They're everywhere on social media! Strong opinions, often voiced in a condescending way. You're preferring const over let? Think again!
You're using Angular? Is that a joke? You get the point ...
I really hate that part of social media and the "developer world". What about you?

You are absolutely right, toxicity in coding must stop. Focus should be on outcome.

Hi! Max it is right ... I agree with him all the way on this. In my opinion, there are so called web developers that copy what others are doing and make their video ...

Right on point Max! The problem is not having a strong opinion, but rather, what we do with it. Lively debates and discussions are useful, but tearing someone down because of a difference of opinion is destructive. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

As the number of developers in the world grows, the more idiots are brought into the field. It's the same in other areas, I think you have to ignore these people.

It is what it is, this video helped on two things allowing Max to vent and also for new developers. It will help them open their eyes to this type of critiques and make them feel less confused

Coming from the field of epidemiology to web development, i still go by a core principle in epidemiological research which is that you can do great research with basic techniques and tools, provided that the question you are answering is relevant. Use sophisticated tools or techniques only if you need them. Applying that to web dev, you can build great apps using basic/fundamental tools and techniques, as long as you app solves a relevant problem that help people.

Totally agree. Strong opinions should be shared as that, opinions, not advices. There are ways to generate engagement without saying “do this or x”, like “why I prefer this over this”. Maybe the impact isn’t the same but the impact on the first is not assured to be positive, so we need to assume that responsibility. The other thing that bothers me is that because of that kind of message, ppl now could interpret debate as an attack, instead of just contributions to the conversation. So toxicity grows in those threads and we find ourselves constantly clarifying that we’re not against the person, just sharing our thoughts because that’s kinda what the threads are for

All social media became a sensationalistic place to sale stuff instead of helpful place to help everybody! In my humble opinion! :)

In both coding and life, I tend to differentiate between constructive opinions, which come with background or explanations, and those merely seeking attention by spewing toxic remarks. While you mentioned that such behavior is prevalent on the internet and social media, I hold a different view - I believe that people, in general, exhibit such behaviors, and the behavior we see on social platforms is just a reflection of this inherent nature. If an opinion is constructive, I'm more than willing to engage and even delve deeper into it. However, if it's solely aimed at garnering attention, I tend to disregard it. There are simply too many individuals clamoring for attention, especially on social platforms, to address them all. Keep up the good work, and don't let yourself be distracted by unconstructive remarks.

I totally get what you're saying. I think the developer world is really toxic and people just like to hype the things that they work with. So why we don't take a step back and agree that Angular is a better framework than React.

Hi max, Been a fan of your course for years and learnt a lot from them namely, angular, react, flutter, go, next (learning now). Just had 2 questions, 1. Will there be an update on GO with more stuff as there is in node? 2. Will there be a course on Android development? If possible need an update or a new course for flutter on desktop and flutter on web. Thank you for the wonderful courses once again.

I don't think trying to convince others is in itself a bad thing. Putting people down for their decisions definitely is, though. We all like what we like. Maybe we're excited about what we like. But I think sometimes we need to take a step back and consider why something might work for one person but not another. Great video! I can't believe you would wear a YELLOW hoodie, though? Like, come on, are you serious? Blue is objectively better. lol
@mikebell3579

My rule of thumb is that those who are toxic about opinions on coding are just that, toxic and they don't/can't contribute to a team. Toxic people will have toxic communications. Great video and good way to call it out.

When you invest time and energy on a stack, that you use to generate value that feeds your family - its important said stack stays relevant. Tribalism - its in our DNA and goes as deep into our ancestral history. As a developer with 20+ years of experience I dont really get involved with these debates because I can adapt to any stack in a few weeks. But I just wanted to point out its not social media problem - social media is amplifying problems with human nature itself.

Most developers do not even know about byte, word, dword or qword, they just caught up in the frameworks which gets updated for each 6 months and preivous old frameworks knowledge becomes useless. Guys learn something which is not replaceable. I should charge a million dollar for this advice

You are far from alone. Unfortunately the internet seems to reward and encourage extreme positional statements. Further (this may apply to other groups as well), a large number of Americans feel threatened by there mere existence of opposing views. And admitting their validity just shakes said people to the core.

I *like* strong opinions. Often times those strong opinions are due to enormous research, thought and experience. If they can articulate *why* they have that opinion, that's valuable even if I don't personally find it compelling.

Most of the time i do not that a toxicity most of these thread you could learn alot when you read other poeple opnion sometimes you think at the top of the iceberg but some of developer came and destory your strong opnion with reasons like let me have hot take. if you doing DI you do not have a real life. then another developer came and tell how usefull DI and how i could improve my life with it.

I'm not interested in your strong opinion about strong opinions :) Conversation is the base of any civilization. If you think `const` is better than `let`, and you think you can articulate the reason behind it? Go for it! This is how our species improves - by talking and by discussing ideas. You can not discuss big ideas, if you can not even handle small ideas like const vs let. And this whole video contradicts itself, since it is trying convince other people that the idea of convincing people is bad. You are doing the very thing you are criticizing and you don't even see it. If that is not hypocritical I don't know what is.
@dinesee1984
@dinesee1984 28 дней назад
I went full circle in 3 years: 1. Learned fundamentals 2. Started to participate in discussions 3. Red basically all opinions about all major topics. 4. Realized that there is no “Real” enginnering, only developers trying to create working software for profit and in 9 out of 10 times no one really cares about what to use/what is best/how to properly do it. We just have to relax and learn as we work. Doesn’t matter who is right or wrong, we only need working product in the end of the day
@mikebell3579
@mikebell3579 28 дней назад
I've had very similar experience. All fields of engineering, that I've been close up to, have a "striking of balance" where its 60% science and 40% art. And if it works it works.

Maybe SM should use AI to highlight opinions vs facts so readers know from the start that’s not meant to be read as rules/facts. That way the clickbait becomes more evident as the title would be written as a fact but the AI already analyzed the thing and tells you it’s an opinion

I honestly can't see where is the issue or problem with having "strong opinions". Isn't it way better than having none? Besides, how can a simple free speech hurt your feelings? And why should people keep anything "to themselves"? Because you are ordering them to do it? And why should anybody pay attention to such command? I'm also curious: How will you enforce it? How will you effectively enforce the censuring of free speech? Are you counting with people simply doing what you need/want? because if that's the case I don t see that very realistic, and if is not the case then... I think you are forgetting the magic word. The fame is a tricky thing. Don't let ego take the best of you. Tt's not worth it. Peace.
