Having had 6 pair of VC pigeons in the late 1960 and early 1970s they do not use fur to line their nests--just a pile of sticks of various sizes. They like a quiet area away from other birds and animals with very little human contact. May I suggest planting Shrubs around the outside of your aviary to give them more privacy. Love your channel.
Could Spanish miss it such be if interest? Going by “feels” emotion not knowledge. Just soft sounds more comfortable but eagles use all stick so probably not lolol Glad you posted 😁
My sister is 57 and I'm 53 and since we were little girls, any time we would see 2 birds breeding, we would call it Twitterpating! I don't know how we came up with that but I was so excited when you showed your your birds Twitterpating! I'm praying for a couple of eggs soon! You all have worked so hard to make things just perfect for them! Sending lots of prayers! Stay blessed! Love you too!!! 💖🤗🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you Brooke for sharing your freeze dry testing. I love seeing all the things that you can do AND seeing you and Jason’s reaction 😊I continue to hope for success for the Victorian Crown pigeon
Brooke please be careful with the fiber, Lester and Jami had issues with their baby ducks getting tangled in the alpaca fibers. Love watching your channel. God bless you all.
Love this video. Learned so much. Praying for Grandaddy and Miss Shirley as well as all family and friends. Lean unto one another. God bless have a great day.
Thank you so much, Brooke. This is so exciting. So interesting and informative. They’re so beautiful. I just love seeing Rocky/Bandit in the background. Precious boys 🙏🥰
@Mrs Cog Hill Farm, is there ANYthing you can't do?!? You never cease to amaze me! I really love your videos and you are such a great teacher! I wonder if your new barn will include some sort of 'classroom', where you could have workshops or something like that?🤔💝🙏🌟🦋💐 Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with all of us 🌏🌎🌍🌟🤩👍.
Thanks Brooke! We always had birds dive bombing us on shearing day to pick up loose pieces of fiber to line their nests. We've had great success with using alpaca fiber in our yard here at home. We use grapevine balls stuffed with fiber and hang them in the trees. The birds love pulling little bits of fluffy fiber out for nest building. The great thing about alpaca is it's untreated and natural. They aren't really bothered by fleas or ticks (and if they do get a tick it's usually in their ears or on their face because the fiber is too thick everywhere else for them to reach down to the skin level). It's a truly wonderful, natural way for birds to add a soft lining to their nest. Good luck with the VCP's and thanks again!
I absolutely love the freeze dry videos. I agree watching Brooke & Jason taste test is the best part of the videos. I could watch a lot more of these videos!!!
Can you cut the alpaca fleece into short strips. I say this because one turkey poult at Ima Survivor Sanctuary got it's feet wrapped up in the alpaca fleece. Jami had to cut it off. Just a suggestion. Thanks for showing the birds.
My 11ib chi-terrier LOVES broccoli and other vegetables, snap peas, carrots, Brussel sprouts , she enjoys all of them lightly steamed and some raw. Broccoli is g her favorite * edit I peel that outer part of the stems and they taste great
After seeing the birds in the bird park having more structures to explore and hide under maybe giving your gorgeous pigeons some smaller shrubs around the aviary for privacy from outside animals and maybe some rockery structures to hide and play around to keep them busy. Love and hugs.
Marycarl is usually right when it comes to birds so I will look forward to Victorian Crown Pigeon eggs in a week or so. 😊 I wonder if the calcium supplements helps with the development of the egg shells, is that what it's for? 🥰
9:09 I'm afraid that either the birds and/or the baby could tangle their feet in it or swallow some of it with food. Once this starts flying around in little pieces, it might be hard to get rid of it.
This is an awesome video 💕 Brooke is so patient when explaining what she learned about the Victoria Crown Pigeons. Brooke is doing everything possible to make them happy. I've got my fingers crossed for babies this time around. 🤞 Take care 💕💕
Go VCP Go!!! ❤ 🤞 Love all the freeze drying options, keep them coming 😊 Thanks Brooke for all that you share and I’m SO proud of you for riding some rides! YOLO!!!!! ❤
I truly hope that that egg is on its way. What an amazing journey that will be and be able to see it grow from chick into an adult Pigeon. Can't wait to see it! I wish I was young enough and able to have a garden, and it would be filled with veggies just for me as my husband doesn't like the veggies that are actually good for you. I may have to travel down to my sister's house for a few days and use her dehydrator. Sometime soon, hopefully, depending on our health issues. I love that the dogs loved the broccoli. That surprised me. God's blessings to you all from Proctor Minnesota!
Hi Brooke! Just be aware that the fibers dont tangle on their feet or the possible babies feet (like on Robert Day`s small parrot!!) that one almost lost his foot due to a small thread of a towel Robert used to sit them on when feeding them. I hope the feed changes are uccessful! God bless
Oh Brooke, thank you for the update on the beautiful birds. I am so interested and did not want to bug you with questions. I am praying for an egg and a Victorian Crown baby ❤
Are you able to regularly get close enough to the birds to inspect their feet? I ask because at the time that we had birds it was advised against giving them hair or fiber due to it tangling and cutting off circulation of toes/feet. Apparently it can happen quick.
Do sweet potatoes next. There a healthy snack for dogs.❤❤❤❤ I just love your videos. I wish I come afford a freezer dryer and have room for a garden. Tell Mary Carl, I think she would make a great bird veterinarian.❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏❣️🎈 I love your hold family.
I love your freeze dry videos. I have learned so much. You have convinced me i need a freeze drier. I think me and a few family members are going to go in together and get one of the Harvestright freezers.
What about planting more shrubs an plants inside your aviary to give them more privacy instead of it being mostly a large open space. An planting some shrubs around the outside as well. Seeing the VCP walking under the shrubs at that aviary leads me to think they would enjoy that. I would sure love to see you get babies from those two. I know you guys would be absolutely thrilled! They are such gorgeous birds ❤ Lester an Jaimes baby turkeys twice got their feet tangled up in the sheared alpaca fiber about a month or two ago. One was pretty tangled pretty tight so I’d be careful with that if they lay an egg.
Hey yall! If I had it to do over, I would have bought two medium-sized freeze dryers. That way you could run two different types of things at the same time (eggs and broccoli or candy and apple slices) and sometimes I just don't have enough of something to fill the large. Cauliflower is like popcorn without the kernels. FD s😊weet corn is like candy
I have the medium freeze dryer. I can do 14 eggs per tray. I put them in a large glass measuring/ mixing bowl and use my mixing wand to “beat” the eggs. You don’t want any foam just a nice mix. Put your trays in the machine. Pull them out just slightly and slowly pour the egg mix in the tray. This is my best advice for you when doing freeze dried eggs.
Hey Brooke, We have the medium freeze dryer also and I usually can get 18 eggs per tray, I crack 18 at a time into a large bowl and use my immersion blender to scramble them, pour them onto the tray then pop them in the freezer to pre freeze them, works fantastic😊
Fingers crossed! I would love to see Brooke find an egg in that Hugh nest. Oh my goodness on the freeze dried broccoli. If it would taste half ad good as you all act like,I'd love to get one for myself.. Great video. So happy you had a great vac. Chestnut Hills Farm is very entertaining. Love that family.
Those ropes they had at Discovery Cove looked looked fun for the birds but your bird may not even be interest in anything but walking on the ground. Love watching all your videos, thank you for making my day brighter.
At the North Carolina Zoo they had a aviary with Victoria Crown Pigeons and they had a lot of shrubbery and plants on the ground along with rocks, hollow logs and the birds seemed really happy with the setup. Of course they had lots of different kinds of birds but yours might need stimulation. Their enclosure just seems so barren.
I heard that Harvest Right has put out an "update." From what I understand you should be able to update your unit so that you don't have to indicate whether your items are pre- Frozen or not. It already detects that, apparently. It's worth giving them a call and double-checking! I could be totally incorrect. I heard someone on another channel talking about it. And it sounded as if everyone who already has one can update their system. I love your channel. I've loved your journey for a while now. I'm excited to maybe meet you one day ☺️ I've been dreaming of my own homestead since 2019. Small steps! I'll be 52 this year but it's never the wrong time. I haven't bought my harvest Right freeze dryer yet but that will be by the end of this year. I'm going to my first HOA CONFERENCE in October and I hope they are offering the visitors a special PRICE! I know you have an affiliate link that I will be using. For sure! 🤗
Brooke make sure you freeze dry some green beans they are delicious frozen raw and carrots also freeze in coins raw , just about any veggie taste great freeze dried it intensifies the flavor ! I hope the VC P’ do lay an egg soon , how exciting ! I’m so glad you got to talk to the handlers and get so much great info about their food ! Great video I hope you’ll make more and I love cooking and the freeze drying is a wonderful addition to your page, please do more of them !! Thanks Brooke and yes veggies are great for our pets , my handicapped fur baby loves all veggies even pickles 🤣! God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻
Brooke, we are freeze drying our eggs - 80 dozen thus far. What we found through trial and error: while 2 dozen fills the trays up, it takes longer to freeze dry with the middle still being moist part of the time. We did 2 runs of 2 dozen per tray then the third run we put 1 dozen per tray. The 1 dozen did freeze dry quicker, but it was difficult getting the eggs off the tray because it was thin. As before, we did 2 runs of a dozen per tray. 3rd trial was 1.5 dozen per tray. We’ve not changed since then. The dry time is good with no moist spots and it’s easy to crush the eggs into a granular powder to put in bags right on the tray or to break up into pieces and bag. I just put 18 eggs in my mixer bowl, turn it on low and let it mix until all eggs are blended well then pour into the trays. We have reconstituted some and one recommendation was 1 Tbls of powder to 1 Tbls of water. We found this to be too watery when we were cooking them so we now use 2 tsp of water and that seems to be good. 1 Tbls might be good if you were using them for baking but for making scrambled eggs for breakfast, it just seemed to us that it was too watery.
I hope your new changes for Victoria crowned pigeons works well for them. After the mating and everything you have done there’s nothing else to do but to wait and hope for the best. You really have done your research Brooke! I love freeze dried foods I’m saving up for one. ❤
Brooke, my hubby and I have four extra trays so we can have four in the freeze dyer and four in the freezer ready to go. Makes it just a bit faster if your wanting to do.back to back sessions. We just finished up with pork chops and roast beef last week. Going to try broccoli, thanks for the idea😁
Btw broccoli stems taste fabulous if you peel them then either eat them raw or slice them up & steam them with your broccoli flourets! Just delicious & no waste!! It's just the outside of the stem that's fibrous, the inside is tender!!👍👍
One of Jami's chickens had the fiber wrap around their leg. It was fairly tight. May want to keep an eye out for that. Your birds are beautiful and very healthy looking.
Good luck.hoping for the best! It was wonderful to see Mart Carl, even for just a minute. Love you Guys, can’t get enough of the animals Being a gardener, very interesting watching all the gardening episodes.
18 beaten eggs fill each tray. You can use fewer, but I fill the trays to near the top, pouring them on the tray while it is inside the freeze dryer. Pre freezing the beaten eggs would make the transfer easier, but fill the trays after they are level in the freezer.
Makes a lot of sense with the calcium in the food and well it looks like maybe an egg is coming soon in the that glorious nest they built I know when we had chickens, we would give them oyster shells and laying hens need the oyster shells because they need the calcium to lay hard-shelled eggs kind of the same deal. Broccoli is so good for you too it looks delicious and so good for dogs too and cauliflower is one of my favorite veg.
I think MaryCarl’s indoor birds would love the broccoli. I’m excited about the VCP’s mating I am keeping my fingers crossed. I looked up the gestation period for VCP eggs and it said they could lay 1 or 2 eggs! I hope this all works for y’all.
We have a large and medium freeze dryer. I kept both going nonstop after harvesting corn last summer. 18 eggs per tray in the medium works great. Fits good in the medium sized HR bags as well.
I've used a friend's freeze dryer to do eggs & her trays held about 2 dozen each. They turned out great. To rehydrate just use equal parts water & egg powder. You'll never know they were freeze dried.
What about giving them some berries like blueberries, raspberries and black berries. With their food. Maybe plant some more plants on the floor because babies will need places to hide. Maybe some shade loving plants. A grape vine or something on the sides.
Morning. I got my harvest right delivered wired and ready to go but scared to death to try it. It’s so expensive. I’m afraid to break it. Going to do dill pickles first. Then freeze dry chicken cubes for dog treats. It is what I’ve always used to train dogs.
Good luck! I Just received my freeze dried order from Deep South Sugar Shack. And I got the Freeze Dried Pickle Taffy. Not really crazy about it. But maybe just freeze dried pickles would be good ! Good luck 🤞
@@venidamcdaniel1913 I’m hoping God will do the same for me. I have a lot of stomach issues and was hoping eating my food freeze dried would help my digestion and since I’m limited on what I can eat that it might give me something different to look forward to. I’m disabled and have very little money but would love to try something new and interesting to eat. God bless everyone and I hope the VCP have an egg soon!!! ❤️🥰❤️
Oh my goodness RU-vid unsuited me from your channel. Good thing I thought to check for a video myself. I know it happens to most of us occassionally. So happy I realized I was missing you. I've been wondering about the VC pigeons but didn't want to ask because I see how many people mention it in the lives. I'm glad you brought it up and glad you asked an expert for care advice. Even if the female never lays an egg or they never successfully hatch a chick they are beautiful birds and a great addition to the farm.
It makes perfect sense to me to feed the VCP's parrot feed. It probably has higher nutrition. Also makes perfect sense to feed softer food/feed too. If you think about it, what do they eat in the wild? Berry's, insects, etc. & those are usually softer. I still think they might need softer material to line the nest bowl. The nest bowl needs to be soft for the eggs & the chicks. You could use grass clippings. Shredded paper/newspaper. & yes, animal or human hair. They might even use soft leaves. Anything more natural & soft. They also use the softer material to pack in around them so no cold air gets in. Also will use it to help keep the chicks warm(once they hatch). Some birds are very picky in what they want in the nest & how they want it. They might have been waiting for warmer weather to mate & lay eggs. 🤞🤞🤞
Thank you for walking me through your trip and learning about your pigeons. Hope it works out for y'all. Thank you for sharing your video today with me❤
Hey Brooke,im so glad you had the chance to ask questions about these Pigeons . Its so exciting to know there may be an 🥚 coming🌝. Isnt that somthin how they want to join in the nest making☺️. Keep us in the know! JO JO IN VT 💞
Seeing them mate is encouraging and I'm certainly praying that she lays that egg very soon! I can't remember what you had said on how many weeks or months of incubation period? I'll have to look it up. I'm so excited that we are getting closer everyday! If I weren't a Christian, I'd say, "fingers crossed" but I am, so instead I'll pray that it happens real soon!! I can't wait to see the video pop up as soon as she lays that egg and Brooke will let us know immediately ❗❗ How exciting ✖💜✖💜✖💜✖
I also have a medium Harvest Right. The machine gets to -40 (negative 40) degrees for sublimation. Let us know how their digesting broccoli goes. . . indoors. .. ..
🥦🥦🥦 When I use a whole broccoli, I peel all of the stems and stalks and cut up into french fry thickness to eat raw with a little salt. It tastes much like a radish, we love them!
For the Victoria Crown Pigeons: I agree with more shrubs on inside of shelter. You could also wrap the bottom of the walls with four feet of landscape cloth or something opaque to give them privacy while the other shrubs are growing.
Brooke, I NEVER get just broccoli florets! This is what I do and it works out to be very tender and delicious! Both broccoli and cauliflower (even larger stocks of asparagus ends), I cut off the florets. Then take the stocks and even the center/main stock and peel the outer skin off (that is where the tougher fibers are). I like to save what I peel off to use in making homemade veggie stock (save by tossing in a freezer bag into the freezer until ready to make the veggie stock and after making, strain it out, then send to compost pile). After you have removed the skin, what you have left is what I call "the heart" of the broccoli/cauliflower (or asparagus) stock. Think of it as the same principle as "the hearts of palm". The core of the stock (or stem) is very tender (raw is crunchy but not tough/chewy) and has a wonderful flavor! It is great to eat raw or cooked. And if you slice the saved "hearts" or centers and freeze dry them, they will be like veggie chips! Of course you can sprinkle them with any kind of dry seasoning, freeze dried grated cheese or dry packs of salad dressing seasoning mixes! 😋👍 Oh I hope the extra calcium and diet changes help the Victoria Crown Pigeon to lay her egg! That makes sense, I know with most birds when they are breeding their diet needs change. This is eggciting!🤗
Hi Brooke that sounded awesome to find out all you did from discovery world in their beautiful aviary but also fantastic for you to be able to share with them your and their enormous nest they’ve made. I do hope we have eggs very soon. The air fryer is a real game changer can do so much in it can see why you love using it too. Was wondering though if like with the broccoli did they still taste of broccoli though. Will you still do canning also to save your produce. Great video Brooke very creative. Loving your channel. Have a great day take care and God Bless. 🙏💕
Harvest Right has a new FD that is X large it just came recently you might want to take a look. Sense you all have a nice large garden area. I watch your all every day and love the way your animals are cared for.
The biggest Harvest Right you can get is 8-Tray Large Stainless Steel Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer, Homedepot carries it, my praying God makes a way for me to get one for my family. It fits double the trays and the trays are larger. ❤
