I’ve always kept all my animals in natural and/or bioactive enclosures, for more than 20 years. It’s always just made sense to me! Keeping animals in conditions as close to their natural environments just always seemed ‘right’. Im so happy to see this taking off in mainstream husbandry!

Same experience. People in the hobby generally advice against heat, but my spiders love sunbathing. Do they need it? Probably not. Do they like it? It seems so....they aren't hiding or avoiding it. If you're careful about it and monitor everything, i don't think heat is bad for them. They come from tropical climates, so....

I swear spiders are smarter than people realize. I mean, jumping spiders have the obvious studies done and show incredible intelligence for a spider, but even the cellar spiders around my house I've seen actively cooperating and interacting with obvious social cues. Not to mention spiders becoming less reactive to humans over time really indicates learning, even simple desensitization. Natural enclosures sound so much better for them!

yessss. It’s always the best day of the week when you post a video. So glad you’re successful and able to do what you love!!! When it comes to enclosures, I look at a few things… If the spider is very colorful and visible I put them in enclosures that are visually appealing so you can easily appreciate their beauty. If they’re more average looking or more fossorial I will give them a basic enclosure and enjoy them when it’s feeding time. :) Either way, I always give the tarantula a proper enclosure for their biological needs, size and temperament. :)

Spiders may not have a sense of "beauty" or aesthetics, or colour preferences like we would with our own houses, but instinctually there's likely a drive to search for specific environments, a need for environmental comfort. It's a lesser need than say, thirst or hunger, since it's not directly tied to survival, but it likely still plays a role in comfort, which plays a huge part in feeling secure, and therefore chill and not defensive/aggressive. Because really, an "agressive" animal is likely simply uncomfortable or scared, and lashing out because of it. I know I wouldn't feel too safe if I had to live in the equivalent of a transparent hospital room.

I do basic setups and household containers for slings and juvies, but when they reach the sub adult stage, I rehouse them in bioactives. I live in a rural area on a large property, so I often source different soil types, rocks, bark, leaf litter, and everything else I put in my enclosures. I don't bake or make any attempt to sterilize any of it. I've also been hasled by other keepers that insist that I'm endangering my Ts. Not one of those keepers has ever provided any concrete evidence to prove their point. I think the practice of sterilize everything you put in an enclosure that is collected from outdoors routine is based on outdated reptile keeper information.

Today's Unsolicited Motherly Advice - You aren't abandoning the basics of husbandry - I don't think we'll be seeing sponges in your water dishes or terrestrial enclosures with 12 inch drops. You are moving into a more advanced level of husbandry, definitely. And that's great. I love that you stay on top of the current research and bring those interviews with scientists in the field to your channels. I also think it's fantastic that you are putting into practice what you're learning. Don't cheapen what you are actually doing such a good job with hyperbole and click-baity titles. You don't need it. What you're doing is already spectacular. Have confidence that will bring in the audience on its own.

I love that you made this video! This is exactly how I strive to keep my animals. My sister has 4 tarantulas (3 of which I bought) and I taught her how to do bioactives and naturalistic set ups. It encourages their natural behavior and mood. One of my favorite things to do is making enclosures. I just feel like I can really make it my own, while still encapsulating nature and realistic environments. I have an A. chalcodes in a bioactive, and she loves exploring and is the sweetest, most docile T I've ever met. She has never kicked a hair, and she doesn't even move a muscle when I open her enclosure.
@rebel4466
@rebel4466 Год назад
Arachnids are difficult in really finding out "what they need". I personally don't think that they have any benefits from a naturalistic VS a simple enclosure whatsoever. If the temps and humidity is okay and they have food, water and a hide, they simply don't care and from my experience aren't changing their behavior. But naturalistic enclosures simply look better and (if bioactive) are easy to maintain and will hold humidity very well. This kind of enclosure is a decorative piece, bringing a bit of rainforest into your house, which I like about it. I'm all for it, I just don't think the spider appreciates the work. Just look at your normal everyday spider in or outside. Sitting in a web in a corner of a basement isn't pure excitement. We probably wouldn't set up a basement corner enclosure though. Like I said, arachnids are very special in that regard. Most animals will appreciate the work you're putting in a lot more. Doesn't mean that they don't deserve it, even if it's just nicer for their audience

It’s interesting and I don’t want to say anything bad about anyone - but often I have arguments with people from the US about how to keep tarantulas and even other animals like rats, hamsters, fishes, birds or even dogs. We in Germany have completely different rules when it comes to how to keep animals, what is allowed and good for the animals itself. Size of enclosures and even food. Our tarantula breeders ( known and registered ones) have they tarantulas in glass enclosures - seeing the videos on here from breeders from the US having them all stacked in plastic boxes with basically nothing in the box is something I never saw before in the hobby here in GER. Same with cropping ears of dogs or keeping birds or parrots by themselves. It’s just not normal anymore. I am wondering if the government in the US does not care or why does the majority of people don’t move forward in terms of keeping animals.
@mitchelldrydak8798
@mitchelldrydak8798 Год назад
Awesome video! Tbh, I don't disagree that enclosures with a significant amount of enrichment are better, but I think striving for "naturalistic" isn't a great goal. We can only hope to have the palest imitation of an animal's natural environment, unless you live in close proximity to their natural habitat. Species by species, the research that you would have to do to replicate a natural environment would be legit insurmountable. These plants and bark and tried leaves folks use to decorate their enclosures are literally just as foreign to many, many species as styrofoam or cork tiles. That's not even to say the very real risks associated with proper bioactive enclosures. Isopods, a staple, could easily kill a molting animal if you choose the wrong species. No hate, and I loved the video and agree with lots. But I think lots of folks sacrifice the well-being of their animals for the goal of making the enclosures "naturalistic". It's not for the animal, it's for you (not all the time, but lots of the time).

She is thoroughly enjoying it and i wish id done it sooner. i can tell she is happy as she's already eaten a roach. the best part is she has increased ventilation now, and when she reached the bigger air holes she froze and just hung out there for a while getting fresh air. Ill be getting bigger enclosures for my other slings now, nothing huge, just more enriching.

Love your content. I don't care what anyone says, we should treat all living things how we would want to be treated. Just because spiders and bugs don't emote like us doesn't mean they aren't aware of their surroundings or have thoughts and feelings. There's no way to know for sure. So just to be safe, treat all animals how you'd want to be treated ❤ (and no, i dont mean that literally of course, as animals have different needs than us... i just mean treat them with respect and care) I can't believe the guy who said you can't keep your snake in a giant enclosure. My ball python is in a giant enclosure 3 times bigger than he needs, but he enjoys the space and enrichment. I wish i could keep arachnids but my family won't let me. So until I have my own place I will continue to get my spider fix thru your videos 😂

Thank you SO much for spreading the idea of basic decency toward the animals you keep. Of Course tarantulas appreciate more room and more natural environments. Literally Any animal is going to prefer being kept in a larger and more natural environment. I've been saying this randomly on forums and occasionally replying to videos and facebook posts for years, but for the most part avoid the forums, etc, because there are so many shitbags who will attack you for promoting basic decency toward your animals. It's sad. What you're doing is fantastic. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thank you for making this video, it's really encouraging. I've been struggling lately mentally and really slacking on my tarantula care. But I've been motivated lately to change it around and I'm treating him much better, and planning on making him a bioactive tank. I was reading conflicting information on how worth it it is. But your video has definitely made feel like I'm doing the right thing!

Two questions, second one is kind of rhetorical and sarcastic. First, one of the key components of a bioactive enclosure is the drainage layer, ive always had a tough time with this when it comes to my Ts (i also keep dart frogs) cause they like to destroy it, how are you addressing that with specifically burrowing species? Second, the people who made complaints about bioactive enclosures for ANY animal especially the snakes, where do you guys think animals come from? Nature is bioactive (even in the desert) so saying bioactivity is bad for any animal just absolutely blows my mind.

That's the nice thing about the bio dude bioactive substrates. The way they are mixed, especially if you're adding the sphagnum miss and leaf litter, they dont require a drainage. I initially gave up on bioactive setups for tarantulas bc my T. stirmi kept digging up the drainage layer. But with the biodude substrate, it isn't neccessary. Check out their RU-vid channel for more information and see all the bioactive enclosures they build WITHOUT a drainage layer. It is a game changer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DNhG9hTMvIQ.html

As a former scientist and biologist, I cannot comprehend why so many people are still adamant about bioactive enclosures? My babies (C. versicolor, T. vagans, T. albopilosus and Hapalopus formosus) all have bioactive enclosures emulating their natural habitat. They thrive and seem to me "enjoying" their "homes" as they never ever gave me threat poses or kicked hair whether during feeding, maintenance, rehousing, and handling (only when necessary of course, okay, sort of because I love it so I allow myself this only during rehousing). I don't use any tech - daylight and me watering when necessary seems enough, but that's because of where I keep terrariums and their small number, so I do not require automation of any kind. My tarantulas like to stay outside, and they are never stressed when I move around the enclosures or watch them. They use all the enclosure for burrowing, "strolling", exploring, webbing, and "chilling". My first ever enclosures were naturalistic and I like to think my Ts do better now in bioactive - - but I agree it's not very scientifically said as obviously their behaviour would be affected by growth, etc. still, they thrive.

This is super cool! If putting more effort into the adults environments made them less aggressive towards you, and they have a capacity for learning, I would be interested in a more "long term" experiment; raise a notoriously aggresive species using the best possible environment from sling to adult to see if they respond better to their keeper.

I’m new to the hobby and was wondering if there were things I could add to my substrate to enrich my T? I currently have a B. hamorii and a T. Verdezi. I’m currently using cocoa fiber substrate with added leaf litter.

It always kills me when people say the cage is too big for whatever animal. Like... where tf do you think these animals come from???? Boxes in the critter warehouse??? 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

The people saying a bioactive enclosure isn't natural.. I wonder... They DO realize animals come from OUTSIDE, right? I mean, snakes and Tarantulas and the like haven't been altered like dogs have by Humans, so of course they would love a naturalistic enclosure, instinct alone would make it feel more... normal, I would think anyways. Even if not, I seriously doubt they have agoraphobia. XD Also, switched to the bio dudes soil for my T's :3 Looking forward to using it for the first time tomorrow, when my girls new enclosure arrives :D

What do any of you recommend as a clean-up-crew for dry T's? So I am trying this on my South African T. I have a sub-adult H. Pulchripes in an 18x18x12, 1/2 round corkbark across the back forming an under ground "cave" open at both ends, and a corkbark 1/2 round on surface level. She spends the most time in the cave, from 12 noon til about 8pm. Then she come out for an hour or so then retreat to the cave til 1am-3am, then comes out and hangs out til noon. (I have a camera recording her when she moves). The tank is 75-80 degrees with 45% humidity. Small water dish is always full and I will mist to wet the walls once every 2 days which will spike the Humidity to 75%. I have ordered 3 plants that are natural to South Africa and I will plant them this week. I'm not sure if I am "over watering" my T. Any input is cool.

Hi! Love your videos! Thank you for all the info! Do we only use springtails in humid enclosures then? Or would we want to use them for arid enclosures too? They help keep the mold down, right? Thanks!
