music today. ALL ROOTED in old time gospel, which has its roots in slave field songs.
When Mavis sings cross on my shoulder sword in my hand--I'm going down fighting, this reminds me of the Senate run-off in Georgia. If we change the Senate we change the Power for all of God's children who have to remain on Earth until the Master calls. Go out and vote or if you can't send your prayers.
