This is just my opinion, but YOU are what this channel is about. Yes you are an entrepreneur, amongst other things, but I don't think this channel would be as successful as it's going to be without you. Your English is great! (That's coming from a Texan so take it for what it's worth.) Your setup is perfect and your videos are understandable and flowing. I came here like many because of the router video and then you surprised me by adding in entrepreneurship and startup steps. The videos are informative AND motivational. I subscribed because I wanted to take this journey with you. I'm positive I am not the only one. I've met a few intelligent people in my time. They generally fall into two categories: Those that know something; and those that know something and can teach it to others. There's a lot fewer of the latter and it is a blessing sometimes to have someone able to explain so even I can understand. Your videos are niche, yet not so niche. Lots of people WANT to be an entrepreneur yet are not sure or are afraid to take that first step. So that's a massive audience. The tech might be niche. I came because I was interested in ideas about a router, I subscribed because I found so much more. Let's go Tomaž!

It would be great for the router to have Matter/Thread support as expansion, it’ll be future proof + high value added feature…nevertheless as you have already pointed out, it may increase the CE (conformity) certification test price for wireless products. If it’s viable for expansion cards please go ahead. Looking forward to see more videos of the router development!

Yes x86 would open up the OS options dramatically, but ARM is more power efficient and cheaper. Which in my opinion is way more important for a low power and competitive dedicated router. There are already a million x86 options out there, we don't need another one.

@@tomazzamanyes, please do ARM - more performance per watt. Plus, x86 will eventually die. Also, having thermal posts / pads integrated in the router enclosure for passive cooling would be awesome. Not sure how easy or expensive that would be to engineer. You can find plenty of passively cooled raspberry pi cases with the thermal posts for reference.
@pingtime
@pingtime 8 месяцев назад
The biggest problem with ARM (atleast right now), is, you cant easily use your own OS in it, I'm fed up with ARM hurdels. If somehow the product is discontinued and didnt get any software update anymore, less savvy user only can hope from community build image or just retiring the stuff altogether. Theres tons of example of this, from a startup to huge multimilion dollar company, and this is the same reason, why Raspberry pi still dominate ARM SBC market thx for its software support. And, seriously, using low power x86 system vs ARM for routing purposes didnt save you a million dollar a month, unless you deployed million of these on a datacenter, even if you live in Germany/Italy which electricity price is insane. I woulndt, in any circumstances, trade flexibility with just 0.0000001W of power saving a year
@honestgoat
@honestgoat 8 месяцев назад
@@pingtime I know you're being hyperbolic when you say "trade flexibility with just 0.0000001W of power saving a year". But the power difference between most ARM soc's and even some of the most efficient embedded x86 soc's, like n5000 or even the newer n100 for example is quite significant and should not be trivialised. Yes, x86 soc's are designed to be more flexible allowing them to perform a multitude of tasks, however ARM soc's can be designed to be use case specific and extremely efficient at performing certain tasks. Picking the right arm soc for a router can lower the power draw massively. In some cases performing specific tasks as efficiently as significantly more powerful x86 soc's at a fraction of the power draw. Which could contribute to quite significantly lower operating costs over the life of the device. As well as lowering the upfront cost per unit, being easier to cool allowing for more modest passive cooling solutions, reducing the amount of heat inside a rack; Which can lower other environmental factors also reducing operating costs. As a result of less heat and smaller cooling solutions, unit size can be reduced thereby saving valuable rack space which also lends to more cost savings. There are many reasons why datacentres are investing heavily in ARM. There are very real operating cost savings, not just in terms of power usage. And in terms of software support, yes ARM support for OS's can disappear, but it is not that common for major projects. OS's like OPNSense and OpenWRT aren't going anywhere and are maintained by large communities. In the case of OpenWRT, it can be compiled to run on a multitude of platforms with an abundance of easy to follow guides available online. So while you do raise some valid points, in this specific case I think your concerns are not warranted. As I stated in my initial comment, there is already a plethera of x86 embedded devices out there to be used as routers. If you are concerned about this project going with ARM, then perhaps one of them may be better suited for your needs. And that is perfectly fine. This project wont suit everyone. No one device can cater to everyones needs without being prohibitively expensive. Which is why there are so damn many solutions out there.

Man does RU-vid really know how to grab my attention. I think (could be wrong) I've watched most of the relevant videos around this "premium router". It looks cool and super sleek but admittedly I have two concerns/doubts. What is the need for a "premium" router and what exactly is it that is the selling point of "premium". It seems the "premium" part is just that the case is made of metal, aluminum in this case. I don't mean for the first critic to be based on just the looks as I've bought plenty of things based on looks alone I just want to understand is that really the only selling point for "premium" here, maybe also the 10Gb support? Personally, I don't really care how most of my equipment looks. It hopefully stays in the rack in my basement in a closet being neither seen nor heard. But again, don't take this point too hard/the wrong way I completely understand there is still an aesthetic choice to anything we buy. Overall its a cool idea and if the price is right I'd probably buy one just to have something to tinker with but what are your qualification/experience in something like this for it to succeed? Not to pull some gatekeeper bs logic here but a router is something that is meant to be solid and work without hiccups. Cisco, Palo, Netgate, heck even Ubiquiti I'm sure spend a lot of time tightly controlling the integration of software and hardware. With 10's or 100's of engineers with a lot of expertise in the space. Personally I own and use a Netgate 5100 and 6100 and I know there is a very tight integration their of hardware (similar of-the-shelf approach) and software (pfSense Netgate's Software). How will you ensure this hardware which it seems like has mostly been picked already will actually function well with the purported software solutions (OPNsense and VyOS). I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm excited for you to even but when the bugs and issues start rolling in what is the plan? Nothing worse than an expensive paperweight. I'm not really one to leave RU-vid comments, so this might be the last :) but I wish you nothing but the best on this endeavor and can't wait to see find out more details in time.
@tomazzaman
@tomazzaman 9 месяцев назад
When it comes to looks, there are two camps of people, from what I see. People either care about the looks and build quality or they don't. Take Apple for example. The build rock-solid gear (not saying their competitors aren't) that lasts a really long time and looks very premium. And obviously, it works well for them. I belong in this camp. And on the other "side", there are companies that make gear that's often put in cheap plastic, but still durable and powerful. As to my credentials? I'm a nobody really, but made a name for myself in the open source community (WordPress, to be specific) so I excel in two things: a) Bringing the right people to work on the right things, and b) Being open and transparent. Try getting a piece of the source code for Ubiquiti. Mission impossible. Or even just some basic documentation. Nonexistent. Not to mention the cloud integration. I guess you could describe the main reason for this project starting to take shape in one word: frustration. I was simply too frustrated with the current offering and I have decided to do something about it. And if you check the comments people have been making on my videos past couple of days, I'm not alone. Will there be issues and problems? Most likely. But I'll do everything in my power to see this through.

On the CPU/chassis cooling thought, yes it can be done and is quite nice to not need a fan, but if the case can't vent the heat fast enough through passive room or server rack conditions, you'll either need an external fan or to add surface area to the chassis (fins), which would compromise the aesthetics. Regardless, I'm super curious to see how this evolves!

I'm following along on this. I'm don't really care about amd64 vs ARM, its primary usage is firewall/router and not home lab server - there are a lot better choices for homelab servers (for running VMs and other services) than what you are looking into building, so the m.2 and PCIe slot you mention is "overkill" IMHO. When you get it made and you are ready to sell it then having a local re-seller would be a nice thing as I've never been to Slovenia and a MC trip there would be a nice add-on to the investment also making it more personal than some random company on the other side of the globe. A coreboot bios for secure and fast boot could also be a valuable solution. I have seen so many videos about routers and different solutions, your video is very informative and simple. Your channel will live on because you have a good idea on how to inform others. How to set up your system via USB C or boot with a preconfigured flash image and a web front end, that would be interesting to me.... maybe with a graal vm executable as a web-server service for secure login and small binary .... i am curious which ideas you will take up and use as a possible alternative for your router.

Then I saw my comment pop up 😅 I got notification of your reply, but my intention on replying was lost in the noise of everything else going on. My intention was to be playful/humorous in that original comment, but I can understand if it was still offensive in any way and apologize for that. While I can at least say how much I (and others, I'm sure) appreciate a bit less volume for such an intimate setting, I still feel bad for how rude it was for me to address it as poorly as I did. I'm not brooding over it or anything, just empathizing with how vulnerable one can be when putting effort into sharing something they're excited and passionate about. Anywho, as I mentioned in that first comment and exemplified with making sure to manually check your page (such weird timing on your release haha), I'm glad your content was suggested to me. I'm not at all tech illiterate, but the more abstract things like programming/networking are generally overwhelming; so it's appreciated how well you do to make these things accessible for dummies like me to be able to follow along despite how little I actually know on the subject. I just took a screenshot of your comment because it was the first I found when making the video 😂 I'm also the type of person to sometimes make lighthearted comments only to wonder afterwards if maybe I should have kept my mouth shut. Hi. Embedded guy here. You absolutely want an ARM SOC; you are not repurposing a old Dell mini-tower for use with pfSense - you are making an appliance. And trying to get a niche (yes, that's right) CPU like x86 to work in an appliance when ARM is completely and totally dominant in this space is just asinine.

In production cost is about between more expensive machined aluminum option and the metal sheet cheap option... There's some Suppliers like ProtoCase in Canada that'll help with those machining cost go down

Why not make the case out of thick aluminum sheet metal? Make two U-shaped pieces, one slim ( sides and front) and one wide ( top, rear and bottom) and slide them together. Would be much cheaper and easier to manufacture.

Yes, I use Matter over Thread in my home, but this could very well be an expansion card. Matter isn't that fleshed out yet and besides people living on the edge like me I guess, people aren't as interested in it quite yet. I'd rather have better WiFi standards, antennas and protocols supported from the router or the ability to upgrade this later as new standards come out, I don't know how well this would be as most WiFi cards aren't made for "router" application, but this could be something interesting to research.

It's a shame in regard policitcs getting in the way of developments such as yours. Been thinging about a possiable 'box' option, how about extruded sides that will interlock at the four corners, and if not square (the corners can be rounded) different width extrusions for any rectangular size, with machines top and bottom plates, the four corners top and bottom having securing screws to both attach top and bottom cae parts as well as keep the extrusions locked together. In regard Zwave of Thread, I have a dedicated home assistant unit. Are you intending to be able to run other applications on the 'Router' as I'm not sure that makes good security sense, or was this just to give an IP conection to a thread or Zwave gateway withing the router.. Your thoughts on this would be welcome. I look forward to more ..... Oh and being English your's is a great deal better than my Slovene 😁

My comments to your last lot of videos...... (I did subscribe just because of your creating a router project). 1) I think the folded sheet metal, would be almost as good. Maybe aluminum block for the top/bottom for cooling and the rest as sheet metal (dont know if chemically they wont react) 2) The TR-069 protocol, those that say it allows the ISP to spy on you.... They can already watch your network traffic... For me the concern is security (see that hack in the early days of that miltary issue, where the management protocol/vlan was broken into) 3) Internet to the switch. To the nay-says I say, and? There is no security issues there (even if it was untagged traffic), as a good network engineer would immediately put it into a VLAN and then route the VLAN to their router for processing. And also how else to they think their interwebs get to them without switches..... considering a lot of ISPs use switches as routers 4) For the router with ARM vs x86 - In your research you mentioned VyOS. Would you work with the VyOS team to get an Arm release? 5) I know this is maybe not in your niche goals, could you do a series on how to setup a dev environment including the auto testing for something like building your OpenWRT / PFsense / OpenSense / etc. for your product?

TR069 on the client side is bullshit because they can run it on their router side and capture a copy of the packets there . Totally agree with out on 7:28. People are full of BS. Routing on the internet is always open for capture, that's how the network works and that's why we have TLS for secrecy.

Coming from a US Government Network Engineer background, line speeds, throughput, and bandwidth are not all created equal. Imagine 10G int to carrier, well that is line speeds, but who said the carrier will give you 10Gb throughout or bandwidth. But lets say they did give you the throughput. Your data traverses many carriers and some of them may not have the 10 or 100 Terabit backbone to carry your 10G bandwidth so that your transmission stays equal. And with providers like YT and other video carriers they throttle traffic based on agreements with ISP, its unlikely they would agree to provide 1 session 10G while other sessions get 100mb or even 1 gig. Unless you're going to establish a VPN to VPN gateway session, then you want traffic demand, the single point 10g line speed is only as good as the 1st hop.
@tomazzaman
@tomazzaman 9 месяцев назад
Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification! My use case: I work with large files and would love to edit them directly on the server, I don't care much about the internet speeds in regards to 10G - I need them internally.

I use Home Assistant and sensors with Zigbee. I don't think I would want my router to be able to have anything to do with that, simply to keep things separated. @@1HotLegendLS nope that is incorrect, router is a completly different device, router is a device that connects multiple networks together(in most normal networks that would be 2 wider internet and your local area network) and routes packets between them, Switch on other hand is a device that connects devices in a single network. While there do exist routing switches they are an enterprise level hardware for very high speed networks. What you normally think of a router is actually a AIO/hybrid device that combines capabilities of a switch Router AP and a modem or in case of fiber ONT.
