After the California CQ Party contest I realized I needed to change my shack around ALOT. So I put in a new bench top, widening the original significantly and a shelf for my radio equipment. So far, its been awesome. Its easier than ever to get on the air now.
Big thanks to Palomar Engineers for providing the viewers a coupon code for their RF suspression gear. I use their RFI kits in both my car and in my shack and its how I get my low noise floor! Use "HRCC73" at checkout. I recommend the ICOM 7300 RFI kit but they offer RFI kits for any application. bit.ly/34kfLHX

Hello Josh & Greetings from across the briney from County Clare, Ireland. My comment is a bit late 😎. congratulations on your redesigned shack. I'm in the process of doing the same here. I will upload some new pics soon on QRZ. I have the Ameritron AL-811HXCE which I have modified thanks to W8JI. New comer or old fart (me) the AL-811 is a great amp. Simple to modify and repair, if necessary. I have fitted 4 x 572B's and find them to be great valves (tubes) which work great especially on CW which gives me around 800W. 73 Josh, always enjoy your videos. EI6DP

After completing the floor job in my home, my office is being redone and I plan to keep all my radios in a cabinet and only bring out the ones I am using at the time. Nothing will be permanent and I'll be able to move things around as my interests change. Radio gear stuck in one place tends to attract more dust than use...

Looks great! Good job! In my experience I have found that I like my main HF rig on the lower shelf. Reason number one is my arm gets tired holding it up in the air while tediously turning the VFO scanning up and down the band for hours. Secondly, although the radio is eye level and easy to see on the top shelf, I find the radios speaker sounds muffled above ear level. It seems clearer below ear level on the bottom shelf. But as you pointed out, each person has different needs and opinions so, if it works out for ones self then it's perfect!

Very clean. A added touch would be to separate the head from your 2730 and mount it on the shelf face. Mine didn't come with the kit but had the cable so I just used Velcro.

Nice setup. I too am always changing my station, and planning some changes again. Been a Ham for a bit over 25 years now and still haven't needed an Amp. It's mostly in the "Antenna System". I got an 811H when my dad became a SK, but never used it. Traded it for a Kenwood TS-930. Keep the Videos coming, enjoy what others are doing, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.

Now that's a good looking shack! Hope it works better for your Friday night live action too keeping everything within arms reach and within the shot! One nit ... Air? Seriously? I might be a little late but for anyone out there doing projects I wanted to suggest using those metal shelves like the one back there with the little zigzags on the edges. I got a few of those in different sizes and jigsawed some pine wood to fit on each level to make a solid surface and then as a touch I stained them making a pretty pleasing shine of metal and natural lumber, -all pretty cheap too (looks cool'n retro with metal knobs and space geek stuff). Those metal shelves are prefect for stacking and compartmentalizing electronic equipment on and are thin enough to allow for airflow if you have anything hot back there. They also come in a flat black if stainless isnt your thing. Get a few arranged and you'll have an aesthetically cohesive match flowing through the whole room; if you ever have to unplug everything and move'm or adjust the levels they arent too much of a hassle. The little edges with the zigzag shapes are good for hangin stuff like keys and ballcaps on too LoL. Right now I mostly use mine for my regular computer and old retro stereo/photo and astronomy gear. HAM radio's the next endevour though! You could probably use the one they have designed for hanging clothes on and re-purpose it into a really cool hybrid of a desk and then stack all the gear off to the left of right on the shelves. They can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. I think its the COOLEST looking desk no one is selling. Boy I cant wait to get into this! They also have attachable wheels so you can roll them around. It also makes the shack look really clean and flush.

Great work Josh. You may want to consider moving the 7300 on the lower shelf near the keyboard. Having it that high and tuning/adjusting filters, etc may get a bit fatiguing when raising your arm. At least is was for me when I had a similar setup. 73 AI6ZV

Great job! I would recommend more focus on ergonomics. The items you "touch" most need to be closest. For example, if you use the tune knob on the radio the most, it needs to be front and center... Not as important if you use mostly computer control, of course. I like to locate my power supplies under the desk, because they don't really require much interaction. Flip the switch once, and that's it... Boom mic with a foot switch frees up desk space and lets you keep both hands on the keyboard. Keep up the good work! 73 de K9ZF

Hi Josh, Wonderful that you are experimenting with your shack. I will point out however the flaw with your layout. You haven't "felt" it yet... But your 7300 (main rig) should NOT be up high like that! You will wear yourself out reaching up to make adjustments, tuning, using the touch screen, etc. Ergonomics is your friend, friend! I have my unit table level & use a mousepad with a gel wrist bump to reduce stress on wrist. For long bouts of use, I have a towel that I fold up to about 9 inches wide (and many layers thick) to rest my arm on. Don't laugh, it saves the elbow from having soreness & big red spot; while not leaving dents in the desk (ok kidding about that...). Your Amp should be on top to provide superior air flow & allow heat to rise away. I'd bet, if you reread the manual, it talks about maintaining an open space around the unit. You might want to check & recheck your power supply for heat too, which will rise into your Swr meter. Keeping your operating area clear of stuff, junk, tools, projects, etc. Is really useful. I have a totally separate table for that on the other side of my station. I still have issues keeping that area mess-free. Keep experimenting though, it's good for the brain! Kinda like a big, 3-D version of Tetris... oh crap! I think I just dated myself again. 73 - John - N7GHZ
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 4 года назад
All good points. I have a few ways to control the 7300 now. And based on my arm placement it seems to be right in reach. I also have a external vfo, ptt for it. The shelf next to the amp doesn’t block any of the vents or the blower. I used it last night monitoring the temps and seems never got warmer that it traditionally is. Pretty happy with it so far.
