Does anyone have experience with buying military surplus on this scale?

So you know, yes you can actually do this Phly, if it's demilitarized (the weapons are removed, which in this case means the gun and fire control systems). I know this because at one point I actually did look into importing a jet myself (an ex-Italian Air Force F-104 that was sitting in a scrapyard) for a museum. Unfortunately, we got outbid on that particular sale.

There was a retired Marines pilot who bought a Harrier so it’s possible. Though if you want a flyable one then you’ll need experience with jet aircraft for the FAA to let you get one.

Yeah I got a few friends that have done things like this and I have looked into it myself. A buddy of mine flies a B-25 at airshows and I know some of the guys at drive tanks here in Texas. As far as your state laws go I may have to do some research but the process for aircraft is fairly simple compared to tanks, especially non-functional aircraft. Shipping is also simple but expensive. Something like a MiG-21 they'll probably transport it on a flatbed semi trailer with the wings removed or, disassemble it slightly more and pack it up in 2-3 shipping containers. I could write more but.. hit me up if you need more info or I can put you in touch with some people with real world experience.

You’re gonna have to rent out a warehouse/ hangar at your local airfield. You will have to find all of its documentation and because it’s a Soviet built aircraft, I’m going to assume it’s not registered with the FAA. If it isn’t registered, I’d recommend you try to register it as an experimental aircraft which will allow you to circumvent a lot of maintenance paperwork and expenses. You will also need to hire an A&P rated mechanic and provide him or her with the service manuals and logs if the aircraft has them -if you plan to ever have it airworthy of course. (edit) also realized that the paperwork from the logistics from getting it over to the states is probably a head ache and probably very expensive.

You need to arrange the delivery. I have a relative that was an aviation museum restorer in Romania, and he had Mig-21 jet engines in his shop. I think if I ask him he can introduce me to the right people for a task like this. My only problem is that I don't have the time to deal this.

I would ask around on forums for military surplus. The process would be much the same for importing a tank. I would also say it probably wouldn’t be less or more difficult if it was flyable, so you might as well get a flyable one if you can find one you can afford. That would also open up the possibility of simply having someone fly it over instead of shipping it via a container, which could easily be more expensive than the plane itself. Then you could take flying lessons and actually fly a Mig21. I would also recommend a lawyer who has experience with weapon laws to help you navigate the ATF and FAA laws regarding the imports. Maybe reach out to various tank and aircraft museum curators for help finding those who can help you.

Welp, where I live there is park called "Patriot" and there once a year we have spicy things such as: Ka-50, Ka-52, BMD, BMP-2/3, T-72/90, Hreezantema, other vehicles and on 3/4 of things you can climb and quite few you can get into. Basically Russian military Disneyland

Hey Phly there are communities that have houses with hangers at air parks in certain places in the US, we have one in Cameron Park, CA(jets not allowed here though). You might consider looking into a neighborhood like that.

I know a gun broker who brokers deals from mostly the Ukraine. Firearms strictly (big ak guys) but he told me that the Ukrainians will import you anything if it nets them a profit so yea, hit my line they will sell you a tank but could probably scrounge up a mig if you asked nicely 😂

There are plenty of parks when I was growing up that had jet mockups to play on, they were typically made of concrete. But having a real jet would be sick!

Hear me out I know you love the Mig 29 but maintenance is easily going to be 1Mil+ a year, I suggest getting an L39 albatross which can run around 300k a year and much lower initial investment.

curiosity had me and i looked it up. the listing is for that Polish MiG-21UM "0856", "5210" is a preserved airframe in Switzerland. if it is actually in parts like the photos suggest, it would probably be shipped on flatbeds

Day 76: Phlee, play the I-185 (M-82) at 3.7 for CAS. It is WAAAAAY underrated (3x20mm with powerphul AP + bombs/rockets). It's also really phast.

I don't know what smoke is supposed to mean, but I use it as a signal to allies mostly goofing around, or as a signal to enemies to "FIGHT ME!" I don't like headons though.

We have old Migs put as a monuments in small villages across the country in Bulgaria. You should check some pictures on the internet. You will be amazed how common it is.

You can just loan the mig to a local museum. You get a place to put it, you can negotiate so that you can go see it any time you want, and other people can go see the mig with your name on the plack.

The deflection thing is because the missiles fly straight at rip (mostly to ensure safe separation) and the target may be out of field of view by the time it starts actually guiding.

Phly you would have to contact a shipping company then fly over to the destination where the mig is get it on a truck and ship to your house but it is complicated to set up shipping and it’s expensive

You should contact the military aviation museum in VA beach. They are a private museum with over 25 operational military planes including an me262. I would assume they would know since it’s all privately owned.

Idk if you visited it Phly but if you ever go to Normandy go visit the Caen memorial they have a beautiful Mig21 there, i just visited it for the second time with school last Thursday.

The East block countries esp Russia have ALL kinds of old jets for sale. The cheap ones are the ones that are not flight ready. The ones that you CAN fly are more expensive. But you can hop them from the western part of Russia to the East and then across the bearing sea to Alaska and then on to the lower 48 states. It has been done MANY TIMES!! You can even buy a Mig 29 and fly it home. Good luck though you need tons of paper work FAA approval And I believe that after burners have to be removed.

I live in England and there is a local airfield near me with a meteor in peices ontop of a shipping container, just hanging about. Dreamed about buying it for ages. It would be my ultimate dream come true from when I made a model of one as a kid.
