Following my horological adventure in Europe with a small travel watch collection, I've been thinking about consolidating my extensive collection. Every watch collector comes to a crossroads in their collecting adventure where they feel closer to the end than the beginning, and considers calling it quits. So is it more about the collecting journey or the final destination? And what has caused me to reconsider my own priorities when it comes to watch collecting? Is it my drastically changing taste in watches? Or the exposure to so many different watches and the knowledge I've gained over the years? In this video I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of small and concise versus large and diverse watch collections, my ongoing obsession with Panerai, and how a recent acquisition of the Casio A700W and the release of Frederique Constant's new Tourbillon (which is the most affordable Swiss made watch on the market at the moment) have impacted my collecting priorities. I also unbox the new Nivada Grenchen F77 and share some quick thoughts on the blue dial with date. And I discuss what's next in my collection journey, how all of these individual watch moments have changed my collector perspective, and thoughts on what my final grail watch will be. I lost all my possessions (bar the clothes I was standing in) in a house fire a few years ago. The strangest thing was...it was quite liberating. There was very little I actually missed. I think your possessions can end up owning you.

No sympathy required. I had somewhere to stay and never had to worry about where my next meal was coming from. There are plenty who suffer from the vicissitudes of fate worse than me. Remember, even on your worst day, there is some poor individual somewhere who would gladly swap lives with you.

I’ve sold a lot of my collections, cds,games, etc. I sold a lot of watches a few years ago and boiled it down to my Seiko Arnie, Nomos club and a Gshock. I still enjoy watching and reading things on watches but the days of me trying to justify a watch and then working my balls off for it are over.

Good on you. I've wasted thousands over the years on watches and it leaves you depressed. Haven't bought one for over a year and only have 3 now that I'm really happy with, and rotate what I wear every other day. My G Shock, Orient M Force, and my Mido Ocean Star 600m Certified Chrono.

My collection currently consists of 15 at the moment … I’ve always adhered to the discipline of being able to wear any of my pieces with casual or formal wear , I appreciate every watch I own tremendously and value the commitment it has taken to acquire each and every one ! This resonated with my personal feelings in watch collecting recently, i had many watches from various values and i felt i was always chasing the next piece. But in unforeseen circumstances my collection needed reducing, so spent considerable time really picking out the ones i just couldn’t part with. That was my planet ocean, Tudor Pepsi GMT, my first auto the Hamilton x wind and my rock solid G-Shock. Ironically it really wasn’t easy to do, however i sincerely appreciate what i have more now than even and couldn’t be happier. Obviously my passion for watches wont every die, but my desire to chase has ceased so i can really enjoy what i wear without any regret!

12:08-12:39 was my favorite part of the video. It’s that mentality and attitude that has kept me watching this channel all of these years. It’s also, in a positive way, had an influence on me. I was around 18 when I started watching this channel and I’m so glad I did because it’s helped to shaped other aspects of my personality outside of my watches. Always a pleasure and great video! TGV - You were the reason I got into watch collecting. With my collection already at 4, I can imagine what you mean as the collections reaches double digits. The thing is every watch I've purchased is tied to a story and/or goal. Because of this, it's less of an impulse and feels more like an accomplishment. I've already told myself if I ever reach 24 watches total, I'm done. If I want a new one, I have to sell another. It's helped me be more decisive with my choices and because of this...the game continues.

I love Casio, but recently bought a few Armitrons and they are what I always wanted Casio to be. I picked up the Rubik, Griffy, and Ridgemont, all fully stainless cases with mineral crystal and each around $30 each. If you are a Casio fan I highly recommend checking them out. They make a lot of junk, but they knocked it out of the park with their vintage line (except for the backlight on the Rubik).

I think collecting is often an emotionally driven hobby. Years go by and the rational evaluation tends to grow and bring you to the stage you are in now TGV. I’m only 35 but have been collecting since I was about 15 years old because my father was a watch dealer. I got to a point I had 20 plus watches when I think my rational part kicked in. Since then I put down some rules: 1. I like the variety, so I decided I should have 1 of each type of watch 2. Focus only on watches I can wear daily (avoid expensive watches) 3. I have a passion por rugged and versatile watches that are that great deal, that offer more for the price, so I keep myself in the entry level to subluxury price range. Nowadays I keep a steady 10 watch collection and rarely feel the need to change since recent releases do not beat the criteria of the ones I allready own.

Sweet! I go for functionality, also avoid excessively expensive/top tier luxury watches and it’s all about colourways to match a season/outfit. Don’t own anything over 1200 dollars. Some have paid as little as 200 secondhand on ebay. At about 20 but looking to cut to 15 and go from there. Never felt a need for rolex, ap, grand seiko, vc or even omega by comparison

This is a really interesting topic. For a long time I, too, have reached the point of questioning myself when there are too many watches in the boxes. Even if my focus for a long time was only on the 50s and 60s, one day it was too many watches for me. I have reduced my collection to a few watches. Then I bought a watch box with 9 spaces. It is important for me not to exceed this limit. A watch would have to go before I buy a new one. This method helped me a lot to reduce myself to the watches that are most important to me. And it also helped me to question myself again and again when making a potential new purchase, whether this is necessary, because one of my beloved watches would have to go for it. Of course, every collector has their own view of how many watches are enough. But 9 watches are the ideal consensus for me to look forward to each one in turn. First, your 24-hour Breitling Cosmonaute is brilliant TGV. Second, I learned from you what a watch collection is. I no longer expect one watch to be everything in every context. I enjoy a very modest collection for which I've spent less than $1K in aggregate. I love my gray market Tissot COSC Powermatic 80 in rose gold with an alligator strap I added. It's light, small, elegant, and incredibly accurate. My diver is an Invicta Pro Diver that looks and wears great, has an amazingly accurate Seiko-designed NH35a movement, and was almost embarrassingly inexpensive. My work on the car weekender is a Citizen eco-drive panda field style chronograph with a canvas strap that I wear with impunity. And finally, the watch that was my former "do it all" that I still wear often and enjoy enormously (and use to set my other watches) is a Citizen pilot watch complete with its circular slide rule and atomic synchronized U680 eco-drive movement. Each of these watches has a technological and aesthetic story to tell whether it's the laser-poised balance wheel of the Tissot or the incredible technology packed into the Citizen aviator. But that brings me to the third and final point; every watch you feature has a story to tell, be it historical, technological, or aesthetic, and you do a wonderful job of telling those stories without a hint of flip it for a profit or watch snobbery attitude. Started in the hobby 4 years ago. At my height I was at 13+ watches, and have touched 30+. I’ve now only had my Explorer 124270 and Garmin Forerunner 245M for working out, for 2 years and have no desire to have anything else anytime soon. Thanks for your service to all in the hobby.

TGV, it is just so refreshing to see someone discuss our hobby in an honest and passionate way that doesn't sound like a broken record - "value proposition" this and "great investment" that. Everybody wanting the same grails when there is such a vast number of watches of all kind does my head in. I believe there isnt a perfect collection size - for me its about having watches, regardless of price, status, and versatility, that tug at my heartstrings and make me smile every damn time I look at my wrist. This does mean that many watches come in, and many leave, but a special few stick around. Often these tend to be pieces that are off the beaten path - my Squale Azzurro, Porsche Design Orfina, O&W P104 and Citizen Nighthawk are my faves. I own about 40 watches in my collection, which I’ve been building since 2010. All are different in designs . No two look exactly the same. Some are luxury brands costing thousands of dollars, others, like the one I currently have on, cost less than one hundred USD. I like having the variety to choose from to suit my mood. Generally, I buy what I like, not what others say I should like! Great show, TGV!!

Thanks for sharing this insightful viewpoint. I know I've got hold of a keeper when while I'm wearing it I find myself checking the time rather a lot more often than I actually need to, and having a tiny wave of satisfaction pulse through my chest every time. That's what wearing a wristwatch should be about, and it can happen at any price point.

I agree, all roads do lead to a Grand Seiko. My pinnacle is to have a 3 watch collection- to acquire a Grand Seiko spring drive, a Frederique Constant art deco and a baby--G. At the end of the day TGV, don't forget your original intention for starting a collection. If you stick to that, the 'what ifs' won't matter.

Great video as always! I think it’s a nice feeling to fill up the 12 watch case that’s on my dresser. It gives me a sense of finality and completion. Also, it helps keep my watch amount low because if I want another watch, I have to sell one that’s in the box. This also has the added benefit of helping me pare down what kind of watches I want to have because I can only have 12. The idea of having another case and filling that up is too daunting to me so having just one case really works for me. Just my two cents.

Love this TGV. I collect in the same way as you, no focus on one style, brand or era. Just whatever I want/like. Then like you say, you end up with a multitude of watches and it's very dangerous on the old bank balance... I absolutely envy those who can keep to a 3-5 piece limit and remain happy in those limitations. I don't think I could ever. Admittedly my own collection is much more budget orientated. But even then, it's still an expensive hobby no matter what price range you're able to strut in. Great video as always.

Hi TGV, been a subscriber for some time and really appreciate you having principles in this day and age (and in this industry), do stick with it; I think it does come through subconsciously, even when you are not talking about any such subject. Although I love collecting and these possessions do bring a smile to my face when everything else is going well, sometimes I do consciously assess myself if I am valuing these objects so much to the detriment of my own family, friends and values. It is easy to get carried away and ruin a moment for someone else.

I have around 40 watches in my collection and recently, I began to feel a bit overwhelmed with what I had. There were a few that I wore frequently and many that I hadn't worn in a long time that were basically just taking up space. I currently have fifteen watches that I consider my keepers, but I'd like to get that down to twelve. I organized them into three different watch boxes based on my connection to them. One box contains my favorite watches as well as a few sentimental pieces. The second box contains my three Ball watches (my favorite brand). This box is actually a collection in itself (daily, dress, beater). The last box contains all of the "extra" watches that I have acquired over the years. These, I don't wear very often and may consider selling in the future. Early on, my collecting philosophy was "the more, the merrier!", but now I just feel kind of greedy and like I have a bit of a hoarding problem... Good luck with the collecting journey, however long it may last!

Johnny casual said it best many years ago. Watch collecting happens in a combination of phases and cycles. The phases represent constantly changing interests/ styles/ trends and the cycles are different states of the overall collection.

I've found the key for me, is to make sure the watch box / jewelry box has a limited number of slots for watches. forces you to plan ahead / trim down the collection. I barely have any watches. just been enjoying vids and window shopping for years. Just my tissot and citizen (first watch i ever bought). But i bought a nice 6 watch box a while back and am getting rid of it now. Just got tired of seeing all the empty slots. ANd just ordered a new box on amazon that has 4 slots, but drawers and other slots for various accessories. So it can hold my sunglasses, extra watch straps, ect.. I think 4 slots will be perfect for me and what i have planned. Just my random 2 cents

Thanks for the great video TGV. I got up to 40 watches in my collection before sanity finally kicked in (helped by having to fork out almost £2k to get 5 serviced / repaired at the same time). Have now got the collection down to a manageable 5 pieces and now only buy on a strict 'one in-one out' basis. There's always going to be another fantastic looking new watch appearing on the horizon but I now find it much easier to resist hitting the 'buy-it-now' button.

TGV , my mother always said : follow your heart ! And my father always completed : but take your brains with you ! I’m feeling the same thing about having so many watches, and not needing them. The truth is that living in Brazil is getting harder to own and use my vintage watches due to security problems, and that is something that I have to take in to account. My regrets are usually the ones I bought by impulse, and have to keep them because selling them is loosing money. I think I will reconsider all my needs and try to keep it at a minimum. By the way , you are very like you grand parent. Take care !

I parted ways with a pretty sizable collection some years ago, it felt like the right time. Ended up with an omega seamaster and a couple of G Shocks when it was all said and done, I am content.

I've had similar experiences with various hobbies and collecting, selling most of what I had, thinking it was the best decision at the time, only to regret it some time later and try to build it back up again, finding its never the same because of availability and higher prices later on, I've found that having a break and let the enthusiasm build up again works pretty well, but don't give up 👍

Having dispersed my various collections over the years and finally stopped collecting, I can honestly say that I wouldn't want anything back. I couldn't buy the liberation I feel of living minimally and concentrating on experiences as opposed to 'things'. That said, I still totally understand the preoccupation with and joys of collecting . . . but nowadays from the outside looking in.

I have about 25 watches and look at them almost everyday. But I wear only 2-3. Most are for a collection. Every once in awhile I give one to a deserving sole. That makes me happy. By the way, my father left me nothing when he pasted. Giving his fortune to his second wife us children hated. We worked like you. Congratulations to you in all manners of speaking.

Great video as always TGV. You would absolutely retain your integrity with a smaller collection. You have so much experience and historical knowledge to draw from. Moreover, I think what makes your videos so great is the hunger that you have for watch history, design, and culture. I went from about 25 watches down to the 2 I actually wear regularly, the 114060 Submariner and a Casio 5600. I did the same with my ridiculous knife collection, I got that down from ~150 to 5 knives that see regular use... Now I'm looking with intent at my wife's bag and earing collection... 😀

I agree. I have not really traveled the last 3 years. But when I did, I ended up getting a watch at the place I was vacationing. It makes parting with that particular watch very difficult. 😢

After around 20 years of collecting, 2 years ago I trimmed my collection right down from 36 pieces that I thought I really loved and couldn’t live without. After that cull, down to 7, I’m significantly more at peace, and happier, that I can now truly spend more time with a few pieces that I actually cherish. I realised that I couldn’t possibly spend any quality time with all that was in my initial collection. Best choice I ever made. I now thoroughly enjoy a frequent rotation through my Kermit, BB58, Pelagos FXD, Tudor GMT, SLA057 and a silly but fun Swatch. Very happy.

I hear you. I re started my watch obsession one year ago after 7 years of digital watches (I ended up hating them). However I am at 15 and starting to fear hoarding, the problem is that there is an almost infinite number of watches I like, but you can really enjoy just a few. My goal is to go down to ten and slowly build up my final 6. Hopefully it will work or maybe I will end up with 50 watches.

This channel has drastically changed my philosophy on watch ownership. After years of watching it I have found myself getting rid of many unnecessary watches as well as trying some I would never consider before discovering. It’s allowed me to enjoy that for my lifestyle more. I was very anti g shock before watching this but now my 5600 is my go to. I’m very happy with my current line up and have realized the high end ones I originally sought after were more about prestige rather than function

You’re channel has always been a classier one and the inspiration for my first two watches I bought for my collection ( 1969 Bulova Accutron Spaceview and Dan Henry 1970 ) . I hope selling your collection will bring you joy going forward . At the end of the day these things we obsess over simply measure time . And it ironically seems quite easy for us to lose track of that in pursuit of our next one . If this channel and the jobs you work cause you to burn time you were supposed to enjoy , I fully support if you take a step back . Time is never given back it only moves forward . After about 15 years of wearing the same Seiko Monster, I eventually replaced it with a Samurai. I picked up a few other Seiko 5 models, all under $500 in the time following that and that satisfied me. I worked nights and the slow day/date change in Seiko movements became instantly aggravating once I started looking at Swiss watches that had the instant day/date change feature at midnight. The $500 budget inched up to $1000 as I added more watches to my collection with better specs and features that I never knew I wanted/needed. Once I became a father, the watch I used for yard work became my daily. I needed something robust, anti-magnetic (kids love magnets), waterproof, accurate, and Casio made exactly what I wanted in the G-Shock square 5610. I’ve picked up a couple other multiband/solar G-Shocks since then and the vintage Casio line is starting to appeal to me. I started with analog watches with a budget that crept higher and higher as time went on and now I’m almost exclusively looking at sub $50 digital watches. At this point, if Casio made an all steel model with sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, and a decent solid link bracelet, I may take an extended break from buying another watch.

I wore an old Seiko Sports 100 as my only watch for nearly 20 years. It was already years old when my father gave it to me (made in the late 70s I think). It still works apart from the dead lume and my daughter has it now.

TGV I have rarely heard such a mature, thoughtful summary of this rabbit hole, which is the watch collecting experience. I have hit the dirty dozen in my collection. I am trying to collect on the basis of 1 watch per brand as my theme and no more than 2 of any complication. But that's not easy at all. Your reviews are responsible for a few of my acquiations. What I have recently realized is that a simple beater can bring as much pleasure as a watch worth thousands!

This is truly one of your best videos ever TGV - I think it's the sign of a mature watch collector, when you get to the point that you want to own fewer watches. I've been collecting on and off for 15 years now and I've finally got to the point where I own just two watches. The 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetual in green - 41mm and that's worn Mon-Fri. On weekends, I'll use my G Shock B5600 (bluetooth + multi band 6). Having less watches dramatically reduces time spent researching watches and trying to keep up with the joneses as you rightfully say in the video. With regards to my collecting I live by the words “you should love every watch you own, but you don’t need to own every watch you love.” For me less is often more and I try not to let my collection get to the point that it gets too large to the point where you can’t wear each and every one of them on a regular basis.

Truth. I'm more to the latter side of your assessment and find myself regularly wearing a watch I just love having on my wrist (Sinn 104 St Sa I anthracite) so the others have been relegated to obscurity; they're fancy paper weights now. But I do love certain aspects about them all still. In hindsight, I went too hard too early, before I had my collecting sea legs. Now I have several watches that I like but do not wear regularly, bc I have the one watch that I really do love to wear regularly. 🤷🏼

Fascinating insight. Personally, I have always lived with a rather contrary mind set, that includes my professional life. In watch collecting that has meant not following the crowd, which is why your videos are so valuable. You always manage to look from different perspectives. My next watch will be a Chopard Mille Miglia because of the history, the connection to motor sport and Italy. I've narrowed it down to 7 pieces that all have a personal meaning and a marked milestone in my journey called Life. The prices range from low to absurd but each once again marks a milestone or a sentimental gift from family or a dearest friend. They all have special documented memories that hopefully I can pass down to my children and my children's children and so on. Every timepiece has its history written in my personal journal so that the stories can be shared with my future inheritors in hopes that they will remember me and our family's history. That being said I still love to see the future of watchmaking will bring but I'll keep the admiring and wonder at a respectable distance. TGV this is a wonderful video. Cheers!

Great topic to present and reading the comments, great discussion again. I purchased last year my one and done watch. I was delighted and thought that would be it, no more rabbitt holes of watch reviews. The itch has started recently again, I convinced myself, I needed a vintage watch. Its amazing how easy it is to convince yourself that you need a certain watch. Social media algorithms ensuring ever video on vintage watches pops up for me to digest. My weekends have been taken up reading, studying and scrolling endlessly on websites. I've loved learning about lesser well known watch companies, the history of models. However, I have been having a real battle in my head about it all, do I need one, would I wear the vintage watch when I do not wear the majority of my watches in my very small, modest collection anymore since I got my last watch. This video and the discussion/comments has given clarity, I think we only need a couple of watches (if even) a daily driver and maybe a tool watch, mine being a polar fitness tracker which I wear when I am out running or in the gym most days. If I have a formal event in the future, my daily driver will be worn. The point of getting to know your watch over a long period of time has hit home for me TGV. Great video as always and thank you for the unbiased content. 👍👍

Thought provoking and interesting video T! For me, my collecting strategy is to build it with iconic watches from any brand or watches that I like for various reasons. The journey for me is also coming to an end, there’s only a certain amount I want to spend on watches and also the prices are also up yearly. Well I think I am content with what I have now so idk if cutting it down to 3 would make it any better 😂

I expect that what you’re feeling has been felt by every collector at one time or another. It’s a healthy reflection on our priorities. To me watch collecting is about story telling. Some watches tell their own story through association with famous events, people or activities. Some watches tell our stories when we buy then or are gifted them to mark a significant occurrence or we inherit them, complete with memories from a loved one. Some watches tell a tale of what might be, representing a better version of ourselves that we might aspire to be. The stories associated with my watches are what I really collect. This is why my collection has some watches of value that come with their own stories but still the ones closest to my heart are the ones where their value is in the story that I have imbued them with. These are the ones that I will never part with.

I'm happy now and have enjoyed the journey but feel I'm at the destination. I'm not saying I'll never buy another watch again, but I enjoy my watches so much more now.

You are spot on about what social media has been doing to the watch world over the last few years. I cant remember the last time I wasn't lusting after something. I put all my watches away and have only been wearing my Casio 5600. I'll pull out the watch box at the end of the year and reconnect with them then.
