I watched midnight in paris like 6 times in one week and took 16 pages of notes with random thoughts on it. This is a video condensing these notes and perhaps mentioning some fun facts for you. Enjoy.

You’re not alone in your feeling; this is not a movie but a sweet dream for all of us who are in love with Paris and the wonderful 30s when anybody who was someday in culture found a niche over there. I’ve been to Paris a million times and still keep on finding new places and new things to love. Other places, by comparison, seem like bland pointless places.

Something I love about this film is a feature found in other Woody Allen films. It's not at first obvious but, although small, it is integral to the whimsical appeal of Midnight in Paris: nobody has a mobile phone. They can become lost, be alone with their thoughts, and focus on the people they meet. As a result, we are offered a means of escapism via a film in which the protagonist also escapes.

Admirable research ! Thank you for putting this video together ! However, it ended on a sad note for me : I can understand the disappointment when you first travel to Paris but, I can tell you, once you get past the fantasy and accept that this city is an actual city where people live, it becomes once again a wonderful universe in itself. The streets, the atmosphere, etc. But I understand that tourism isn't the best way to connect to a place, unfortunately and fortunately ! Places are much more intricate than we think and you don't get to understand and sometimes enjoy them on your first try. Maybe it's a little bit like a romantic love ? I feel like this is one of the interpretation that you can make of Midnight in Paris : if you don't give up your fantasy or the illusion you believe in, then you never get to actually enjoy what's actually wonderful and sensual and real in love or in urbanity. Anyway, sorry for my english, this is from a Frenchie who adores Paris.

I've probably watched this movie 80-100 times. What stands out after so many viewings is the meticulous direction- the quick-fire, almost talk-over-each-other dialogue; the diction, where you can clearly hear each word spoken, and the long single take in front of Versailles. None of this is by accident.

I disagree on your last statement though! I've been to Paris four times (and was supposed to go again last year but you know.....) and all visits were marvelous. It goes wrong when you start projecting your fantasies (and other people's fantasies) onto the city. When you accept the bad with the good, you will always have fond memories.
@StorytellingHeadshots
@StorytellingHeadshots 3 года назад
I agree. I went to Paris (without really being in love with a fantasy of it beforehand-I really knew nothing of the legends around it-) And it became a very special place for me. But I think the key was I went in with absolutely no expectations. I brought a friend with me once who had built up Paris greatly in her mond ahead of time-and irinically she had a horrible time and even went back early. We had very different experiences. I was willing to just enjoy where we were and take it for what it was while she kept chasing this ghost of her expectations everywhere. She was always running from one famous spot to another, while I was free to discover “my own Paris” and it was great. I do still carry it with me. And I made a great community of friendships in Paris as well, which I think is the reason that it was a meaningful time. I think if you're chasing a fantasy you will always be disappointed. Maybe if you are already in “love” with the idea of Paris, you’ll have to find your real “Paris” anywhere but there.

Hahaha... Your last line just broke me out of the mood I am in right now. I am on my way back home after a week long trip in Paris. An hour ago, when my wife asked what was the best thing about the trip, I actually couldn't think of anything in particular. I told her that the whole trip was rather mediocre. I've had better vacations. There's was nothing too bad but there wasn't anything too good either. It read just meh. Having said that, I opened Netflix to check if Midnight in Paris is on there. It isn't. So, I did the next best thing. Opened youtube and started watching videos from and on Midnight in Paris randomly. I loved your video and while your breakdown and analysis of the movie brought back warm feelings about Paris, your last line summed up exactly how I was feeling right now and even I couldn't have figured it out myself. Excellent video.

It's a shame not to see it for real, though. Of course reality never measures up to fantasy, but if you lived your life in fear of being disappointed, you'd never have a single real experience. Paris is a truly beautiful city (even now, or at least when I was last there two years ago), one of the top 3 cities in Europe imo (Florence is one of the others for me, and my first love will always be my native Barcelona). You can still really appreciate the rose-tinted view that Allen paints even if you have seen the reality (in some ways more so, since your imagination is fleshed out by experience- on my first trip to Paris as an adult I spent two days going to all the locations featured in the film, and it was great fun!). As Rick Blaine says to Ilsa at the end of Casablanca (read out loud in your best Bogart impression), "we'll always have Paris"...

Can’t agree with your closing comment. If you go to Paris and expect ONLY the romance, then yes you may be disappointed once you see the long lines, the pick pockets, the busy streets and honking cars. But it’s a major city. That’s what you get with major cities. Take Paris for what it is and you’ll find the romance. The gorgeous parks, the museums (not the louvre! Try the d’Orsay or L’orangerie.) the pastries, the food, the wine. So much to love about Paris!

My favourite movie forever!!! Loved the genius of Woody Allen to craft such a romantic era and present it so beautifully! Been to Paris and totally love it. I can go back to the city anytime just to wander around, smell the air, dine at a cafe and watch people aimlessly! I was surprised though when you said "The idea of Paris is much better than going to Paris". I would like to know why ? 😊

As someone who's been to Paris a few times, I wholeheartedly disagree. Paris is everything and more than what is portrayed in films and I don't even speak French.

I hunted down Gill Pender's wool sport jacket (it's a Ralph Lauren) and bought it. My favorite jacket of all time.

Only seen it once and want to again just need to find it on streaming somewhere I have access to. I remember it giving me a warm feeling and it making feel inspired and wanting to read, write and create. I have a friend who would love this movie but has taken a moral stance to watching any movie made by woody Allen, his loss. Separate the art from the artist and this is art

Thank you for your wonderful ccommentary! The only problem with this wonderful movie is that real Paris is NEVER that clean, quiet, or empty.
